Playing a man is easier than you may think. The best thing to do is first ask your director if they want you to play it as a man or not. Then, if they want you to, the best way to go about it is to not go over-the-top, trying to seem as manly as possible. Just deepen your voice. Pappycat has played a man before and may be able to give you some tips.
music is my life!!!

watch how men behave. a good example is how they sit - men don't cross their legs like women do.

also, lets face it - the mm isn't exactly he prince so you should be able to act it as OTT as you like in the funny bits. if you want to bring in a funny habit he has to lighten up the dramatic bits, go ahead!

you go, girl!

Uhh...the mysterious woman? who turns out to be the Baker's mother? Shocked

if you play it as a woman, the script would have to be changed a bit - especially in the witch's rap

It's been done before. I personally think it's dumb, but it's been done.

Ooh finally something I can help with!

I'm a teenage girl and I've played a LOT of men. (At an all girls' school, somebody's got to do it. Hah.)

A few things that are helpful:
-Be careful of mannerisms that you may have that are particularly female. I got a lot of notes when I first started playing men about putting my hands on my hips or shifting my weight from leg to leg as I stood.
-Observe how men stand because it's usually really different than how we stand.
-You may need to lower your voice or speak in a different part of your voice. I'd play around it it, but maybe talk to your director about that one.
-This is really random, but one thing I got yelled at for a lot when I was doing Hound was having the back of my suit jacket messy. The tech director kept telling me that having that part straight is apparently really important. (He may have just made that up to make sure I double checked every time I went on stage, but it was important to get a note on it several times.)

Hope that helped. Very Happy
