Not so sure about Idina...

Alright, am I the ONLY one who did NOT like Idina as Maureen in the movie?

I will say that I LOVE her voice, and on Broadway she was AWESOME as Maureen...but she changed her character for the movie (which I feel is understandable because I'm sure she wanted to spread her wings)

I mean, she was in tango maureen and she was incredibly sexy...and then in the protest she walked in like the coolest thing in the world...and then she performed it like a NERD and then in La Vie Boheme she was this TOTAL sex pot, and later on when she "proposed" or whatnot she was back to being this weird dork...i don't know...

she just wasn't consistant, and wasn't "on fire" enough...

just my thoughts!

=D
ShadowInTheWings

I think Idina tried to humanize Maureen more.

I thought she did a good job of it, it certinaly makes me kind of, almost care about her (can you tell I don't like Maureen as a character?).

I liked what she tried to do in the proposal scene, but I don't think it quite worked.

As a great fan and perfomer of 'Over the Moon', I can say that Idina's original version is my favourite. However, in the movie her performance was bad OTT- I'm not sure, but I got the feeling she was selling out a little. I know that Over the Moon is OTT, but supposedly in a quirky, funny way. I think her 'leaping out of orbit' sequence was distastrous.

I actually liked Idina in the movie. I've always preferred her Maureen because she gives her more dimensions than "I'm a big ditz who can't make a commitment". Her Over The Moon was MUCH better in the OBC days but then again I don't think that scene translated well to film at all. She probably had to bring it down a lot for the film world. But overall, I thought she did a great job of portraying Maureen's own inconsistancies, from her sexy side to her manipulative side to her selfish side to her rare concerned and caring side. That being said, I hated the proposal scene. It just seemed way too out of character for Maureen, who obviously has a problem with commited relationships. It would have made more sense if Joanne had asked Maureen and, out of shock or whatever reason, Maureen answered yes.

Well, I actually never saw it on Broadway, but I did listen to the music non-stop, and I think that (judging from the music) Idina did WAY better in the show. But as I've said before I've never actually seen it.(':-

You aren't that unique. No one is.

I've said it before and I'll say it again...

Idina's voice is dead.

She acted fine and was very sexy. But her voice is dead.

Hey-I just thought it'd be a somewhat funny way of bringing up a new topic

I TOTALLY agree with the proposal proposal! lol
Luc

I still love her to death. We're secretly married, but I haven't told her yet.....or our children.

Rethink "somewhat funny."

YOU ARE NOT ALONE!!!!! I diddn't quite think she did the part in the movie quite as well as when I saw maureen on stage. I prefer her on stage anyway...the stage show is so much better

No need to be rude here...and you are right about one thing...you ARE a very angry woman...I don't think I've done anything wrong to you, so I'd really appreciate if you would tone down your remarks please.

Do you know what you've just done? Asking TVAW to tone it down is like asking a rabid Satanist with weapons on hand to tell Lucifer to get f*cked...you just don't do it.

Well hey, it's worth a shot...I think it was Miss Anne Fank who said "Despite everything, I believe that people are really good at heart." and I agree.

=)
lolliball91

i actually agree that in the movie maureen seemed a bit quirky .
Maureen was always who i saw myself being in rent, until i saw the movie. and than i was like, wait, this ISNT maureen?
it just didnt feel right to me.

I don't know. I think Idina's Over the Moon was better on the OBC recording (which is all I can judge by seeing as I never saw the OBC live) but some of the parts (for some reason I love love love her Take Me or Leave Me in the movie, I think she and Tracie just sound really good playing off each other and whatnot) are stupendous. But I really do love Idina and I think she did really well.
Ep-Griz-Reno

Well yeah-take me or leave me-i HAVE to agree there-it really was sensational how they played off eachother, and especially the riffs that the "new joanne" added-i loved it too
renthead29

yeah the take me or leave me was definetly a fun song in the movie
convict24601

That was the first Rent song I've heard. It was in my head for days. Idina and Tracie did so wel with that scene in the movie.

I always loved Take Me Or Leave Me. Such a catchy piano riff.

Is it true that Larson wrote that song late in the rehearsal period for pre-Broadway? Someone told me he wrote it the day before dress rehearsal.

Really great song and I love Idina's ad libs on the OBC

Andy.
Luc

I definately like it more in the movie soundtrack. I really like Thom's voice better than Walker's.

I don't think it was THAT late, but it was the last song written for the show. There were several before it that just didn't work.
audreydarling

ok..well back to the subject..I thought Idina was OK in the movie, her voice sounds more trained..but I love how raw it is on the OBC and can imagine her performance was much more free and coheasive. I thought "Over the Moon" didn't translate well to film at all! of course that was after seeing a brilliant performance of it on Broadway by a fantastic Maureen. I loved "Take Me or Leave Me" it was a powerhouse as Idina and Tracie worked wonderfully together. I agree that the proposal scene didn't work very well ..I think the original cirucumstances of TMOLM are genius. I don't think it was Idina's fault, probably the director wanting to go in a different direction. I found her performance really great at times like "Happy New Year" , I LOVE that cat suit..but I do think that the movie didn't really do the stage Maureen justice.
!ILOVERENT!

I liked it. Wink But I didn't see her OBC performance so it isn't really fair for me to compare.
