With the permission of Aimee, I shall be directing a Forum Cast of Once Upon a Mattress.

For those of you who don't know what a Forum Cast is, it is basically a virtual cast of a production, with Musicals.Net users as the cast. Of course, it is never performed, recorded, or anything, but people do get to make banners for their signatures so that everyone knows who’s who. In this forum cast, people talk about themselves and nominate themselves for a character from the show (in this thread) and then everybody PM’s their votes to me. I tally up the votes and I announce the cast also on this thread. Then everybody goes and makes cool banners and has bragging rights!

The deadline for auditions is on December 21, 2007 (two weeks from now). Between December 22, and December 29, the votes will be sent in. The tallying begins on December 29, and the cast list should be up some time within the week. Any votes sent in after December 29, 2007 will not be counted.

Here are the rules for participating in this Forum Cast:
1. If you do not want to participate or think that Forum Casts are boring, etc., then please leave this thread. I always love doing these and I know other people do, too. It is a great way to get to know the people around you, and we always have lots of fun.

2. You cannot vote for yourself. If you vote for yourself, all of your votes will be disqualified.

3. Kind of in relation to #2, you cannot cast your votes until you have been registered for 45 days (unless you auditioned). I made this rule because in the past, people have started accounts to vote for themselves. I want this to be as fair as possible, so that's why the rule is enforced. NOTE: This rule is not applicable to those who auditioned. If you did not audition, then you cannot cast your votes until you have been registered for 45 days. I want this to be fair, and it ruins it if someone starts an account to vote for themselves.

4. If you are going to cast votes, please cast a vote for every character. You can’t very well have a show with only a few of the characters included. Keep in mind that you cast your votes via PM.

5. Please do not cast votes until December 22, 2007. Even if people haven’t auditioned for a few days, there still might be other people who would like to audition. Things need to be as fair as possible, so the only votes accepted will be the ones sent during the days I have asked.

6. If there is a tie for a role, I will simply draw names from a hat.

7. If less than 10 roles have been "auditioned" for by December 18, the casting will be cancelled.

8. If a person is cast in more than one role, one of the roles will be given to the runner-up (unless we don’t have enough people for each role).

9. Whoever has the 2nd most votes for each character will be cast as the understudy.

10. If someone is not cast in a major role, they will automatically be in the chorus so that everyone ends up with a part no matter what.

11. You can audition for as many roles as you want, but keep in mind that you will only end up with one, and maybe an understudy (providing that all the other roles you auditioned for are filled).

12. You cannot audition for a character that you do not share a gender with. Can you imagine a guy playing Lady Larken? This means that the Minstrel, Jester, and Wizard will NOT be played by women like they sometimes are in community theatre. The only exception goes to The Nightingale of Samarkand - I don't think the gender is ever specified, so I will accept votes for males and females.

13. Please, if you can take the time to audition, you can take the time to vote. I know that it takes a little bit of time to do that, but I have spent a TON of time putting this together, so I would appreciate some support. No votes = no cast. Plain and simple.

14. When you vote, please put some thought into what name goes with what character. If you just look at my character list below and put any name beside the characters, it could very well end up that someone who put a sentence or two for why they deserve the role wins the role over someone who wrote paragraphs.

15. It’s very cliché, but please – have fun! Don’t take things too seriously. The show will never be done in any form at any time, so don’t make a fuss if you’re not cast in the role(s) you wanted, or for any other reason.

Why I deserve this role:

Lady Larken-in about one week, I'll be auditioning for her, and I think she is a great role. The great thing about her is that she's a caricature of your typical fairytale damsel, but she's not acting like that for laughs, but because she belives like that. (for those who don't get what I'm saying, watch Amy Adams in Enchanted!) plus she gets to chose between the Minstrel and Harry!

Winnifred-who wouldn't want to be Fred? She's confident despite being Shy, she wants her Happily Ever After, and gets it, but she doesn't obey the traditional way of getting it. What girl wouldn't want to be strong enough to get thier own prince and happiness?

Nightingale-She's a pretty singing bird! How awesome is that?

Lady Rowena-Now she looks like a fun role to play. She, Merril and Lucille remind me of the Silly Girls, in a not as silly way. Having been a Silly Girl, I know how much fun it is to be a threesome.

Princess #12-I feel so bad for her. She probably would have been a great princess for Dauntless and have made the Queen happy if Aggravain hadn't been so determined to rig the test and keep her son all to herself.

Winnifred: I feel like I am very like the character - I'm not at all the typical Princess type, I can be very loud and awkward, but I still wish I could live the fairytale life.

Queen Aggravain: I can be very bossy and demanding, and again with the loud thing. I'm also a born leader, according to my mom and friends.

Lady Rowena: I've played her before, and she's a fun role. She's sort of the leader of the other ladies, and I have a lot of leadership qualities.

Why I Deserve These Roles:

Prince Dauntless: Prince Dauntless has always had a special place in my heart, because he was the first lead role I've ever had. He is such a fun character. We're the same on many levels. We both are very childish, but in good ways - there is a certain innocence about him that is just so appealing as a character. He has a great song that I sing all the time, and Dauntless is such a fun character!

The Jester: When I was little, I wanted to be a Court Jester when I grew up... that dream ended after I realized what the real world is like! I LOVE to clown around, and I don't love anything more than making people smile and laugh - hapiness is such an important part of life, even if it's just a chuckle from watching a goofball perform. Making people happy is what I'm all about. This particular Jester also happens to have the best song in the show! The Jester is a dream role of mine, and I would be honored to "play" him in this Forum Cast!

