Wicked: The MovieI don't know if there is one planned but it just seems natural that someone must be thinking of doing "Wicked: The Movie" in light of the stage show's huge success. Such a surreal tale looks like something just made for Tim Burton, but if he did, I hope he does a better job than he did with "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" (although it did good box office numbers but personally I didn't like it). Or is the public no longer receptive to the movie musical? Both RENT and "The Producers", while stage show hits, flopped as movies.
And of course in addition to a risk of box office failure, a Wicked movie is liable to cause a rash of musical theater fans to slit their wrists.

SPOILER ALERT!
I think that Wicked would make a great musical movie, if done right. The problem with movie musicals is that they either try to adapt the stage production without changing it, or they try to adapt it to much for the non musical-loving audiance. They never go All-out, expanding the material, being creative. if Wicked were to become a movie, I hope they would re-write the script for the screenplay. take out all the cheesy jokes and bring back an element of the novel. I love the music of wicked, but the script SUCKS. Oh, and change the ending. If ONE thing get's boradway a bad name, it's the hopeless optimism. Let Elphaba die, and Leave Glinda pondering her strength, and her next move in life. Leave the audiance thinking. Make the audiance cry for elphaba. Wicked has great potential for a movie, but it'd have to be done right. I can't imagine it not being a box office sucsess though, too many fans love it.

Burton would be good if the film was based off of the book, not the musical. It is inevitable that this will be turned into a movie, though--most likely OBC. Of course, I think Carol Kane (the current Morrible and past tour Morrible) should play Madam Morrible if they were to make a movie version.

I agree about Tim Burton directing...that would definitely be a movie I would go see (then again I love Wicked already).
But I think that Tim Burton has a pretty large fan base of his own, so that would bring in a lot of people just because it's a Tim Burton movie (I guess I fall into that category too....)

They always tape the broadway shows...I'm not sure the frequency of it but I know that pretty much every cast thats performed a show on broadway in the last many years has a video of it that are in a library. One can go see them if one has a valid reason to see it (journalist or whatever usually), but you can only see it once through and can't pause or rewind or anything I dont think.

Yeah, I don't think Tim would be interested if it was very like the musical. If he did do it if it were more like the musical, I think he'd end up making fun of it. He sort of ends up doing that with "bright" material. I don't think many wicked fans would be very happy with him then.

I agree, I can see Burton as a director of Wicked as he is very good at adapting things... IE Edward Scissorhands. Hmmmm wonder who would play the lead roles... I could see Jessica Simpson (Even though I detest her! ) as Glinda...

Jessica Simpson...umm...no. As it stands, I think Wicked the musical would make a horrible movie. Like so many other musicals made movies, I think it's just too much for a movie. A good section of the show's popularity comes from the spectacle, as we've discussed before. That kind of spectacle on a movie screen wouldn't hold the same punch in this time when we've rather realistically seen the Titanic sink, King Kong climb the Empire State Building and countless other special effect extravaganzas. After that, well, the story of the musical just won't hold the weight of a box office contender. If they do make a movie, it should be novel-based. There is just so much more you could do with it in a cinematic medium.
|
Monsieur D'Arque
|
My suggestion: Do the movie, but give the script a rewrite, as suggested. Find a way to top the spectacle of the Broadway show... no more "GIANT SKIRT TIME!" Then, throw in a few celebrities in less-pivotal roles for the movie audience, and some Broadway greats for the theatre folk. Suggestions:
The Wizard: Nathan Lane
Nessa: Diana DeGarmo (I loved her in HAIRSPRAY, didn't see her at all on IDOL)
Boq: Neil Patrick Harris
Morrible: Angela Lansbury
Dillamond: Tim Curry
|

I think Wicked would make a great movie, but it would make a horrible movie musical. Given the success of the Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter moves I think they should base the movie off the book and go in that type of direction.

Just my thoughtsI think it would actually be really hard to do becuase everyone will expect it to be Wizard of Oz part 0 & 2 since it happens before and after dorothy. So the sets would have to look pretty fake like the WoOz to incorporate that movies set designs. The flying sequence would probably suck a*s because she would go up on wires in front of a green screen and it would lose the "Magic" of her flying. What would she do, fly through the air over them all? We've seen that already. I would love to see a movie of it done though. The ending could go either way I think they should shoot both then test audiences like they did for Rent and whichever they get the best reactions from use that and include the other on the DVD. Most audiences like the happy endings, but you never know. If they don't use the OBC some thoughts about the cast I have would be: Katies Holmes as Elphaba, she almost got to play Christine in Phantom or maybe Catherine Zeta-Jones I dunno, Reese Witherspoon for Galinda, Hugh Jackman for Fiyero possibly although he might be too old, Richard Gere as the Wizard, Anthony Rapp from Rent as Boq maybe because of his kinda nasally voice, I dunno, Glenn Close as Morrible, and Emmy Rossum or Rosario Dawson as Nessa. That would definitely be an all-star cast. This is just my thoughts though. Please don't post hate replies to my ideas. I would like to know your thoughts though.

