O/T what I have been up to and what I am doing next! Long...Hi
Ok I work as a sort of security guard with a large well known UK company.
And as I sat there one evening getting paid over £2000 in a good month watching my cameras and answering the phones and listening to clasical music, it sort of dawned on me that I am not getting any younger and that I needed to find myself a job that would see me through untill I retire.
First step was an education, I did not get many exam passes when at school and those I did get are no longer mentioned in the desired section of job offers. After a while I thought it was best to go with a BA honnors Degree course with the Open Univeristy, my choice was History, the only subject I really like these days. I also changed jobs within the company for slighlty more money, with a standard 48 hour working week that required no weekend or holiday working-in return for a more demanding job. And if I screwed up badly it's out the door and goodby. They have a saying at work if you screw up, you only ever do it the once.
In order to get a BA Honnors in history you have to do a number of courses, some optional some not, each course has a score in points if you pass and to get a degree you need 360 points. I have passed two courses so far since I started in 2005 and thus have 120 points. My new course starts in 2008 and its theme in the story of medicine between the 15th and 18th centuries.
I also decided to learn how to drive, in order to spend less time on busses and more time in studying. So this year 2007 my typical week I was doing my normal job Monday to Friday, plus trying to fit in overtime if possible for more money, I was also studying Mondays to Sundays and taking driving lessions Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays.
I wish I had done all this stuff when I was in my teens and not when I hit 40 this year!
I am now the proud owner of a brand new Renault CLio Campus 1.2 ltr car with metallic paint, air con and a CD player-which I had to wait six weeks for and almost drove me mad waiting for it-if you pass your test and can by new dont wait too long I was so rusty it took nearly three hours to drive home from the dealership without killing anyone.
About two days after I passed my driving test I found out the place I am working is closing down, so I have a choice of working at other locations or getting made redundant and getting paid off.
So with my education under way and my better mode of transport in place, it was time to start to find another job to do. I decided to become involved in a trade that cannot be done on a PC or by somone with no qualifications, after looking around I found an interesting article on the internet about a trade that some, including school/colledge leavers shy away from and there is a slight skills shortage...
PEST CONTROL-thats right boys and girls I am going to become a certified RAT CATCHER!
I wil also decide soon weather to tie it in with enviromental heath and or social care of some kind. The jobs on offer are less mony than I am getting now but I need at least one year of practical field work to get experince before I can perhaps go private and earn more mony.
So in year 2008 I will be doing my normal job of 48 hours a week, doing as much overtime as I can and studying Mondays to Sundays untill October and of course doing my pest control course at Coventry Univeristy in March 2008. March I think is going to be a bit busy.
And sometime around September I could be loosing my job and have to find a pest control comaony to work for-nice.
This year entertainment wise I managed to...
See my first Opera at the Royal Opera House in London-it was Carmen, really good it was too, I will be seeing the Opera of Cinderella this year too.
I saw the musical Parade at the Donmar with ex London cat Helen Anker-very good very sad and one of the best I have seen.
Saw Spamalot in London, a very short musical only an hour each half, only for Monty Python fans I think.
Best fo the year so far was the play Equus with the guy who plays Harry Potter in the films of the same name and Jenny Agutter, the first time I have ever seen her on stage. If it comes on again anywhere-get a ticket.
And of course I saw Cats twice in Liverpool and went to San Francisco on holiday for a week.
So far my education including new computors has cost around £2500, so far with another £1000 needed for the pest control course and £7500 for the new car-don't worry I can afford it-I am so busy I hardly ever get out the house to spend anything.
My wish next year is to see a Cats production in another country-any country!
I wish you all a happy Christmas and a happy new year
Oh! this morning I tried to get a photo of my Cats colection only to find my cat had got there first, there were tails and leg warmers and paws all over the place-I will try again later.
