One thing I've noticed about this forum is that people have been quite mean to others. Just because someone doesn't know as much about musicals as you do, or occasionally gets facts, spellings, ect. wrong, doesn't mean you have to correct them using sarcasm and rudeness. While usually I like using this forum, seeing negative comments like that about my posts and the posts of others makes me sad for humanity. It is ruining my experience on these boards and probably has driven others away.
Aimee

Eponine93, we are all too well aware that some people hee=re are not a friendly as they should/could be. We do our best to make sure people are not outright insulting to people. If you have any problems please report the post by hitting the blue button or PM a mod.

By far the vast majority of people here are bnice and polite. Please don't be scared off by the few who let the site down. Smile

I totally totally agree- you seriously took the EXACT words right out of my mouth. It may have been worse before, but I still don't think that's a good excuse. It makes me quite sad that people think it's acceptable to treat others this way, and definitely makes me think twice about coming on here some days- particularily lately.
Gwen

OKAY! (sorry for the shouting.)
I have a suggestion for the "Auditions Auditions Auditions" thread.
Could we please have more specific organization besides the sticky for asking about songs? Like different categories for different shows with what songs would be good to sing for a certain part? For example:

ie: Beauty and the Beast
Character: Belle. Suggested Songs:.........
Character: Gaston Suggested Songs:.......

Then people could just look it up more easily without a million people asking, "I'm trying out for such and such, what do I sing?"

And also, I think some of the threads in that post should be deleted (not locked) because it's really getting cluttered. When people make threads that say "Please use this thread," it really clutters the board even if they mean well. Of course, it should be explained in a calm and reasonable manner as to why the threads are deleted if they are. (An announcement or the like.)

Another thing is threads that don't really have any more use, like in the Announcements Thread. If all these announced shows have already gone by without being answered, I think getting rid of them would make more room. (For the forum in general.)

I hope you find these reasonable. (Not just the mods, but other people too.)
I have to go audition for 12th Night. Later!

That is strange, because my experience is the direct opposite. A lot of topics here just piddle out because people post silly things that demonstrates little critical competance.

Asking people to back up their opinion raise criticism or ignorance.

I am not one of those who claim I know everything about musical theatre, therefore I try to be careful about stating things bluntly, and I appreaciate learning things from people more educated than me.

I'll be the first to admit I sometimes fail to be careful when posting. But at least I do my best to avoid writing pointless post, and think it's good for the board when pointless, silly posting is pointed out.

Not only is sillyness annoying to read, it also puts the genre of musicals (which I assume we all love) in a stupid light when the affectionados appear silly. It damages the reputation of the genre, which is not that good to begin with.

Silencing healthy discussion is not my idea of pointing out sillyness.

Frequently, harmless conversations are locked. Yet threads that personally attack a certain member are never locked.

Aimee

Thank you for the observation. I'm not sure I agree with you but if thats what you think.
Luc

I'm actually going to have to agree with rock_musicals. A fangirlie will ask a question and the thread will be locked. Yet if somebody calls someone an @$$hole, they will be told to keep their comments to themselves, their post will be edited, and life will carry on.
Aimee

We'll have to agree to disagree.

I personally do not see a plethora of threads which are perfectly normal conversations [you call them 'fangirlie'] locked.

You must see different threads to me.
Quique

Oh man, you people crack me up! Laughing

I can't, for the life of me, think of even one single thread or post that fits the description of overly rude, "mean," or insulting. This is probably one of the most tame forums I've EVER visited. I'm not putting anyone down, I'm just honestly perplexed - someone please point out to me the rudeness found in here.

Most, if not all, members here are very nice and pleasant (though some of you could lighten up a little and get a sense of humor every now and then). Really, I see this forum as mostly safe and relaxed for all. The mods have done a great job in keeping it clean.

