No Golden Globe Nods for RENT

I was really surprised by this...I know a lot of people on here are split in their opinions of the movie, but I personally loved it and really expected to see it get some nominations. I thought a lot of the nods were ridiculous and couldn't believe RENT was completely left out. I mean, Phantom got nominated so why not RENT???

In a way I agree. I truly loved the movie and thought it deserved some sort of nod, even if just for Rosario in a Supporting or Lead Actress catagory. But I really wasn't expecting it to get any. The critics have been tearing the movie apart and most of the audiences I've been forced to share the movie theater with have been far from accepting ( I think several of them had a bit of a hard time accepting both the musical and homosexual aspects at one time...). And then there were just people who plain didn't like it, even if they're fans of the show. But who cares if it doesn't win awards. Rent's message is worldwide on giant screens and I know that I am satisfied with the movie. More satisfied than I would have been from reading the original script leaked onto the net (I know many people really loved it and agree that was the script to win awards, but the thought of Maureen singing "La Vie Boheme" as her protest and "Light My Candle" as a dialogue, among other things, made me want to cry).

Relevance?

Is that really relevant? Even though POTO was a dire film, the films aren't being nominated in the same season. RENT's lack of nominations can only really be compared with the films that were actually nominated in its place.

ok yea i'm really mad that it didn't get nominated for even 1 and it better get so many oscar nominations

its something because the movie phantom acutally sucked horibly compared to the real show...Rent was an amazing adaptation of the real show sadly the only people who thought it was a good movie are the theater people...more importantly the rentheads

so yea i'm really upset

I'm not too surprised. The reviews are pretty unfavorable and awards usually tend to go towards the shows with the best critical acclaim.

RENT seems to be not so popular. I live in Los Angeles, a fairy large city, and it's playing at about 2 theatres or so near me. Pretty bad. A lot of people who I talked to who hadn't seen the musical didn't like it and were rather turned off by the homosexuality. Contrary to the major opinion (and to that of MdN), I liked RENT.

I really liked the movie. I am jsut shocked some of the performances didnt get nominated like the underrated Jesse L. MArtin. And Rosario Dawson made me like MIMI for the first time ever.

I didn't really expect it to go over extremely well with critics or award shows. I personally don't think "Rent" would have been the success it was on Broadway if it wasn't for the untimely passing of Jonathan Larson. It's a great show, IMO. . but I just don't think it's everyone's cup of tea.

I'm sorta glad it didn't become a big blockbuster MTV-style musical. . sure it would have gotten recognition. . but at what price?

I'm glad I'll have a great quality movie of one of my favorite plays that I can sit and watch any time I feel like. So, to me the movie is a success for the fans. It didn't bring a whole lot of new ones. . but that's okay too Very Happy

Less people in line when it comes to your town Wink

*sigh* I simply cannot believe how much the critics hated Rent. I've never seen the show on stage, so I went in not knowing what to expect, and I loved it to death. The ending was beautiful.

Quite frankly, even if Larson hadn't died, it probably would have been a success.

I will never undertand why this film was so hated

It was a good movie, but The Producers blew it out of the water as far as movie musicals go for this past year.

I was glad that Rosario Dawson was at the Golden Globes, it was nice to see her there. Very Happy

Oh, well. Too bad. The film wasn't that great, but most of the Oscar nominated movies aren't.
