Neil Simon's FoolsHas anyone on here been in the play, Neil Simon's Fools, if so, did you like it? hate it? Who were you? and What was your favorite joke from the show?
I played Magistrate Kupchik, the 79 y.o. lawmaker and enforcer, probably the smallest supporting role in the show, almost a bit part, I can't say I had any favorite joke in the show, it really was the delivery of the jokes by our cast that made me crack up, I like the show, the eperience was kind of weird for me though, because I did it this year at my school, and this year is the first year that my township's arts council is trying out this thing called the Teeny Awards, like the TONY Awards for schools, and being this the first show that I have ever been judged in, I was so nervous that I lost my confidence during points of the show and I didn't end up performing the role in the exact way that I wanted to. I just got way too hard on myself and brought the critic in me onstage. I happily have gotten over that in the next show that I did though.

My community theatre did it a few years ago. I chose not to be in it because I was only sixteen or seventeen at the time, and I didn't feel like there was really a part for me in it. Of course I went to see it though. It's a very cute show, and everyone had fun with it, audience included. It was an excellent vehicle for the guy who played Leon, and the woman who played the doctor's wife also really shone. Everyone was great, but those two were the standouts.
In addition to being a nice play, this was a very special production for the company because the director's late father, who was her guiding light and the one who introduced her to the theatre in the first place, had always wanted her to include it in one of our seasons - so when the time was right for us, it was really bittersweet to be able to stage it and dedicate the production to him.

After moving across the country, on my first day of high school in California I auditioned for this play and was the only Freshman cast.
I was also the Magistrate! The role actually got me a lot of recognition and I received an award at the California Educational Theatre Association Festival over our lead.
It was probably mostly due to my ridiculously loud, overbearing bellow of "NINE O'CLOCK AND ALL IS WEEEELL".

I played Sophia when I was a freshman. Unfortunately, the show never made it out of rehearsals. I haven't gotten a lead role since.
Still, I really liked the show and I'm hoping that one day I can actually perform it in front of an audience.

My school did it a while ago and I ushered for it. I got to see it two of the three days. I liked it a lot! :]

I've seen it and don't care for it much. The laughs it provides were nice chuckles but I never had a big belly laugh while seeing it.

The only thing I don't like about it is something I find to be a constant in Neil Simon's work. It's very easy for performers to get too loud and silly, and have the show just get boriNg and irritating as a result. This was actually not a trap that my company's production of "Fools" fell into, but I've seen it happen so many times. I've left Neil Simon productions at intermission before because I just couldn't take another hour of it. His plays need very solid directors and disciplined performers, which unfortunately you don't always have.

My school is doing it as one of the one acts!
It's...interesting. I was kinda annoyed when I read the script, but I'm not anymore!
It was because i knew the guy who plays Leon ... and the girl who plays Sophie .. .and was like 'grr...they kiss...not fair' but then i realized, 'Ha! I don't like the guy that plays Leon anymore...so it doesn't matter '
But i think it would be fun to be in

Isn't it a full-length show? Maybe my memory is failing in my old age.

Yes! You're the first person I've ever come across to share this opinion with me. I've seen so many Neil Simon shows that leave the audience shifting in their seats by the middle of the second act. His shows really do require actors that can hold an audiences attention and an intelligent, well-trained director, which, like you said, aren't always used.

You're correct. Fools is a full-length show with two acts.

It's cute but I would never do it again. I was Mishkin. It was whatever. Kind of funny... nothing ridiculous.

yes, it is a two act play, but they're cutting some of the excess dialogue because it can't be more than 50 minutes, but that pushed it.
crazy i know.
