TALK ABOUT THE FORUM HERE

This thread is especially for all board members to air their views about the forum and about the work of the moderators. You can say whatever you want, good or bad as long as it is polite.

In return for your posts and comments we promise to listen to all your points and come back to you with an answer to any specific questions. We cannot guarantee a very speedy answer as things will be taken seriously and discussed before we can reply but we will answer as soon as we can.

All we ask is that you keep this thread free from all personal issues and free from rudeness to any other member. Thank you

Any posts about this subject on the forum will be moved here or, if they are rude, deleted.

I'd still like to find out if this will happen:

How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and Me and My Girl are two forums I don't see on the new list. Another note somewhere leads me to believe Grease is gone too, although I don't know that for sure.

Is it possible to have some of the threads from the disappeared forums moved to the Other Shows forum? There may not be enough discussion to sustain separate forums, but the info posted in those forums included song breakdowns and character descriptions that would still be very useful for people searching for info currently.
Aimee

If the threads you want were more than 3 month old I'm afriad they are gone. When Sally did the re-org they were ditched to make more room, sorry.

Otherwise, if they are still about and you tell us which ones they are, yep. we can move them for you.
SunsetSongbird

Wow when did all this happen? Everything's so different. I didn't think I was away for that long....
Aimee

It happened about a month ago. Maybe a bit more. Smile It soon becomes normal.

That's really frustrating. I can't point to specific threads, like I said, it was years of accumulated knowledge. That was a really short sighted decision. There should have been some attention paid to content before they were just trashed.

I do sympathise. I know it gets done here every once in a while. I've seen it at least twice since I've been a member. I can't say any more cos there is no more to say other than sorry we can't help you out.

I used to come here a lot more frequently until the mods banned everyone who made MdN interesting, and then came a Rule that said that posters may not critique the mods. Kad, myself, Mel, Ciaron, PatrickDennis, Jennyanydots and some others protested this in a number of threads.

So we went and made our own forum, and it's going pretty well. If you'd like to check us out, look at my sig. A lot of the people who protested against the, frankly, fascistic actions of the mods are mods over there.

That said, just because I disagree with a lot of what the mods have done doesn't mean I hate them as people. Aimee tucked me in one night, which was awfully sweet of her.

I think we old-timers and disgruntleds come here to see if MdN is any better.

I moved this cos it was posted in the wrong place.

Also, actually we only banned 6 people over a period of about 6 months. They were Evan M, Evan G, James, Vimalakirti, Lophy Poo, Howdy Doody. Then the new board was formed. Since then we have also banned Mel, Patrick Dennis and ChuckWagnerFan. That’s it. Nobody else has been banned form this site. All these people repeatedly broke the rule and yet were given every possible chance to play by the rules. They chose not to. Also who are you to say who is interesting or not? You’re not banned. Does that mean you’re not interesting? You also mention Kad [not banned] Ciaron [not banned] Jennyanydots [not banned] are they not interesting?

*Edit Fontinau was banned on the direct instructions of the owner. I will not go into detals here as it was not a mod decision. She had her own reasons for banning him. He was told about this in an email.*

Also, also, you are allowed to critique us, here in this thread, that's what we put it up for. You can also email or PM. Just be accurate and polite and don't be surprised if we correct errors and defend ourselves against, lets call them, 'inaccuracies'
Pounce

I was just thinking how well things seem to be going here at MDN since the "break-up". We're told things are going well and are harmonious at the other site and we don't seem to be having problems or complaints here except by the occasional former MDN poster who now has a home at the other site.

The divorce is finalized yet the EXs keep coming back to continue an argument. Why reopen old wounds? Let's just go our separate ways. There are some cross-posters but I guess they didn't have much of a problem with the mods.

You former members have the board you want. Please stop trying to save us.

He isn't banned now though is he?

He had his old user name revoked as per the rules [go read them]. Only the people listed have been actually banned from the site.

But he, at one time, was banned.

Check the wrestling thread. Oh, and I'm not bitching. I'm pointing out the Ciaron was banned, which is true, and for some reason seems to be a huge offense to YOU.

