Need "spooky"Here's an interesting audition notice I'm going on. It sounds kinda wierd, but it's a reputable company.
| Quote: | | Please come prepared with a song that you can sing a cappella; 30-60 seconds will suffice. You don’t have to have a highly trained voice, but you need to be able to carry a tune. And we’re looking for an eerie quality of some kind in your voice. Whatever song you choose (and you shouldn’t worry too much about choosing it), we’ll want you to sing it slowly, wistfully, spookily. |
Not sure exactly what they mean by eerie. Straight tone?

I think more in the tone/material is the implication - maybe something ethereal or gothic in a way?
My first thought was Secret Garden.

What about the title song or "I Do Miracles" from "Kiss of the Spider Woman"? Just take it up a few keys (the original key is waaay low unless you're have a super crazy low range- I think both, in their original keys, go down to a low C) and you should be fine. There are great 16-bar-or-fewer cuts from each of them, too.
So, there's my suggestion.

Thanks for the song suggestions. I'm actually wondering more about the spooky vocal tone they're looking for.

think along the lines of Diana Rigg as mrs. Danvers in "Rebecca" or Perhaps mrs. Sowerberry in Oliver.

do u have 2 do musical theatre songs for it? u could look at some of annie lennox's ballads such as love song for a vampire or into the west - great ethereal and spooky stuff there

No, this is for a straight play so I can sing whatever I want. I was actually thinking of something Loreena Mckennity...