Oh Honey
Christine in Phantom and Elphaba in Wicked are two very different parts. You need to belt the second F above middle C alone for Defying Gravity. Christine is more lyric soprano. For that alone I don't think Katie can do it.
I won't hate on all of your choices, but the only one I could consider was Glenn Close. Even then there's got to be someone better.
In my opinion, if there is a Wicked movie musical, which I agree with others would be hard to pull off, I want to have the feeling the people have training and will be able to perform it. This isn't a musical you can grab a random starlet and have her croak it out. The ranges of some of these characters are intense, and I don't want to hear someone shouting the whole time. I
'd also like to see the people who play the parts be closer to the actual age of their characters. For instance, early to mid 20's, or be able to pass for being that age, for Elphaba, Galinda, and the school kids.

Now THAT is a movie I'd go see. The only other pick I have is Anne Hathaway for Nessa. She has a very sweet voice that I think would work well in the role plus she has the acting chops. I don't think Richard Gere would be completely out of the question as The Wizard. I can't think of any starlets I could see as the leading ladies unless someone is hiding a major voice out there. Catherine Zeta-Jones would have been a good choice years back but Elphaba, G(a)linda, Fiyero, Boq and Nessa all have to look like they're around college-aged. It's easier to get away with that suspension of disbelief in the theater but not on a movie screen with close-ups. Depending on how she does in Dreamgirls, perhaps Beyonce for Elphaba? Vocally I am pretty sure she could handle it but I'm not sure about her acting skills.

No, not Beyonce. Not Beyonce. I think Joel Grey (the original braodway wizard) would be fine as the wizard. Whoever plays the wizard, though, is supposed to be a really, really, old and legendary star. I could probably see someone such as Mickey Rooney in the role.

The only person i NEED to see back is Kristen, she is absoloutley amazing. Idina screams too much, but she has the strength for the role. I would like to see her back. Joel Grey = wizard. Although he's not a big enough role for me to complain about someone else being cast.

Whoever said Anne Hathaway as Nessarose would be pretty spot on. That's how I always imagined her and her vocie is pretty damn good.
I think Idina and Kristen would be good choices for the movie since that would definitely get the broadway-audiences in there, and then stick in some celebrities for the other roles to get the non-broadway audience.
I can already predict this film bombing, much like Phantom and the Producers so it's not even as though, were it made, it would be on our radar for too long. Shmeh!

Chenoweth amazes me that she can sing so well at the drop of a hat. During talk show interviews, if the moment arises, she can break out in song so easily.

Witherspoon definitely can do the Galinda attitude. For film, don't they perform the songs in studio and lip synch during filming? I like a good singer even for a film but film musicals seem to work even with a less than Broadway caliber singer.

I assume you mean Witherspoon. Witherspoon's voice might not be strong enough for the stage but I think it would work for film. Like Madonna, Witherspoon could get a voice coach for her singing role in the film but I guess another question is does Witherspoon have the range. A voice coach can help but only just so much.

I thought she did fantastic in Walk The Line. You also have to consider the role she was playing and the type of music. Plus the fact that she was singing with an accent. I don't know if she has the range, but I would love to see her play G(a)linda- especially if they decide to make a non-musical film of the novel.

WHOA..do you think you only have to sing to be in a musical??? Cheno has a strong voice..technically. but the girl IS NOT AN ACTRESS! Sher cna only play one kind of role and she plays everything very cutsie and annoying. I cannot stand watching her.
as for singing there are alot better singers out there too. Melissa Errico,Barbara Cook,Marin mazzie,Christine Andreas,June Anderson,Rebecca luker,ALice Ripley,Betsy Joslyn,Sarah Rice,Merle louise,Patti Cohenauer,Judy Kuhn,Jennifer laura Thompson,Joan Roberts,Carolee Carmello,Rachel York,Amy Spanger, all better singers than Cheno and all much much better actresses.
Ive been seeing shows i nNew York my whole life. Ive seen alot better than the squeaky toy.
as for Reese..she is a wonderful actres..10 times the depth and honesty in her performances than Cheno could ever acheive. she acted and sang the hell out of her role as June Carter Cash. watch that film and just look at the emotion she conjures up when singing..thats acting at its most honest and true.
also if you were reading me correctly..I said I would love to see a film of the novel because the musical was dreadful. it totally ruined the novel's intent. castrated it.

