New approach to Suessical

My director is doing a new approach to suessical where, get this, we all where black suits and the stage is all blank and there is a piano and stuff. It vaguely reminds me of the set for 2006 Company. She says it makes the audience imagine the set instead of sitting back and not listening. Not to mention half of us play a instrument at more the one time, I play the cat in the hat, and I also play piano, trumpet, and oboe. With a cast of 20, the whole contemporary theme may work well.

I still sounds alot like company. But I don't know what to think at this time.

Yes, but no. Not for Seussical. It's a good idea for a musical revue or something, but not for a bright flashy show that relies on the bright, flashiness. The Who's won't be Who-y, the fish won't be magical, and Gertrude's tail will be nothing exciting. This show is about colors and excitement, and without color, you can't have the excitement.

Sounds like one of those "let's save money and try to pretend we're being clever" things. I saw a Romeo and Juliet with the tag line "No sets! No Costumes! Just the words!"

We spent almost half the budget on instruments, the orcastrations have been tweaked to make it more contemporary. Think of thriller done with a orcastra and projection and floating doors.

There is one scene where I enter from 10 feet above the stage floor( we have this door that happens to be 10 feet off the ground and it also leads to the electrical system and, never mind) and look out upon the scene and I almost fell during our first rehersal.

Then theres the scene where I enter on the firepole and....oh boy.

and for the major numbers....