Dauntless - I feel similar to him in many ways. Throughout school, my girl friends were just never good enough for my mother and she would always try to find a way between us. I also feel that while at times, I'm not the brightest crayon in the box, I have a heart of gold and that's what matters.

Sextimus - OOOO LADIES!!! hahaha I love women and sometimes have difficulty "finding the words" to tell them how I really feel.

Harry - I feel that I am like Harry in the fact that I don't run away from my problems. I work as hard as I can to find a solution and fix the problem. His love for Larkin, in spite of everything they face, is so inspiring. Even after they have their argument, he continues to love her more and more, and I just hope that one day I can find a woman who makes me feel like that.

Jester - I love making people laugh. I thrive on laughter, to the point that in my past shows, if people didn't laugh at my jokes, I would get a bit flustered and would have to find a new way to engage this new audience. Running around doing dumb tricks would be an ideal career for me, considering that's what I do now anyway.

Minstral - I've been known to randomly break out into song and sing stories to people. Sounds like a minstral to me.

Studly - I'm a stud. Enough said.

DAUNTLESS: I've done the role more than once, and I've won awards for it both times. In all honesty, if you had to choose someone that you could most trust to be capable of performing the role, it would be me. I say that not to be a bitch but because it is statistically correct.

HARRY and MINSTREL: I have the goods for both of these roles. I am blessed with the legit tenor voice for either. I'm sexy, which you would ideally want to have in both roles (I'm also one of the few men who can actually pull off wearing the tights that the show seems to demand). I even have the medieval-looking goatee that looks so perfect on either character.

And besides, I made the vocal range thread, so I feel entitled. Like when someone buys all new seats for a theatre, and then you have to cast them for the rest of their lives. Just kidding. But not really.

Princess #12: I think this is one of the greatest cameo characters to play. She gets to speak, she gets a name, and when I did the show, the girl who played her is one of my favorite actresses I've worked with, and I'd love to play the part as well. Just a ditsy, fun, hopeful young girl!

Why I deserve this role: First off, Once Upon a Mattress is my favorite musical, and Fred is my favorite roll. I played her this past spring, which was ridiculously fun.

I think I'm a lot of what Fred is. She's this princess that doesn't act or look like a princess at all, yet people grow to really like her. I don't let my size or appearance stop me from doing anything, or prevent me from auditioning for roles whose body type I might not stereotypically fit. She doesn’t let her unladylikeness stop her from being a princess. She knows she is fabulous and she lets that spring forth from her! I like to think that I give off that sort of confidence. I’ve been told that I’m very over the top and sometimes I think I’m overly confident. The main difference between Fred and myself is that parents generally really like me.

When I auditioned for OUAM this past spring, I didn't think I was getting it at all. I was shooting for a Lady in Waiting just because I love being in shows. I was beyond shocked when the director called to ask me to play Fred. This was my first show since high school, where I had continuously gotten stuck with supporting roles that didn't sing much. Everyone knew that I was the girl who was a good actor, but only a mediocre singer. Fred represents having someone, a director none the less, believe that I could sing, believe that I had the talent to help move the show. It was also the first time my parents told me that they believed that I could do this for a living. I got a really awesome reaction from the audience, I still have people coming up to me and telling me they saw the show. It was a wonderful experience for me. Fred really represents that for me.

Because... technically, no one should know who is who in the show yet, since voting is open until Saturday the 29th. But it appears that the voting has stopped. I made the mistake in The Lion King of changing the dates according to the speed of the process. One person ended up auditionless (who was just planning on auditioning later), and I felt terrible. So I promised myself that, no matter what happened during this show, I would stick to my original set dates. It keeps everyone less confused, and it keeps me more organized.

Before everyone congratulates each other, begins making banners and all Hell breaks loose, I have a few things I would like to say as your director.

First off, I did something a little bit different this show – I actually cast people in roles that they never auditioned for. Those two people were Ashlynne (BroadwayObssessed) and wicked_boy. The reason Ashlynne has a choice between Lady Merril, Lady Mabelle, and the Ensemble is because she was actually tied with PappyCat for the lead role of Princess Winnifred. She wasn’t cast in any other role besides the Winnifred u/s, so I have decided to give her a choice of three smaller roles. She deserves a role just as much as PappyCat, and I think it’s only fair that she gets some recognition. The other person who has the option to take a different role is wicked_boy as Sir Studley, because he was not cast as an understudy or lead, but he still presented a good audition. Even though Brock07 auditioned for Studley, he was cast in many other understudy roles, so I have decided that it’s a small enough part among many others that he can give to wicked_boy. Congratulations to both of you, BroadwayObssessed and wicked_boy!

Secondly, I would like to congratulate PappyCat, Apples2for10, ConverseSneaker, dcrowley, wicked_diva, mastachen, Brock07, and Beagle On Stage for receiving lead/supporting roles. Many of you had great competition to overcome, so great job – all of you – for taking the time to make awesome auditions. You deserve these roles!

I would also like to give a shout out to BroadwayObssessed, ConverseSneaker, Lepitot, Lady’sMaid, Beagle On Stage, Brock07, and BroadwayBeast for being understudies!! More often than not, there were ties and I was forced to either flip a coin or draw from a hat to decide who would be cast as whom. All of you presented awesome auditions, so please don’t be insulted or disappointed for being understudies. In real shows, they are so vital to a run of a performance, and understudying can be lots of fun! Congratulations!

This show, I added an Ensemble since there was a fair number of people with cameo and/or understudy roles. Our Ensemble for Once Upon a Mattress consists of three great people – BroadwayBeast (our Jester understudy), Lady’sMaid (our Princess #12, and u/s for Larken), and Monkeychick (our Nightingale of Samarkand).