Can we stop with the: "He was banned" "No he isn't" "Yes he is!" stuff. I'm tired of it!!!!! Brick wall Ciaon(sp?) was banned at one time, but he is on now. Ok!? We can't change ours and others past actions, so deal with it!!!! d'oh!

To Ban or Not to Ban

We are arguing technicalities here... Was he banned? According to the past postings, a "name" was banned. The member returned under a different name (the "Real" one, I believe) that has NOT been banned... So is he banned? Technically, no...

Pounce, you're neglecting to mention (1) that there's more talk about MFdN on MdN than there is about MdN on MFdN these days, and that a considerable portion of that talk is your own (thus making you a hypocrite for whining about "reopening old wounds") and (2) that the reason some "cross posters" don't express problems with the MNET mods is because they know they'll be banned if they do. Now some cross-posters post both places because they like MdN AND MFdN, I'm not denying that.

Fontinau went from zero warnings to a full ban in one night, he's sure of that. CWF might have had the same thing happen to him.

Can just stop desussing this because I'm sick of all the fighting. Okay, let's just pretend that we all get along and don't bring up anything else about what happened in the past.
Aimee

Actually Fontinau is in a different bracket, you're right. He was banned by the owner on M.net directly not the mods. I will alter my post to say that.

CWF was banned after using about 3 or 4 different names. All of those names broke the rules, were given warnings [strikes as they were called before] etc etc as per the rules. Anything he says to the contrary is not true.

I just wanted to say that Fontinau is not the only one on Sally's hate list. I know for a fact that other people have been told by mods that Sally does not want them there.

Mumsytype wrote:

It's the prerogative of the site owner to decide whether or not she wants certain people posting on her forums. I don't know of any other people who've been told by mods that Sally doesn't want them here, however I do know of plenty who have had to be reminded a number of times of the rules that Sally has instigated for pleasant conduct and respect for all forum members.

As far as I am aware there is NO 'Hate List' (what a childish idea), just a site owner who's had enough of people behaving on her site in a way she considers unacceptably rude and aggressive, and who has decided to do something about it. It's the behaviour that is unacceptable, not the people. And you'd think that it was simple enough to do something about it, i.e. post in a pleasant and acceptable way?

I know it is her perrogative, and I was just pointing out that Font was not the only one.

And lets leave the insults out of this, you know I only used "hate list" as a way to show that there is a list of people who are not welcome here. From now on, so as to avoid being called childish again, I will call it the Unwelcome List. There is nothing wrong with said list, I just wanted it to be clear that there is more than just one person on it.
Aimee

Yes Mel, you were permenantly banned that evening too, under the instructions of the owner, but you had had various other user names revoked already [which you know] and were about to be banned again anyway for repeated rule breaking.

And Mumsy didn't insult you.

I also think its fair to say that everyone who has been banned can consider themsleves on 'the unwelcome list'.

And yet again, this happened ages ago and is very old, old, ooooooooold.

I have a question...
When I first attempted to register I tried with both of my email adresses (one is for friends, one is for work) and it kept coming up with "Sorry this email has been banned." They were both hotmail adresses. I tried with my friends email address, also hotmail, and that wouldn't work either. Only when I tried with the university email I am forced to use at uni was I able to register. When I tried to find contact details to ask why, why, why god why, it said the page was under construction.
Is there any reason for this happening? Was that a pre-emptive ban? Or ios the system just anti-hotmail? I have never, ever tried to register here before so i was confused.
Aimee

Hi, I am glad you were able to register at last. Smile

There are some free emails that you cannot join M.net with as. in the past, they encouraged trolls to register under many different names. Hotmail is one of them, sorry about that.

As to the contact thing we will check and get back to you on that one.

I had a thought. Because this is where im headed with my life. I see a section for actors advice. Production side advice. What about the business side. Producers, box office staff, ushers, artistic directors. Theatre owners. Maybe I'm the only one interested, but i think it would be great to see my old stomping ground to have a place to discuss these things.
Descartes

I don't think there are a lot of producers/theatre owners around these boards Emmy. I'm sorry.

