I don't think so...I saw one production (Stratford Festival of Ontario) and it was wonderful...but I guess I didn't see any of Laurie's sexual turmoil or anything, like there's supposed to be...she was basically just a flirty little thing who stuck with a deeply disturbed man....Is there anyone else who was supposed to be a deeper character that I may have missed? And,
on another note, I never saw highschool musical, but I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole anyway (except for Zaack Effron whom I found a pleasant surprise in Hairspray)

I absolutely HATED Chicago. I only made it through the first act and couldn't bear the thought of sitting through anymore so I didn't bother returning after the interval. I like listening to the songs on CD at home but I found the stage production so bland. It's the only show I've ever walked out on and I was so disappointed at the time.

"Chess"--except for 2 songs.
"Cats"
"Starlight Express"
"A Chorus Line"
"Sound of Music"
"Oliver"
"Legally Blonde"--I tried to watch it I shut it off, REALLY QUICK.
"The Wedding Singer"--I didnt like this one too much, I think it's cute but nothing much else.

(Sorry for all the lovers....)
but I...... REALLY dislike Wicked.
Ok....maybe Idina's sucky technique ruined it for me, but I think it's terrible. I've seen the show, and I respect the people behind it, but I don't like the way that the show itself is based off a book that is CLEARLY not family friendly, and it was written in a family friendly way. I don't think it's true to the book at all. And I would rather have a musical, that CLAIMS it's based on a novel, to actually have elements that the novel has and not just the main characters & storyline.
It disappointed me.

its def. not true to the book.

Joseph
Jesus Christ Superstar
Can't really get into either of those.
I can't watch Annie or just listen to any of the music. I adored being in it, because I enjoyed bringing Annie to life. But don't ever ask me to sing that god-forsaken song...yes, that one...TOMORROW. *dies*

My (and jessiemil42's) choir director has an allergy to Annie, pretty much. I don't know if I've ever met anyone who detests it so much. Like, when she told me how much she hates it, of course I found it funny to try and sing "Tomorrow" around her, but she actually gets upset.
I'm curious as to why you don't like JCS, Asha. Just wondering, if you don't mind sharing!

You all know what songs I'm talking about. Those are the songs EVERYONE knows. The rest of the music makes me want to cry. I understand its filler music and dialogue music mostly, but.... OW! IT BURNS! |
Going my movie version or stage musical? In my highly subjective opinion they are two very different animals. I found the movie to be just bland and mediocre, both acting, singing and design wise. It wasn't even horrendously bad, just..... totally mediocre. It was sad to see.
Whereas I think the stage musical has some of the best set designs out there, bold and individual in style, making transitions from scene to scene seamless. It has minimalistic sets (it's true!) with the stage being basically a black box, half a set and a drape (Masquerade = half a staircase and a drape. "Notes" = drapes, a table and a chair. "Angel of Music" = half a dressing room and a drape). This allowes one's imagination to fill in the rest, and it also allows the quick scene changes. And the costumes.... aaaw!
The depth of the show often depends on who's in the leads, I can agree with that.... luckilly I've never seen a bad Phantom live, and only one truly horrendous Christine (Katie Knight-Adams.... UUUGH!). But this is also where I found that the movie failed - I felt nothing for the leads, making me want to name the movie "The Opera" rather than "Phantom of the Opera"...
As for shows I dislike..... This has nothing to do with the quality of the shows, rather how much I'm exposed to them. One of these three are always performed in Norway, every year. I'm always curious about which musicals will be produced, and I'm always disappointed to see production of:
West Side Story
Sound of Music
My Fair Lady
popping up..... And like clockwork, next year's musicals has been revealed. Behold! A new, grand production of Sound of Music is announced! Bleeeeh.....

In my opinion, the quality of a show has more to do with the material that actually is written, rather than whom it happens to be that is performing that material. What do you think?

I think bad performers can bring down a show, or make a well-written character suck ass, but I agree with the general statement that it's not the actors who make the show, it's how the show is written that determines how good it is.

I'd like to agree with you, and it's partially true. But Mozart's music can suck big time in the hands of the wrong people. This is not due to the quality of the music. Shakespeare can be godawful in the hands of some, and just amazing when performed by others. This is not due to the quality of Shakespeare's work. And I feel the same way about musical theatre. Good will (almost) always become better in the hands of talented people.
Of course I agree with you about there needing to be a certain level to the material! Sometimes mediocre material is saved by one great performer (a movie example: Cate Blanchett in "Elizabeth: the golden age". Crappy movie, apart from a great performance of said Blanchett), sometimes it just stays mediocre.
But a good show/movie/play/whatever can become superb rather than "just good" if the performers are super. I mean - the difference between an OK Hamlet actor and an amazing one..... BIG difference, though the quality of the play remainds the same.

That's why I think it's useful distinguishing between the written material and the performance of the written material. I just happen to be preoccupied primarily with the written material...

I have an undying hatred for CATS. I don't even know where to begin with what's wrong with that show. (This comes purely from the writing, the performers were excellent).

I don't like Miss Saigon. I'm a huge fan of Les Mis, and I got the London Cast Recording of Miss Saigon, and was thoroughly disappointed.
I mean, all the characters are tenors. All the characters. Why are they all tenors? I mean, the Engineer will sing a verse, and then he'll sing the next verse an octave higher, for no bloody reason...
