Film: Moon

Saw a pretty good British independent film Moon.

I can't talk too much about it without giving out spoilers but basically it's about a guy living on the moon. There's a mining operation on the moon for Helium-3 which is needed for fusion energy on earth. Apparently the operation only needs one person to run it so the character, Sam Bell, is contracted to work there for 3 years and in the film his time to return to earth is near. His only source of companionship is a computer GERTY and occasional taped messages from his wife and child on earth. The mining operation is on the dark side of the moon and a relay satelite is down so no live communication with earth is possible. GERTY communicates by an unemotional human sounding voice and uses a computer screen emoticon in order to communicate any semblance of emotion.

The film has a great script. By about halfway through the film I was thoroughly confused but it all becomes clear in the end. And I really liked the ending. Sam Rockwell does a good performance and I liked the intonation Kevin Spacey gives as he voices the computer.

The film deals with loneliness, isolation, and the human condition so if you are depressed, don't see it. It is Art House stuff so naturally it was in limited release. Low budget film with British special effects that weren't too bad. Razz

Adored it: solid, intelligent science-fiction that put intriguing twists on established themes of the genre.

And how can you not mention that it was directed by David Bowie's son? Razz

Yes, that was an oversight of mine. Duncan Jones has a promising future as a director in his own right. The story is his but Nathan Parker wrote the screenplay.

Just when you think we've exhausted all plot possibilites someone comes along with a new plausible story. (Well, I hope it's new) And I liked that Moon is good fundamental Science Fiction.

I know. I mean, with a theme as commonly recurring in hard sci-fi in the genre as cloning (since that was already tocuhed upon in the trailer, I guess it's not too much of a spoiler) I was honestly suprised to find a take on the idea that I had not previously experienced. I also admired the deliberate invocation of classic science-fiction cinema in its atmosphere.