Ha! I'm auditioning for Twelfth Night tomorrow evening! Though I just finished The Importance of Being Ernest last Friday night playing Jack, I'm very tired. But I can balance drama with my school work, so I'm looking foward to a Shakespeare, though rehearsals will start less than a week after finishing the lead in Importance!

I'm not sure if this has been discussed, but when you click on profile and stuff and it shows your email, can eveyone see that or just you? Cause I don't want mine all over...and I got an email today that made me think maybe it was public. Question

never mind. I fixed it.
What Is This Feeling?

I'm gonna definately say, that I request an Annie Get Your Gun thread in the Shows, I mean really, it definately deserves a spot there! I really wish we could get one! I think I might start a petition thread and have people respond to it, and try to get this considered. I don't know if you add certain shows to the list , as time goes on, but I really think it desrves its on board! Laughing

I've noticed a plethora of really large signature images in the past few weeks or so -- anything to be done about it?

Hey, what's wrong with plethora? It's a sophomore vocab word at my school, and EVERYONE says plethora. In fact, a veritable plethora of students use the word.
Aimee

I love the word plethora, not least because it reminds me of a film I love, 'The Three Amigos'.

Actually, yes, me too.

Hehe two years ago me and my friend stayed up all night learning the dance to "My Little Buttercup"!!

I like 'Blue Shadows on the Trail' which they sing Ned too. Smile

Luc

I know this has been mentioned before, but I would like this to be strongly considered.

I think that we need a "Games Room." The MdN Social Club in particular is full of endless Elimination Games, 101 lists, and the like. I think it would even be nice to have other Elimination Games (Best Character from _______) in a seperate forum, because they really are clogging up the forum.

Just a thought....

now do it. Wink
katethegreat

I like that idea!
olly

I like musikal_geek's proposal a lot.
Quique

I also proposed this a while back.

I wish we can just eliminate the elimination games but creating a games forum is a good alternative.
Jordan

Who the hell wants to moderate a games room? Seriously.
Luc

All you have to do is look through once in a while. Otherwise, we tend to be pretty consistent with blue-carding. Confused
Robinflamingo

I'd moderate a games room.

I think it'd be good for the whole MdN at large to have a separate area for games and such.
Aimee

Do you mean a games forum when you say games room or do you mean live/real time games.
Robinflamingo

I mean a forum, myself, with all the gamey Wink threads moved there.
Luc

Aimee wrote:

Just a place where we can put all of the Elimination Games and "Top 101 _______" and all of that repetitive stuff so we can clean this place up.
Aimee

I understand. I'll tell you why I personally don't think its a good idea, most people would not bother to look there and threads would die very rapidly. When they are here, even people who don't normally post on 'game' type threads have a little go at many games. This is the social forum, games are fine.

That's my thoughts.

I belong to over a dozen forums of different ilks, and many do have a separate games folder - I think it's just a matter of training. I forget to cruise down to look in the Godspell folder for days on end sometimes myself.

Just for the record, we have a lot of new members here and people should take a moment to read this thread which contains the rules and guidelines etc: http://musicals.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=46628

I don't want to sound mean but these rules are as they stand, I'm not posting them because they are up for debate in any way, just making sure that new members know where they are because when I mentioned 'strikes' in another thread, there were a couple of questions as to what I meant.

Cheers guys Cool
Gwen

I've suggested something like this before and feel it would really help but I can't do it alone...
At the Top of each thread for a musical, there could be a STICKY where it is listed what characters in that musical sing/dance/whatever. It could ALSO list their vocal range, and also a bit about their personality.
After that you have the Auditions Thread where you have songs listed for different ranges and styles put together.
Also in the audition thread it might be good to make more general threads like: what to wear, how to act, what an audition process goes like for all levels (from highschool to professional. ) Also threads with advice on what to do for a sore or sick throat would help.
I know a lot of people just ask these questions in new threads and that's why I'm suggesting it. If we had more general threads like this it would keep the board form clutter and get more info to people faster. They could just look it up! Also, there are a few sites out there with things to kind of "look up" what parts people could play if their curious. I think we should get those out there.
Anyone interested in this? I really think it could help.
jazzygirlsings

