My thoughts on Passion.

A couple of days a go, I aquired the DVD of the OBC. I watched it a couple of days ago and what can I say about it? IT'S AMAZING! Sondheim's music and lyrics gave me chills about 10 times, as did Lapine's VERY well structured book. The music suited the piece so naturally, I kinda forgot it was a musical, as it went from dialouge to song so efortlessly. Donna Murphy gave one of the best performances I have ever seen! Her Fosca is so tragic, yet has a huge feeling of want within her. Giorgio (sorry, I forgot his name,) gave another excelent performance of his character, taking sometimes surprising routes to his character. Marin Mazzie as Clara, gives a performance with tremendous soprano arias coming from her and and lots of well developed, structured acting scenes. I was a complete novice of Passion before I watched it, so I hope I'm allowed to ask a few questions. 1. I know it's very easy to see that Tom Alderige (Narrator from Into The Woods) is in the cast, but was I correct in thinking I saw William Parry (The Boat Man in Sunday in the Park with George) as one of the soldiers? 2. (SPOILERS IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE SHOW,) In the end scene, is Giorgio mentally handicapped? It's just because I saw something that looked like a straitjacket laid on the back of the chair. Also, from the letter he recieves from the doctor gives the impression he had a nervous breakdown. All in all, it's now one of my favourite musicals and has some amazing music, lyrics, script and performances in it. I will definantly be watching it again.
