Favourite PhantomsI posted thios somewhere else, but I can't find it.
My top five Phantoms are:
1. Paul Stanley (Toronto: April thru October 1999)
2. Jeff Hyslop (Canadian production and subsequent tours 1990 thru 1999)
3. Colm Wilkinson (Canadian production: 1990 thru 1993/4)
4. Gerald Butler (Film: 2004)
5. Peter Kyrie (Toronto: 1999)
Who are your favourites in the role?
Andy.

Ghost
|
Colm Wilkinson had the the raw energy and power, but his voice was far from hypnotic or charming. He is still my favourite, I think.
Crawford had the soft hypnotic voice, but he just doesn't have it in him to be scary, brutal or even very angry.
John Owen-Jones has a phenomenal voice, but his acting is just a bitt stiff.
There have been many good ones. I would be very interesting in hearing Paul Stanley as Phantom.

Micheal Crawford is the very good English Phantom for me. ><

Jemima Flute
|
1. Ted Keegan! He was absoultly perfect. His acting was the best I'd ever seen, and his singing was exactly what an angel of music's should be.
2. Gary Mauer. He was fantastic playing oppostie his wife. His MOTN was gorgeous. I loved his 'angry phantom.' I'd seen him as Raoul before, but I love him as Erik!
3. Brad Little, My first Phantom. He defined the role for me (but others elaborated ).
4. Gerard Butler. I love the movie, and Gerry does his parts very well. His acting is my favorite aspect, but his voice is pretty nice too.

John Owen-Jones, every time. Nobody else will do.
I think Peter Karrie is funny, and I want to pat him for committing the most massive list of bloopers I've ever seen.

1) Carl Sanderson
2) John Owen Jones
3) Michael Crawford

Your Angel
|
1) Mikael Samuelson's Phantom (Stockholm 1989-1995) has a certain "Crawfordian" softness but when he gets angry he really lets you know that he's not a guy to fsck around with.
2) Kiyotaka Imai. (Tokyo 1999) Well, I'm a huge fan of male singers with deep powerful voices.
3.) Peter Hoffmann. (Hamburg) As above.

BwayJuvinile

Howard McGillan
Hugh Panaro
Anthony Warlow
Brad Little
I am surprised how many people put Gerald Butler on their list, he would be on the bottom of my list as one of the worst (more because of vocal ability then acting ability, but he did ruin the acting portion of MOTN).

Peter Jorde - Denmark 2000-2003
John Owen-Jones - London.. forever....
Earl Carpenter - London
Mikael Samuelson - Sweden
Flemming Enevold - Denmark
Ethan Freeman - London, Vienna and Canada
Saulo Vasoncelos - Mexico (and soon Brazil)
Michael Crawford - everywhere....
Hugh Panaro - Broadway
Yuichiro Yamaguchi - Japan
Masachica Ichimura - Japan
Kyiotaka Iman - Japan
Henk Poort - Holland
Hans Peter Janssen - Belgium
And the list goes on and on...... But it's NOT including: Gerard Butler, Steve Hanley and Paul Stanley.....

Well i've only ever heard 3 phantoms which were
Michael Crawford
Gerard Butler
Paul Nichols
And my fav is Michael Crawford, his strange, kinda geeky voice has a nice ring to it, and you can hear the notes he sings as well. Gerard came close as he had more emotion in his voice in the movie, just lacked when going high. Paul Nichols, only heard him sing Music Of The Night on some CD, sounded good, but kinda no emotion.

I have never been a fan of his voice I have to say, except on "Blondel" as he suits the role perfectly there!

He is horrible, and he can't act. He's touring in Dracula at the moment which is where he belongs.

Mine as well. I do not think he would even be on my list.
I LOVE:
1. David Gaschen (current Broadway understudy, my all-time favorite...he is absolutely phenomenal, beyond words amazing. He was just so perfect, I wish he was the main actor who did it so I could see him again)
2. James Romick (his final lair scene had me sobbing hysterically, it was perfect)
3. Hugh Panaro (Especially favoring his AIAOY reprise)

You know what? I have always loved Michael Crawford, and he will probably always be my favorite Phantom. But as much as I hate Raoul, I really love Steve Barton, and as much as I love Michael, I want to hear an Erik that is frightneing and has the scary temper. Is Steve good in that capacity? I really would have liked the chance to hear him sing Erik. The other Phantoms I like are Brad Little and Hugh Panaro. Oh, and Robert Guillome!

my phantomsok ive only seen pahntom live once but ive seen 2 phantom movies (1925,2004) and i have the original cast recording sooo....
1.Gerard Butler (soo hot, plus the people whom were casting the Phantom for the 2004 movie wanted a rock star-like voice and that was a very good idea considering Gerard was perfect!)
2. Michael Crawford (the Phantom's voice is supposed to be hypnotizing and entchanting and theres no better way to describe Michael Crawford's voice in Phantom)
3.Lon Chaney (1 word: GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! too bad he was beaten and died in the end )
4. Hugh Panaro (he did have a WONDERFUL voice!!!!!)