On behalf of the people who like to "hang out" in the Auditions forum, I would like to request that this post get "Stickied"...there's a wealth of helpful information in it and it also references all other helpful threads.

http://www.musicals.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=49866

Thank you! Smile

Also, I really feel like that forum in particular is becoming a rather helpful resource for many actors, etc...It's become a bit of its own community! Smile

Gwen wrote:

But they wouldn't. I'm not gonna lie.
Gwen

True. Not all people do their own research, but it might make it easier. Instead of having to go along the lines of "oh, what do I do, I'll make a new post and ask for help" it could go along the lines of "oh, something's already there, I'll try that."

I think we should at least make a stricter policy on doing one's own research rather than simply stating that it's a good idea. As in, enforcing the idea of doing research for yourself. We could get a few sites for looking stuff up at the very least...

and I never said that everyone would follow the idea of doing it yourself. I've been in the audtion thread quite a few times and am frankly just bothered by how many multiple threads there are on the same musicals and the same characters and what should I sing over and over and over....it's become quite tiring to look at. (Maybe you'll say that I shouldn't hang out there then but I try to send suggestions by pm, not always by direct replies.)
Dvarg

Someone deleted most of my posts from the Shows that never should have been on Broadway thread. Why?

I find it highly offensive that noone even warned me first.

I assume it must have been a moderator, and if it is, I think this is abuse of power.

If this has to do with me exchanging posts with Font, I want to know why my posts were deleted, and particularly why those parts of the posts that had nothing to do with him were deleted.
Robinflamingo

In message board parlance, posts that deal with deleted posts are called "orphans" and often deleted as well, so there is no confusion for those people reading them later.

As for leaving parts of posts, that's just terribly difficult and time consuming. If you are wanting to say some of those things again, then just say them again...without the reference to banned poster or posts.
Dvarg

Robinflamingo wrote:

That doesn't change my opinion it displays an unusual lack of respect deleting those posts without even warning me.

Yes, I think (at least parts of) those posts were worth saving. It's not as if I remember everything I write here, so I can't recreate them.
Jordan

It was me. Lots of people lost bits and pieces because they were replies to Font and quoting his posts etc etc etc.

As Robin said, the orphan posts were deleted as well. Despite being off work, I honestly can find better ways to spend my time than to intricately tip-toe around deleting just the right fragment of a post for the thread to make sense etc etc. I am sorry however that some well constructed posts were lost but...

As for rude, frankly blame Font. I was always taught it was rude to outstay your welcome yet despite his being clearly told he is not welcome here (as decided by the owner and host of this board) he returns again and again. He has involved himself hugely in the thread(s) thereby making things difficult for everyone when he is booted again.

If this board were an English pub, Font would most likely be in the ER now for attempting to re-enter a place where he is barred. Wink

His posts were very contributive and constructive - unlike a large percentage of the posts here. However, I do accept that I cannot do anything about the banning.

Unfortunately, the rules are the rules. The website owner is the person who decided them (in conjunction with the moderators). You break the rules, you get the appropriate sanction as laid down in the rules. The rules are relatively simple here; they must be because as far as I can tell, till this last week, nobody had received a strike/warning for several months.

The host has also decided independantly of the rules that a couple of people were not welcome. It is after all, her website and her choice.

I'll also say that there are many many websites to talk about theatre, not least the website created by Fogey as an alternative to this site but many others exist. Quite why some people insist that they must return to this website as opposed to others baffles me. That's not by any means a slur on this place but like my bar analogy earlier, if I were not welcomed at one pub, I'd try another down the road.

The original post was directed at Salome, she may find it offensive. She may ask for it to be taken down, if it is, it will be marked as a deletion, it's not serious enough to be a strike/warning.

