Not while I'm around, my audition song - advice needed!Everyone in my company thinks I would be great ast Toby, and want me to really go for it, so I will. For the audition song, I have to sing Not While I'm around, but make it an original audition piece. Here's what I thought I'd do...
-have a chair in the middle of the "stage" and imagine that Lovett is sat there, and basically sing the song to her, but facing the panel of judges.
-I'd also like to act the sequence out to Mrs. Lovett (about the demons), keeeling, jumping and making good use of the area avaliable.
-However, when it gets to the second "demons" verse, look really scared, as if he really isn't as tough as he makes out.
Should I hold the tears back, or le them come out. Will they add to the effect of Toby's love?

I think if its natural emotion that you're feeling, and you really want to cry, then just cry, because if that feeling is strong enough to get into your characterization of Toby, through all the character work that I hope you're doing, then its probably going to work in the scene. I dunno about looking scared, though. The song's all bravado - Toby's a kid. He doesn't realize that he can't protect Mrs. Lovett. He's an innocent.