Hands down, my favorite Phantom is Peter Karrie. I *love* his voice and I think he portrays The Phantom's emotions flawlessly. He does a good job at scarying you without overdoing it and is equally as good with his character's sympathetic moments.
I've also enjoyed Paul Stanley as The Phantom. He seemed to play a more sensitive Phantom. Same goes for Gerard Butler.
I also like Crawford's and Michael Ball's portrayal of the character from what I've heard on my CDs. As for non musical portals, I adored Lom Chaney's portrayal. He is my favorite Phatnom after Peter Karrie's.

Yes. Stanley was a very sympathetic Phantom. He actually called his approach to the role as the "Phantom Psychie," because he drew on his experience as a rockstar to potray the role. If you think about it, that's a perfect way to approach the role.
I loved Butler's tourtred soul in the film. I see a lot of Chaney in his Phantom. Again, the "rock star" motif works perfectly for the Phantom.

Brad Little (ditto)
Ernst Dieter Suttheimer

The "PLEASE NO!!" bunch, though they sometimes entertain me:

Gerard Butler (Butley.... )

He was the original Australian/Melbourne Phantom (though his run of a year is somewhat overshadowed by the fact that Rob Guest took over and then performed it for a record of seven years). He was the youngest actor to play the role (at the time anyway)* and was apparently fantastic. It's relatively easy to get your hands on a recording of The Music of the Night but you'd have to search a little harder for others.

I'm surprised by how many people put Colm Wilkonson on their list. This is not said trying to bash Mr. Wilkonson, as that would be pointless because I've only ever heard him in Les Miserables, but more out of curiousity. From what I've heard of his voice, I just can't see him as the Phantom.

Maybe you should listen to his Phantom first instead of judging everything from just one thing. There really is no way of telling how one's performance in one role is based on his performance in another role that is completely different.
And I do agree w/ urbanangel416. I like his Valjean better than his Phantom, too.

I actually found a clip of Antonio Banderas singing a song from Phantom... doesn't sound too bad. I think it's from a concert for ALW, he and Sarah Brightman perform a duet (I believe it's "The Phantom of the Opera").
My friend loves Hugh Panaro. I haven't seen him onstage, but I've seen clips of him perform and listened to him on my friend's iPod... so I have to admit he's amazing.
But my favorite would be Howard McGillin. I saw him on Broadway and he was amazing - just amazing. He was so good that he made me want to go and give the Phantom a hug.
I love Michael Crawford too... I grew up listening to him.

Who is he?
You mean, Colm Wilkinson, perhaps?

Mmm it makes me so happy that Ted Keegan's on so many people's list. He's from my hometown, and gives benefit concerts a lot here. If you ever have the chance to meet him, do - he's the sweetest guy.

CALM down. My cousin calls him "The Phantom with a cold". I think Wilkinson is quite unique in many aspects (both positive and negative), but I definitely see what she means. He sounds like he has a cold half that CD....

I just loooooooove Michael Crawford!
I've been captured by his voice since I heard his Music Of The Night(duet with Barbra Streisand, who is also one of my favourite singers) ,and OLC is PERFECT.
Colm Wilkinson did a wonderful job with Rebecca Caine, they were Valjean and Cosette in Les Miz OLC......God,how I wish Michael Ball could play Raoul in POTO OCC!!!!!!!LOL
Anthony Warlow was great in The Main Event,he was only 28 while performing phantom,I think he was too young.Anyhow,he did a better job in The Main Event, that Music Of The Night was wonderful.
JOJ is great,so is BL.But my DEAREST Michael Crawford is SUPREME.
GB is geeky. The whole movie is GEEKY.

No disagree. Crawford is too smarmy and I can't imagine him seriously seducing Christine. Butler beats him by far his sexy rock and roll quality is brill and I wish I could jump into the film and knock Emmy Rossum out of the scene and be Christine as he is so darn sexy.

^ my thoughts exactly.
I like Crawford (only because I've basically grown up listening to him sing). I also like Hugh Panaro - I've watched clips of him in POTO and he's amazing.
Gerard Butler is all right as the Phantom. Singing-wise he did nothing for me, acting-wise he was okay. My problem was that he should've been more grotesque (but that's the make-up people's job, not his). I'm sure that sounds odd but I felt like it was a little strange to have the Phantom being more attractive than Raoul. Eh, then again that's just me.
I also really liked Howard McGillin (saw him on Broadway). I thought he was fantastic... and his voice is so beautiful.

I got the Canadian recording not too long ago, and I'm not overly fond of Wilkinson. While it's not ghastly, it's just not the Phantom for me.
I saw Antonio Banderas in the Albert Hall concert, and he wasn't half bad. I would have preferred him over Gerard Butler, vocally.
I'm fond of Gary Mauer, though. I downloaded his 'Point of No Return' off of his website.
But, my heart belongs to both Howard McGillin, who made me sob hysterically and Hugh Panaro, who also made me sob, and is not only an incredible Phantom but an incredible person as well.

I haven't heard Rohan Tickell as the Phantom, but he's going on my list as well... he blew me away as Piangi, and he was such an incredibly nice guy, very down-to-earth, great sense of humor, just overall an awesome guy. I'd love to be able to see/hear him as the Phantom. I know that he's the understudy - does anyone know if he's actually gone on as the Phantom? |
Just so you know, Sam hiller is the understudy now, not rohan. But if you really want to hear him, search his name on youtube and youll find a clip of him singing the tital song!
