No Johnny Depp in Pirates 4?Ok, so now that they changed something or other over at Disney, Johnny Depp is alot less enthused about returning as Captaian Jack Sparrow. Suddenly they aren't sure that he's going to do the movie. What do you all think about this? Will you still go see it without Captain Jack?
In other news, the movie will be released May 2011, will start filming in the spring, is now called Pirates of the Caribben: On Stranger Tides, and has recently confirmed that Geoffrey Rush will return as Barbossa.
Over thoughts on these developments?

If he's not in it, the movie will SUFFER, both financially and artistically IMO. End of story.

They need to stop making these movies. You can't take a confusing, weird, and boring film script and fill it with breath taking special effects to make a good movie. I'm sorry. Write good plotlines and maybe I'll like your movies!
So, in other words, if Johnny ain't doin it, the movie shouldn't happen.

What's happned is that Dick Cook, who until this past week was president of Walt Disney Pictures, left the company. Why this is significant in terms of the Pirates films that that Cook was very prominent in bringing Depp onto the original film and also championed Depp's acting choices for Jack Sparrow when most others were initially highly against it. During all this time Cook and Depp became very close. Now that Cook is no longer with the company Depp has gone on record as saying he is "less than enthused" about the next film titled PotC 4: On Stranger Tides. He's also said now more than ever it will really hinge on the quality of the script as to whether he actually ends up doing the film.

So...as long as Cook was there, he'd have done it with a really crappy script?

While the second film the series was weak to say the least...I've really enjoyed the movies...especially the first one! I thought they were great popcorn/adventure films and Depp's portrayl of Jack Sparrow alone makes the film for me.

I just think he would've been more apt to do it if nothing as as a favor to Cook if the script had been weak.

I think if Johnny doesn't come back, the movie should be scrapped. Making Pirates without Sparrow is like doing The Music Man and writing out Harold Hill. It would just be dumb. Can you imagine a movie about Barbossa looking for the Fountain of Youth by himself? There would be a huge emptyness to the movie without him.
And God help me if they get that Jack Sparrow wannabe Russel Brand to do it.

Pirates of the Caribbean 2 and 3 were of a really low quality. Instead of picking up the epic story that the original left off with, they were concerned with cutesy misadventures that didn't really change where the characters were by the end. Also, they sacrificed character development and substituted exaggerated nods to the original script designed to make the audience recognize something in continuity and feel proud of themselves for knowing the story so well ("Why is the rum always gone?", Jack's progression from a slightly refined effeminism to, apparently, a full-blown fairy, etc.).
The only thing that surprised me about seeing this thread was that they were serious about making a fourth installment when the second and third are so infamously regarded as so terrible. Without Johnny Depp, who was the driving force of the series, it will be more like a cheap spin-off than a continuation of the story.
As a firm believer in capitalism, I realize that Disney will have its expenditures on the fourth movie returned, plus make a little bit of a profit and I'm proud of them for keeping on keeping on as long as there are people idiotic enough to pay to see film I wouldn't use to wipe my ass, but as an artist, I'm a little embarrassed for them that they don't seem to know when to stop and regain a little dignity.
But then again... who still respects Disney anyway?

I honestly doubt Disney and Bruckhiemer would make the forth film if Depp wasn't involved. My understanding of where the company is right now in terms of really wanting to up the quality of its films (I.E. no more G-Force and Beverly Hills Chihuahua) lead to Cook's dismissal. Plus with John Lassetter taking a more prominent role not only in Disney animation, but Walt Disney Pictures as a whole I believe we're going to be seeing the payoff of that sooner rather than later.
But like I said, while Pirates 2 and 3 were nowhere near as great as the first film...I still enjoyed them for the fun adventure movies they were. They were both incredibly flawed movies but I was more than capable of looking past said flaws to simply enjoy the eye candy...I don't say that very often...but with these three movies I could!

Were there any beagles in Beverly Hills Chihuahua? I'm curious to see it, but I don't want to waste my time if there won't be any beagles.

LOL, don't waste your time on it, Beagle, it's an awful movie. Drew Barrymore is a reasonably good actress, but as a voice over performer, she's one of the worst.
On topic, I think that without Depp the film just won't recieve the popularity that the other films had. He made the films what they were. Like Brock said, it'd be like Music Man without Harold Hill or Wizard of Oz without Dorothy (although we've seen how "wonderfully" that's turned out with Wicked...)

As I said...I would bet the farm that a Depp-less Pirates would never get produced.

I really loved the first movie, and my family owns the DVD. We saw the second and third ones in theaters and were more like, "meh." They're not bad movies really, but IMO they just aren't as well-written as the first (as with most movie sequels in general). But yeah, if Johnny Depp's not in the fourth I probably won't bother... he was kind of the redeeming factor as far as the acting quality/good dialogue/unique character went. I'm usually not really the action movie type anyway.

I thought the only reason they were doing a fourth movie was because Johnny Depp wanted to. Why on Earth would they do one without him - especially since they're so clearly out of ideas? They've already given the series two adequate endings (the first and the third) and I don't see what they could do with the plot now, seeing as the last movie left everyone sort of going down their own separate paths
...I'm slightly concerned that the new plot is going to revolve around Will's and Elizabeth's son.

They should have made the dog with the keys in his mouth a bigger part. And made him a beagle. And give him some kind of power. Like maybe he could fly by flapping his ears like wings, and shoot lasers from his eyes. Then I would see number four. We should let Disney know what we, the consumers, want to see.

Ok
A) The fourth movie WILL NOT happen if Depp is not on board.
B) How can you say they are out of ideas? Did the original trilogy fizzle out? Yes. However the new movies not only aren't to be a continuation of the original trilogy...they have a new writting team as well!
C) The plot of "On Stranger Tides" was set to be an adventure was Sparrow and Barbosa are forced to sail together on a completely new quest.
Just thought I'd get all that out there.

Kiera and Orlando have gone on the record saying that they have no interest of returning to the series, so anything involving their son would be LAME to the extream, IMO.

So far as everyting I've read, there are NO plot lines concerrning Bloom or Knightly's characters. They've both moved on and so the idea of utilizing those characters is moot. Which suits me juxst fine anyway.

Rumor has it that the new Pirates film is adapted from a pirate novel "on Stranger Tides," featuring the origins of a Jack Sparrow-esque pirate and a search for the fountain of youth...
