Crwaford takes the cake *sigh*
He's the original- the way the role was MEANT to be portrayed. Antonio Banderas makes me laugh. Yes, Gerard was okay-

note: I LOVE Crawford's laugh.

Antonio just doesn't fit for me... *blinks* just... yeah.
Orestes Fasting

Hmmm. Hugh Panaro and John Owen-Jones of course. Alexander Goebel, Peter Jorde, maybe Steve Barton.

I'd love to hear Matt Cammelle as the Phantom.

I don't think there is a full recording with Warlow as the Phantom. I've looked but all I've come up with are a song here or a clip there. If it turns out to be an actual recording though you must let us know!!

I didn't know Anthony Warlow sung as the Phantom. I'd love to hear that.

He was the original Australian/Melbourne Phantom (though his run of a year is somewhat overshadowed by the fact that Rob Guest took over and then performed it for a record of seven years). He was the youngest actor to play the role (at the time anyway)* and was apparently fantastic. It's relatively easy to get your hands on a recording of The Music of the Night but you'd have to search a little harder for others.

*Found all that info on Wikipedia

I was fotunate enough to hear Anthony Warlow as the Phantom (it was the first professional show I saw). I couldn't believe it was possible to sing that well! Shocked

The Australian cast never recorded, much to the disgust of all musical theatre fans of Australia. A petition was made and sent to ALW (I believe) but nothing came of it. Anthony has recorded some of the songs on his various CD's, which is where most people would have heard him.

Apparently Anthony is coming back to Phantom in Melbourne. Maybe this time they'll make a cast recording...?
Buff Daddy

I literally just heard!!! I almost peed my pants! Wink

"Internationally he was regarded as one of the greatest Phantoms. He is a terrific actor with a sublime voice." - a quote from the article

Earl Carpenter is the best Laughing

And I've seen him over 20 times
DefyGravityFan

I saw it with Robert Guillame when it first came out to Los Angeles in the early 1990's....I saw it on Halloween night from front row center! His performance truly gave me the chills.
tommo2k

Having seen John Owen Jones and Earl Carpenter live and hearing a few others (and watching te awful film version), I must say that John Owen-Jones is by far the best I have heard. Earl is OK and Gerard Butler is crap!
Jekkienumber24601

Gary Mauer, Colm Wilkonsen, John-Owen-Jones, Hugh Panaro.

But all time favorite........(drum roll).........

I think that John Cudia is vair good.......but Michael Crawford always. Those two are my favs.
Paula74

Hugh Panaro. I first saw him in the role last April and he impressed me enough to see him a total of fifteen times as the Phantom.

So far, none of the other Phantom I've seen come close to him. But others I do love include Jeff Keller, Mark Jacoby, and the Swedish Phantom, Mikael Samuelson.
Mademoiselle Lanoire

My favorite?

Anthony Warlow (the RUG really needs to make a cast recording this time around) > Yamaguchi Yuichiro > most anyone else > Colm Wilkinson
DefyGravityFan

Hands down.....

Robert Guillaime!!!!! He was so wonderful! I saw him twice and on the 2nd time, it was Halloween night, front row center!!!! Couldn't have gotten better than that!!!
Trevor

I definately love John Owen Jones.
bwayluvor31

Brad Little, Michael Crawford, and Anthony Warlow (Although I love him more as Jekyll/Hyde)
Glinda Upland

Michael Crawford~His voice is stuck in my head
John Cudia~My first Phantom- The one that started it all!
Gerard Butler~I know most of you don't like him, but I do!
Ramin Karimloo~ I haven't heard him, but by my friends storys, he sounds amazing.
Hugh Panaro~Haven't seen him either, but again, my friends also have (those lucky brats! How come I didn't go with them...)

And that leaves...

My McGillan! I haven't heard him either, but I will in June!
Gwen

...I've only heard Michael Crawford and watched Gerald Butler on the video...(all you lucky people saw it live, I didn't get to see it when it came by.) But I'd say I like M.C. (hammer!) haha. Yeah. Michael Crawford I guess.

It's not official by a long shot, but quite a few people who have spoken to him lately say he won't be renewing and his contract ends around the beginning of April.
Ulla Dance Again!

I saw him last April and I thought he was great, so I'd definitely reccommend catching him the show.

My only qualm was that during MOTN, I couldn't quite hear him because some person's car alarm was going off... but it's NYC...whatcha going to do about stuff like that? Laughing

The problem is the layout of the Majestic and the stage door. The wing of the stage is just a few steps from the stage door. The stage door opens into an alley that just funnels sounds right in.

I've heard sirens during STYDI and PONR.
Ulla Dance Again!

Yes, it isn't the nicest layout.

I think sirens went off a few times but I remember trying to pay attention to MOTN while alarms and sirens were going off outside. And all the while I was thinking, "Not during my favorite song...PLEASE...not during my favorite song..."

It was still a good show... just that they need to get soundproof walls or doors or some form of sound-proofing.

If
he doesn't renew...based on past experiences...they'll announce his replacement sometime in March.

Ok. I will keep a look out then.
Insanity Redux

The only phantom I cannot stand is Butler. His acting is great, his voice is painful though. I'm a stickler for the classical sounding and a strong vibrato especially for Phantom of the Opera. His voice seemed to weak to fit the part.
