need help with looking into licensing....

OK, I have an idea. Just started brainstorming it tonight. I live in a very small town (pop. 1,000) which is a half hour away in any direction from a theater. Both theaters around us are not so good. But I was thinking trying to put together a summer MT show might be successful. But I don't really know how to go about it.
the most specific thing I need to know is- do you pay for licesning up front, afterwards, or both? And how can I get an idea of how much it will cost when there is no actual theater and no production dates or any of that info they ask for?

There are a few possibilities for perfomance spaces- my church, another church, scout hall and an outdoor pavillion/stage. The run would probably only be for one weekend, maybe 3 nights. No space would go over 100-150 seats, I shouldn't think. Tickets would be fairly cheap, maybe $6-8.

I've been drawn to The Sound of Music, because it is well known, has kids, and I've been in it before/familiar with the show and music. But I'm also looking into maybe concert scripts of something like The Music Man.

So, can anyone out there shed some light on this beginning process? thanks!

I'm not sure about when you have to pay, but I do know that the way we usually do theatre around here is to have a business sponsor the event. Like we had "Once Upon a Mattress presented by (Town Name) Association of the Performing Arts and TLC Credit Union."

I think they gave us like $3000.

You will need to pay up front for the rights to perform the show. You can get royalty quotes from whoever handles the show, but you will need to have dates and a venue in order for them to give you the quotes.

You may have some trouble establishing an account with R & H, or Tams-Witmark, or MTI if you are not an organization, I don't know. You would need to contact them and find out about that.

wow! I go an e-mail today from someone at R&H that said to call them and discuss it. I never thought I'd get that kind of response!!!!!! I didn't get it til this evening so I will call tomorrow and see what he says.
