My Schools Wheels of a DreamHere is Wheels of a Dream, from my schools production of Ragtime. The show is in a Week. I know there white, and I know many of you will hate it because of it. But what are ya gonna do.. This isn't my fave Coalhouse. I like the other cast better, he has a much stronger voice and it has more of a deeper sound, but I still think zack does a great job. And yes that is a real Motel T. They fixed it up and it cost lost of money. But It looks really amazing, I remember when they first got the car it was all run down and rusty. Here it is. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pp6AydSM_7g |

I think it is actually really good! I don't mind that Sarah & Coalhouse are white but...just out of curiosity, what did you change the words to in the Prologue? i.e. "There were no Negroes and there were no immigrants."

^ ummm we didn't change the words at all...

Oh ok then, so you just sang about the black people that they wish weren't there even though there were no black people on stage?

Yea, even thought we are not black.... we are still acting as if we are.

well, not trying to be rude but, you should have chosen a show you could have cast. I take a directing elective at school and that is one thing that was stressed. If you don't have people to cast the roles, don't do the show. For example unless you have a 6 foot tall Indian, you can't do One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. With out enough black people, you shouldn't do Ragtime, because you can't do the story Justice (pun) |

Well done...but, I'm just curious: was that from the production, or was that just a dress rehearsal? Because the orchestra was having trouble staying with the actors, sometimes early and sometimes a little behind. |

It was two weeks before the show when some the daily messenger came to talk about our Model T. It was hard on the actors and the Pit because they had not done the song together as much, and the actors had just started to use the Model T on stage.

Ah, good. I was hoping that was the case! |

No, this does NOT work. Ugh. You can't do Ragtime without black people, the story makes no sense then..?!@#!@?#!@#. This kind of thing makes me so mad. There are certain shows where characters are supposed to be black, but it is not necessary to the story line. In other shows, it IS necessary to the story line. For example, in the script to Thoroughly Modern Millie, it describes Muzzy as a "glamourous, stylish African American woman", but there is nothing in the dialogue that discusses her being black. However, in a show like Ragtime, there is much dialogue and lyrics that discuss the fact that Sarah and Coalhouse and some other characters are black, and it is essential to the plot. I know this isn't your personal fault, but ugh, so annoying.

^ I know, it was very fustrating to me too, being in the show and having people come and watch the show and becoming confused at times. I was really scared people were going to give us alot of bad comments but honestly they didn't, well not that I know of. But I know alot of people had a very hard time following the story, but Ragtime is a very complex show to begin with. And thanks for responding in a polite way unlike some who freak out on me and leave rude comments when it isn't even my choice. |
