Non-American theatre stars who made a historical impactHey, I'm doing a report, and I wanted to do something relating with theatre, preferably MT. This person has to have contributed to history in some way (theatre history, in my case), and be from somewhere outside the US. Any suggestions?

Lotte Lenya (German)
Maurice Chevalier (French)
Martin Short (Canadian)

If you mean theatre in general (or just musical theatre) then Sir Noel Coward is the man for you.
Actor, composer, lyricist, playwright, director, producer. He wasnt called The Master for Nothing.

You could do a whole report on The Redgraves. It's not one person, per se, but it'd be one hell of a report I bet.

What about the Barrymores??
Sir Lawrence Olivier?
Julie Andrews?
Gertrude Lawrence?
Angela Lansbury?
Judi Dench?
Maggie Smith?
Yul Brynner?
Leslie Caron?
Most definitely Anthony Newly as a major influence. He was like a "more modern" Noel Coward in terms of Jack of all trades (although in style he was obviously nothing like Noel Coward).
Andrew Lloyd Webber
Rex Harrison?
Gilbert & Sullivan
Boublil & Schoenberg
Ivor Novello
Kurt Weill

Tree was so facinating. There is a great book I own called 'The Truth About Pygmalion" it deals with how the 3 mightiest egos in theatre came together for the Original Pygmalion. George B. Shaw (the author) Herbert Tree (the producer and original Higgins) and Mrs. Patrick Cambell (the original Liza)
. Fun and facinating book.

Laurence not Lawrence
although Gielgud is a better choice not only did he pioneer the modern shakespearean theatre vand was Olivier's mentor..he was the nephew of the great ictorian actress Ellen Terry. he died at 97 having spent 82 of those years on stage

I'm still kicking myself for not taking the opportunity to see Vanessa in the play "The Year of Magical Thinking" on Broadway last year; Especially since she probably won't be on stage for many more years.
