New Song Book

So.. I went to New York a few weeks ago, and I picked up a few sheet music compilations while I had the chance at colony. A cole porter book, a R&H Romance book, and a Random Belter Standards book. The thing is.. as I begin to explore this book.. I realize.. I don't know many of these songs at all. I think they may be more Jazz oriented, but I know there is some Musical Theatre in there. I'm not much of a sight reader at the piano, if I must say so myself, so, I've scanned the songlist of the book. What songs do you all particularly enjoy/not know/not like/recommend for me?

Songs I think are good for auditions are:

Blue Skies - nice uptempo
More than you know - hard song but I love it (ballad)
Where or when - quite tough but a very good song
Ten cents a dance is a classic but needs to be done well to be effective
From this moment on - good uptempo audition song

Maybe this time (from Cabaret) is a great one...especially if you have a ton of passion behind the words. The version I have is pretty easy to sing, and it fits comfortably... The "belty" part is awesome too, and there are so many ways you can sing the song and it will still have a lasting effect.

Have fun with your new book!

"Cry Me a River" is a cool jazz song, if you ever need one. I'd save it on your 'need to learn someday' list.
I heard it on a Jazz 'divas' sort of CD, and liked it a lot. I'm sure you can hear it somewhere online.

Que Sera Sera is La-a-a-ame!

I would go on iTunes and search for some of these 'n' check 'em out.

If you're digging around itunes for 'em, Linda Rondstadt has a great version of When I Fall in Love, and I think Spring Will Be a Little Late This Year is Carly Simon.

I love Love LOVE Cry Me A River. I've sang/used it many of times and it always receives good feedback.

However, why did you choose that particular belter's book if you weren't really looking for so many jazz standards and more musical theatre?

had 20 extra$ to spend, and it had a few songs I really wanted, and I figured since my shopping time was running out I'd buy it to explore a little. I got a few other Musical Theatre Books too. this was a last minute toss in for the heck of it.

We're doing "Blue Skies" in my choir right now...I LOVE it. It'd be cool to hear as a solo!

I like "Lazy Afternoon"...It's often overlooked, but a really great sultry song... Smile
sunrae

"Stormy Weather" is an awesome song. I sang a solo in that once, and it's very nice and emotional. "Don't know why, there's no sun up in the sky, stormy weather....since my man and I ain't together....." It's prettyful. And shows a good range too.

"sentimental Journey" from what I remember is pretty boring until you get to the bridge part ("seven, that's the time we leave...." I think are the lyrics) but the verses are blah

That's another song I absolutely adore.

Oh how I wish I had a better jazz voice.
