o/t costuming help?

I would've posted this to the CCDB, but I'm too lazy to sign up and read the rules just for this, especially since the costume advice I'm seeking isn't Cats-related--just about tails, which is why I'm posting it here at all.
I'm giong as a Narbonic Gerbil and I want to make a brown tail with a black tuft at the end for Halloween, but I've never made a tail. I'd buy one, but they all look like crap--they're stiff and full of cotton and the tufts are too small. Can anyone offer advice on how to make a decent tail without spending too much time or money on it?

I would suggest using rope for the length of the tail, tie a knot in the very end and then tie lots of lengths of black yarn round the last couple of inches. space the knots around the rope so the ends fall all over the knot? Does that make sense? Not sure I'm explaining well. At the top of the rope, double it over and wrap a same-ish colour yarn round to make a good strong loop, and then attach that to your wait on a belt, strap, whatever goes with your costume...

What kind of rope? I'm now imagining that big fake-looking kind of rope from movies that take place on ships, but I don't think that was exactly what you meant.
Thanks for your input, by the way.

I guess you could call it cord instead of rope... the last tail I made I used a length of cord that I'd pulled out of my hoodie - you know, the dangly bits that you use to make the hood tighter? They're really good for tail bases, very strong.

I think there should be a tutorial here... www.jelliclecostumes.com

I make my tails using the cord from hoodies too, it is very sturdy! My last tail (Bomba) was even inspected by some of the cast of cats and I was told that it seemed even sturdier than the ones they wore - which I'm sure they were just saying to be nice since they're good friends, but still lol! If I were you I would use the method that everyone else has mentioned - either that or commission which for tails can be really quite cheap!
Either way let me know how you get on! I like your costume idea alot! It's very orginal!

Thanks, guys. I think I've got the general idea now, and a better idea of what materials to use.
(Little_Nell, which tutorial were you suggesting? I accessed the German one from the page, and the Yarn one with some URL creativity, but I couldn't acesss the others.)
Little_Nell

Yes, the yarn one should be the one you need but once you get the idea you probably won't need it - it's just difficult to try and describe! Oh and have a look at the tail belt section, don't know what your plans are for attaching it to yourself but this is the easy way. Smile