Des.
emmy05

I've always had this undying passion for theatre. i've tried acting/dancing/singing. Done the crew positions, directed stage managed. But my first paying gig was as a house manager for a non-for profit theatre which got me to tsep back and take a look at the business side. i've thought about getting a masters in arts administration but I wonder if i really need it. Maybe just a few good business classes. Its a new path to look at but keep my passion alive.

cabaretfreak

While I think that having a business sided board would be great, I have the feeling that it will end up like the techie board, underused, due to the overwhelming amount of performers.
qpidsangel

who the hell cares about performers, you wouldn't be onstage without both the business people and the techies. whatever.

But shows need performers, and without a show techies would be jobless, so respect should be shown on both sides.

Des.

it doesn't matter if you care for them or not but you need actors, techies, and business minded people for a succesful theatre. On this board, sure there may be more actors, but from any audition I've been to (on both sides of the table) you are only going to see one director and masses of actors auditioning for the few coveted roles. I do realize there are many young posters on this site now that are so excited about acting and hope they can spend the rest of their life singing on stage in a musical. But it's so difficult. Good luck finding your place in the theatre. I didn't know when I was 14 that I wanted to own my own theatre some day. So take chances and enjoy each performance.
Chelsey

I relise I am coming way late into this argument but isnt this a question like which came first the Chicken or the egg? Or whats more important the man or the women when it comes to procreation? I think its amazingly difficult to make your self a professional actor. But its also difficult to get in theatre through the tech side also. All in all as someone before me said if you find yourself a job in theatre Consider yourself very lucky and enjoy what you do. For the rest of us enjoy the crap out of community theatre because it is alot of fun and your still on the stage or working behind it.

I also appreciate your positive comments. This place has been running very smoothly of late, a minor huccup or two here and there but generally very well. It's going perfectly fine thankyouverymuch. Don't start something that doesn't need to be started. We have an agreement that they won't trouble us as long as we don't trouble them. It works fine, for the most part.

Right. On another topic, I was chatting on IM with LoneWanderer just now and he told me he's been IP banned from the site. He can't appeal because he's banned, and he knows not what he's done.

If I recall correctly some of those "idiots" were friendly with you and helped you out when you need it. Plenty of the discussion on the other site is very informed and intelligent. Yes there are stupid people on both sites but I don't feel its necessary to call either site worse than the other after all this lovely peace making has been achieved.

Who did you used to be? And honestly, I can't rememeber one time when they helped me out; perhaps others. But, lets not get into that again. Yes, perhaps the word 'idiots' is the wrong word if you're going to take it literally; it was an expression. Like when you call someone a 'dick' or 'gay' or an 'asshole'. Who are you?

Cool

Oh my, believe me...you don't want to drag it up! Shocked

Even though I was caught up in it...and might have even provided the seed to the eventual solution...I'm still not clear as to what and why it all happened. It was like an internal war which led to Lucifer running off with a large portion of the angels. Ok...bad analogy. Razz

But it only goes to show that sometimes a divorce while causing pain in the process of breaking up can make both parties happier in the long run. I have to agree that the atmosphere of discussion here has never been better in over 3 years of my participating. Some are on both boards and I suppose some of the other board just lurk, and some former regulars like a rogue fire spring up only to be quickly extinguished (thank goodness). Wink I will only post here which should keep the peace over there (at least I suppose so because I've stopped lurking there).

Whatever the mods are doing, keep it up because it is working. Very Happy And if there are some people who cannot abide the present MdN, just PM one of us and we'll show you the door and you might like it better over there.

No, no need to contact Beagle.

The reply is no, it's not a system error.

The second part of the reply is it's not actually any of your business why another member is banned.

As to the 'other' board, basically about 6 months [ish] ago a number of people were banned from M.net for grossly breaking the rules. Their friends got upset and demanded that we clarify the rules. When this was done a number of people felt that they didn’t like the standards of behaviour required and formed a new board.