Now go back to having your wordy conversations, quote within quote, line picked out by line arguments with Font at the other website. Whatever gets you going, because it does nothing for me.

I don't know if this has already been addressed (so if it is I apologize), but I think it might be beneficial to have a subforum for education. We have members with a broad range of education, from people still in high school to people who have graduated from college. For those looking at college for musical theatre/theatre, for those who want to brag about their alma mater, or for those who want to know what actor went where, an Education forum could be very helpful.

Very good idea. And there's a reason BWW has a separate Student board.
Eponine93

I think someone may be sending me email spam through the boards. I just today recieved a junk email message for a theatre program in England. I live in America and have never signed up for any theatre programs online. Since I hardly ever get junk mail and the chances of me getting randomly sent a theatrical solicitation from another continent (my address has nothing to do with theatre) makes it likely spammers are sending junk to users' individual personal emails. Which is bad. I'm hiding my email in my profile, but still...

Take a moment

Guys can you all take a moment to examine your signatures on the site? Some peoples signatures may well include far more hits of the 'enter' button than was intended and some signatures are vast expanses of 'nothing' which I guess is better than vast pictures taking over the layout of the threads they are in, but a signature that goes

*I'm in a group*

Check my website at www.google.com

Isn't good for the smooth running of the site. Just the ONE 'enter' between lines will be fine folks Wink

(Also, check there are *NO* 'enters' or spaces after your signature block, this is another problem we're having!)

I have the same. I cleared out most of my cookies though, and it stopped doing that. wow, windows was actually easy to fix... Shocked

Can I make a request to sticky my dear College Audition thread on the Auditions forum?

http://www.musicals.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=55961&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

It's already got a TON of information on there.. and in the next year and a half or so as I keep doing research it will only grow. Yes, it is my child.. and one could argue that I only want it stickied for personal reasons.. but..

Honestly.. there is nothing else like it on the site, and it's something that alot of people need help with. When I started my search.. I found that there aren't many places to go for this.. So I decided to not only do all my own research.. but to try and make it something that would help other people too. If it were a sticky, I think it'd get the attention it really deserves.

I second Syrso2yrsAgo's request, but one problem is when you sticky too many things, they lose importance.
Bianca.

can I question a sticky?

the 'if you're auditioning for _ don't sing _'

It's rarely updated.. and doesn't contain much information... and at least I personally have never used it as a tool. I think it was a fun game, but.. it was more of just that.. a game.. and not a solid information piece. especially when people began the 'justtobefunny' answers.

I agree with stickying the college thread.... we get so many 'I'm auditioning for college, blahblahblah HELP!' posts, and maybe a sticky would direct attention to the people who can help, and the people who need it.
jazzygirlsings

I third or fourth that...not sure which, but it is helpful for a lot of folks looking at colleges...

I second this...at least this. I think this forum would really benefit from an area only for education.

Yes I am in favor of sticky-ing this thread! It's great and it will definately help me in the next few months as i pick colleges!
Bianca.

yay!!
I really am working hard to make this contain as much information as possible, and it really is nice to see that it's being appreciated!

Request granted. I'll keep an eye on it.

I'm not gonna un-sticky the other thread mentioned a couple of posts back about what not to sing. The reason being is that the thread was placed there and 'stickied' by the site owner.

The poster is however right that too many stickies makes them lose meaning.

I have moved this to here and locked the thread so please put your suggestions here, thank you.

Some things in fairness are beyond the control of the moderators. By all means make suggestions, it's up to the site OWNER whether to implement them or not.

However, the suggestion that only shows with 30+ posts or whatever in them should be considered is a nice idea but wrong. After all, I could take the time now to go to every forum that doesn't have 30 threads in it and hey-presto Wink

The other problem is that you cannot muck about with the board too much too often. We had a radical overhaul just over a year ago. In my opinion, it's too soon to change it again.
