O/T Cats make up in the new Dr Who showHi
I saw the show last night and thought the Cats make up were really good.
I loved the wiskers!
If they were to do a film for the cinema could they use the same make up effect for the actors. Would it be too hard/hot to work in.
Would some of the bright colours be lost?
Spatz.

I don't think this makeup would work for Jellicles - perhaps because I'm so used to the human shape faces altered only be makeup. I think it'd be very hard to dance in - but there wouldn't be a colour problem.
I think the trouble is that whereas the shading in Cats makeup lessens the lower jaw, to create a more triangular feline face, prosthetics have to build out the cheekbones to get the same effect. This somehow isn't quite as effective... they're just not as pretty as Jellicles can be!
It'd be interesting to try transferring Cats style makeup onto that sort of shaped prosthetic tho.

Are we talking about the cat nuns?
The Estonian production looks like it used similar (though much much cheaper) appliances for all of the actors. They were likely those cheap cold-cast latex cat noses that you can get from a costume shop.
The result was not very pretty and it looks like they dropped it--they don't appear in the photos from the final production.
The cost, discomfort, sweating, and time in the make-up chair would also go up quite a bit.
I think there's also another reason the characters are nuns in full habits: the faces are well done, but where it would start to be more noticable is the seam between the actor's real face and the applaince.
If you're interested in similar (though not quite as polished effect) you might try googling lyonshel. They do use bright colors, but you don't get the fur.

I was actually thinking how much I disliked the cat people faces in Dr Who as I was watching it on the weekend. I just don't think they're particularly feline or nice looking... but then I supposed they are 'aliens' and rather than real cats. I still prefer Cats makeup!
