no ted neeley! So I saw JCS today in SF. And me and my friend were so psyched since Ted Neeley was supposed to play Jesus and we're like in love with him even though he shows no expression in his face:lol: . So when the show starts they announce that in todays performance the role of jesus would be played by some other guy. People started booing, i felt bad for the understudy.
But overall i felt that the show was quite good. The understudy did a really good job. He was a little shaky at first and stumbled on a line in "Whats the Buzz" but he got a lot better as the show went on. And his "Gethsemane" was one of the best versions I've heard. Overall I was very pleased with him.
I thought that the guy who played Judas was awful though. He did not have a very wide range and everyone time he tried to go high it just sounded like shrieking. It was not very pleasant to listen to. And he did not do "Damned for all time" or "heaven on their minds" justice at all. So overall i was really not impressed with him
The rest of the cast was great though so if the tour comes to your city definitely check it out, hopefully you'll get to see Ted Neely

People are so rude to the understudies.
(I heard that Ted Neeley had a cold that night, by the way)

That really sucks for you. I saw Ted, near his hometown of Ranger--in Abilene, Texas. And he kicked serious butt that night...I had chills running up my spine, all night. I didnt get to meet him, but my friend did...I was jealous.

Did you see the Judas that was from Living Color?

I agree, Corey Glover is not what he could be.

He grew on me - he was better in the second act. But I really missed the high notes.
He was better than Ted Neely, though. I'm sure he's a nice guy, but he did not provide a wonderful performance.

Glover wasn't too bad... I think his majoir problem is he isn't a theatrical singer, he's a rock and roll singer, so... that I think really hindered him.

JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR is a rock opera, though. Maybe not the mist theatrical, but so what?
Fenholt, Neeley, Anderson, Dennen, Elliman, Vereen, Zolli & Kunze to name a few are all rock singers. For the record, Anderson sang jazz, funk, gospel, pop and yet he is the quintessential Judas.
Glover does a good job, but he has potential to be better.
Andy.

I just saw JCS in Salt Lake City on Feb 10th. I had heard that he has been battling Bronchial Pneumonia for a while and as a result did not perform all week here. But I was excited to hear that he was going to be performing Saturday night. And for being a 63 yr. old man and dealing with Bronchial Pneumonia, he belted it out as if there was nothing wrong with him.
Having been a HUGE, HUGE fan for over 3 decades, and have never had the opportunity to see it live, I was extremely excited to be seeing him. Even if he had been able to perform, I would have loved and enjoyed the performance anyway! I actually really liked Corey Glover as Judas, and yes it was weird not to see Carl Anderson, but Corey made the character his own. I loved it when he came out and sang Superstar!
Who all has seen the Farewell Tour? If you have, wasn't the crucifixion and the finale AWESOME! I had chills through the whole performance, but was transfixed at the end. The dramatics were wonderful and I have to say that this was probably the best show I have seen in a long, long time.
Just thought I would share my feelings.
Thanks!