G(a)linda is NOT supposed to be just cutsie and annoying. Her character is actually supposed to be one of the more complex. Yes, Galinda is supposed to be cute and slightly manic. She thinks the world of herself. But she also wants power and recognition. By Act II, she is struggling with her own inner feelings of having finally gotten everything she ever dreamed off but at such a high cost that she isn't sure that it is worth it anymore. She shows her other side when Elphaba and Fiyero run away together and the betrayal hurts her so deeply that she sells Elphaba out to the Wizard- an action which directly results in the death of Nessarose and which hurts Fiyero in the process. By the end of the show, she has made this complete transformation becoming a much stronger person who really wants to do good and make things right. She has lost everyone that she's ever truly cared about all because of her selfish decisions and rash mistakes. I think Reese is one of the best actresses we currently have in Hollywood. She can do deeper roles, like June Carter, or light fun like Elle Wood. There is no doubt in my mind she would blow most other actresses away as Glinda. Why do you find her so mediocre?
That being said, I am a fan of Kristin Chenoweth. I think her voice is gorgeous and she always makes me laugh. But even I have to admit she plays mostly the same roles. I am so looking forward to seeing Running With Scissors just to see if she can do something more dramatic and different.

I'd say if it were an adaptation of the musical, either broadway performers, ex-cast members or unknowns would mostly have to be cast. The songs from Wicked aren't all that easy to perform and there are very few A Listers who would be able to perform everything required, especially for Elphaba and Glinda.
Ewan McGregor could undoubtedly pull off Fiyero, I think, but don't listen to me, I'm a fan of his- I'm biased.
Also, whoever said Anne Hathaway, I think really hit the nail on the head, she'd probably be great!

Uh, excuse me what happened to free speech? Everybody is welcome to post on MDN and whether they like a show or not is up to them. That is an unbelievably stupid comment / assumption to make. Jeez. Glad I got that off my chest.

Secondly this post is about the 'Wicked Movie' if it were ever to come out, not trying to poke jibes at other people (sorry to draw attention) Another point is that looking back on some of your posts, perhaps doing the proper English Language not text talk, will earn some respect on these boards as more people are likely to reply. Your attitude is very immature, for example...

That kind of attitude will not get you anywhere in life. Especially if you are in the theatre biz - sorry to be making assumptions here.
Everybody is allowed to disagree about something but being childish is not the way to debate about an issue.
I wish you luck for the future.

You know don't insult people Kristin is wonderful, she is not my favorite galinda but i don't go and trash her, it's rude. I don't prefer sycon and shoshona as elphaba but there still wonderful talented actress.

This is what makes us Cheno fans look bad. Well not so much the first part, but the [b]. Cheno is frickin' fantabulous her acting is awesome and her voice is absolutely wonderful. Though I can see why some people find her annoying. And yes at certain times I am also annoyed by her. If someone puts on Cheno when I first wake up they will die lol.

I agree. I love Kristin, I think she has an amazing voice and so much talent. But it, as with anything, is a matter of opinion. Music, theatre, anything like that is subjective. That's what makes it so wonderful - it's different! Imagine if everyone liked the exact same styles or music, or shows, or singers? How boring life would be!
So, of course, not everyone is going to be a Kristin fan. Why should you care? If you like her, that's great! You have every right to. But just because we like her doesn't mean everybody has to.

Exactly my point. Rumplepurr, sorry by the way I will not mention a name again. I think, I was very respectful towards the member I 'didn't agree with,' and very calm. However if she feels that I am being nasty to her in any way I am not, I am merely trying to make a point with some of the views I posted.

I know text talk too - 16 next Friday yes! I just made a point, that people on these forums will most probably respect you more and post replies if you use proper grammer. I find it personally annoying, reading text talk especially in large capital letters - maybe you got a little carried away with the moment but oh well it's over now. Done and dusted. I hope this little 'disagreement' won't cause any concern any more. Best of luck.

NEWS I was watching Fox25 News a couple weeks ago and the lady was interviewing Katharine McPhee. She said that Stephen Spielberg had approached her about doing a film version of Wicked. Obviously McPhee would star as Elphaba. She said nothing was confirmed yet, but we know that Spielberg is thinking about it.