That's it really.

I don't know if there could be another room for threads like "Random Facts About You" etc. because they're running on page 100+ now and it's starting to get annoying.

Definitely... no, I'm not agreeing with you. The word is definitely. If the thread annoys you, ignore it.

Anyways, a game room would be fun. I've belonged to forums that have 'em.

Sorry to bother you.

Is it possible to add a sticky to EVERY forum about audition help?? Because the "audition" forum hasn't decreased the amount of requests in the forum. It would be so nice. So whenever the next clean-up comes around, please consider this!

Thank you.
cabaretfreak

I think what would be cool is to have for each musical that we have, have a sticky that has all the ranges of all the characters. That way some of the threads could go away.
Jordan

Trouble is, nobody reads stickies! (OK, very few do.)

That's a really good idea. The Sound of Music forum have it now, and it really makes a lot of sense because we get so many requests for audition help - nearly always the same questions and the same answers.

I've thought this should be done as well, but I think it'd prolly be best if the people who did this were people who are/were actually in the show, or at least have access to a score to insure that they know what they're talking about.

That would be good. Maybe we can comare notes, so everyone knows where things are coming from and check them.

I have a question on rules. If a member is doing something blatantly inappropriate outside of the forum to other members of the forum (for example over AIM), would that still be grounds for a warning or ban?

Example if a member were to send naked pictures of him or herself to underage people over some messaging service that she knew through the forum.

HARASSMENT FROM BOARD MEMBERS USING OUR PRIVATE MESSAGE SYSTEM, EMAIL OR INSTANT MESSAGING PROGRAMMES.
Occasionally some of our members have had problems from other users of the site harassing them through the PM system on musicals.net, by email or via instant messaging programmes (like AIM or MSN).

The moderators take this seriously, so please inform us if you feel you have been targeted in this way. However, there is little we can do about the behaviour of members outside the site, e.g. if you are contacted through an instant messaging programme. Our best advice is to block or ignore such abuse. Where the PM feature on musicals.net has been used, there may be more direct action we can take. Even when there is nothing we can do directly, if you inform us of abusive behaviour outside the site this may assist us in making the best decisions about how people behave here too.

As far as I am aware, there have been no complaints about harassment.
Jordan

And just for reference, sending PMs to people on this website slagging other members off *IS* actionable when complaints are received.

Just for clarification, what *IS* "slagging other members off"?

Also pointless threads by someone in particular should be locked. I saw one that was locked. It's so annoying having stupid threads.
what_the_heck013

The MusicalFans.com forum has similar stickies. It works well.

It is, that's the best thing about the way this place is now, things are a lot more civilised and I like it like that, I think most people do.

Well getting rid of the trolls was a great idea but now this site is kinda boring. So is the other one for that matter. They need to be shaken up a bit. I for one miss the 20 page arguments over Tim Rice over Sondheim. Sure people got nasty but people also learned a lot of stuff too.

Or even picking on Aimees nails. She was always a good sport about it (at least I always meant my remarks in good fun).

Without delving too deeply into the legal definition of libel and slander, it's saying (or posting - the same will apply hereafter) unpleasant things about another person that may or may not have a factual basis, but the saying of them is calculated to spread ridicule, disfavour, and generally damage the good reputation of that person in the eyes of anyone reading the statements so made.

C'mon, nobody's that naive on this site, surely? If you deliberately call someone a slut, slag or hussy, or say nasty things with the intention of causing them distress, pain or loss of reputation, you're 'slagging them off' (Which btw is the technical London phrase for libel)

There is an element of subjectivity in libel, which has caused many a legal case to founder on the rocks of interpretation and intention, but it's pretty basic at this level.

If you say nasty things about someone deliberately, with the intention of causing them hurt or damage, you're in breach of the Forum rules and will be given appropriate disciplining. Or, to use the technical phrase, 'we'll give you a sorting-out round the back, mate'.

I just didn't know the term "slagging them off" - that's all. Thanks Smile I'm just a dumb Murcan sometimes.
