The Heat Is On In Saigon: Who's line? Chris or John?I've been listening to 'The Heat Is On In Saigon' for quite some time, despite never having a chance to watch the musical. But the other day when I checked out the lyrics of this song, I was confused with one of the lines:
CHRIS
the meat is cheap in Saigon
why can't I just play the game, we lost the war long ago
what is this bug up my ass? You tell me, I don't know
I always thought that line was sung by either John, or some random marine, as it doesn't sound like Chris in OST. But most of the lyric websites wrote that it was Chris's line. So, I'm a little confuse, it isn't important but it sort of bug me.
Anyone who watch the musical, or heard the song has any idea, who actually sung that particular line?

Those are different lyrics than we had the following, all sung by Chris, "The meat is cheap in Saigon, I used to love getting stoned, waking up with some whore, it's not fun anymore."

Really!! I didn't know there were a few versions. I suppose mine was the London Cast, and the voice is certainly Lea Salonga's. Which version was yours?

Errr... the libretto provided by MTI. I have the full London recording, I'll have to listen to it again and see how it's different! I'll put it on in my car on the way to work tomorrow and post based on what I hear. But I can tell you that is what is in the libretto for sure. (I hauled my butt off the couch and actually checked!)

Many, many of the lyrics were rewritten after the OLC was recorded. The CSR is a much more accurate representation of what MTI licenses out.

Turns out that my version is the 1995 "Complete Recording" with Joanna Ampil as Kim. In it the lyric is as I wrote it is as above, with Chris singing "The meat is cheap in Saigon, I used to love getting stoned, waking up with some whore, I don't know why I went dead, it's not fun anymore."

Maybe you have the same OLC recording I do: released in Canada, 1990. I've always thought the same thing, that the "you tell me, I don't know" part doesn't really sound like Chris, even though the liner notes say that whole part is him.
I just listened to it and actually the "I don't know" part does sound like him, but not the "You tell me" part. I found a clip on youtube that seems to support this (search "LMS's saigon heat" and you'll find it). So I guess for the recording (and the performances?) back then, someone else said the "you tell me" part, then Chris answered it?