I might be slightly out of the loop here, but are we talking about a Spielberg film of the novel or musical?
|

I am not sure, but personally I would like to see a combination of the two. (maybe with some more aspects from the book because it had a deeper and darker story which usually plays out well in the movies.)

I just don't want Wicked turn into a movie. but if they going do the movie here my pick for the cast
Kate Winslet as Glinda
Keri Russell or Catherine Zeta-Jones as Elphapa
Fiyero: Patrick Wilson
Nessarose: Emmy Rossum
Boq: Randy Harriason
The Wizard: Micheal Crawford
Morrible:Glenn Close

You know what? I don't think this list is that bad! Catherine Zeta-Jones, though I've only seen her in Chicago, would be an interesting Elphaba. She seems to have an edge to her that could really define Elphaba as a "terror", but I also think she can bring the love into the character as well. Good idea! I also think that Emmy Rossum as Nessarose and Michael Crawford as the Wizard would both be good choices. And Glenn Close as Morrible? Perfect! Good list!
As far as Partrick Wilson goes...I think they could do way better! I don't know much about Randy Harriason or Kate Winslet, so, no comment.

CAUTION:SPOILERS
i saw the musical right after reading the book and was disappointed not by the music, but by the optimistic attitude toward the characters. The novel greatly delved into this tragic story of a young girl that is destined to fail despite her ambitious dreams and skills. It was not like the musical at all. And don't even get me started about the ending. Bringing one of the most iconic antagonists of both screen and literature is like insulting the classic works of art.
As a student filmmaker, I have always thought hard about Wicked as a film. If I directed, I would have a script that took the more boiled down story from the musical and add the subplots of Elphaba being a revolutionary in the Emerald City and her travelss to the West. Also, I would not include most of the songs from the musical. Instead, I would have the score largely be the instrumental versions of songs that wuldn't translate into a film ("Popular", "Dancing Through Life", "Dear Old Shiz") and have only a few songs sung by the actors ( "Defying Gravity", "No One Mourns The Wicked", "For Good", "The Wizard and I").
Popular is way too bubbly for Wicked and while some people could say it heightens Glinda's character, I would have to disagree. It depletes Glinda into a ditzy blonde aand doesn't reflect her mutli-faceted character from the novel.
I have always had a strong vision of Defying Gravity on the top of an Emerald Tower from the Emerald City. There would be no magical spells but instead, Elphaba would just take the broom and drop off the tower, as if plummeting to her death after she saw the corruptness of her government. She would rise on her broom and then sweep away towards the streets as the people of the city looked at horror. At the conclusion of the song she would fly vertically into the sky and truly defy gravity.
Katherine McPhee would be an amazing choice for Dorothy. I would want Dorothy to have a more prominent role other than being in the shadows because that's just not real. There is such a great interaction in the novel between the Witch and Dorothy. This would also allow the death of Elphaba to be much more powerful. (yes, she has to die in the film. and fiyero is NOT the scarecrow)
What I would love to do is film this, then go right on to a remake of the Wizard of Oz with Ms. McPhee as the leading lady. To film The Wizard of Oz someplace other than a soundstage and really construct a Yellow Brick Road would be amazing.
Ahh well. I'm just dreaming about the possibilities of Wicked....it would be so much more than the musical.

Too bad she is very much too old to be playing a college girl.
Also, why do people keep casting gorgeous people as Elphaba? She is supposed to be unattractive - Catherine Zeta Jones playing her and harping on about being ugly and a misfit would be laughable.

Well I am a big fan of the musical I think it gives a wonderful fullfilment to the story, but i do agree in the musical and did miss the relationship between Elphaba and dorothy. But from what I have herd I think at some point they are going to release a dvd of the Wicked the Musical with Steph and Kendra (Like from the trailer).

Agreed. Idina has to play Elphaba - she just is Elphaba. I mean she originated the role and is, usually, the person you envisage when you think of the role.
As for CZJ. No, just no.

They already filmed the tour cast for the trailer i believe they taped the whole thing at that time. Idina Menzel is good but at least stephanie being realeased ins't as bad as Kendra being in it! I just don't like her!

Whoever said (sorry, can't remember) that Elphaba is supposed to be beautiful, that's not entirely true. I think that the inside of her is often more beautiful than the outside.
But I do agree in some form that she has to be beautiful, but not like dead sexy. Just attractive.
