My school is finally doing this! Witch or Cinderella?

So after taunting us with it for the past 4 years, my high school has finally decided we're doing Into the Woods for our spring production. Needless to say, I'm ecstatic, and would really like to get a main role. I've already talked to the director about auditions, and we're going to have to prepare a song and a scene (already picked for us) specific to the character we're auditioning for. My dillema is, while I would love to do all the acting for The Witch, my voice really fits Cinderella best. I know I can be considered for both roles, but I'm not sure which song I should sing- Stay with Me, or Steps on a Palace. I've been a 1st soprano in choir up until this year when I switched to alto due to ridiculous amount of senior altos who graduated last year and army of soprano's who've joined our choir. I can sing down to a G below middle C, with my break around a G above middle C, and I can go up to an Eb 2 octaves above middle C in head voice.
Any advice with which part to try for? And if any past Witches/Cinderella's have any advice that would be great too!
oh and the auditons aren't until February, but I do want to start working with my voice teacher on a song soon.

So you cannot do both songs and need to pick? There's absolutely no way they would let you do both?

Is it possible for you to read for The Witch but sing one of Cinderella's songs at your audition?
The Drama Queen

I'm pretty sure we can only sing 1 song, but I didn't think about singing one characters song and acting the others scene. I'll definitely look into it.

Well, talk to your director, and maybe he would let you do like 16 bars of the witch's song and then 16 bars of Cindy's. If not, then I agree, your best bet would be different song and scene.

In my opinion you should perform and go for the role that best fits your vocal range and in which you would sound the best!

The reason why ITW is so great is because all the characters are rounded and have a range of emotions... so you won't be missing out either way. (gotta love sondheim... ahh love of my life...)

Also (and i hope no one gets angry at me for saying this) your look is very important when going for a role. have a think about what character your look portrays more... if you know what i mean. (I usually get bitchy, mean evil or judgmental characters just because of my genral look. hehe thats sounds awful but it's gotten me some FANTASTIC characters)
It's sad and annoying but looks are extrmely important in the business.

my dream role has always been the Witch - heres to hopeing!

Hope all goes well for you! break a leg at your audition! Smile

Ok, so I've decided to go full out for the Witch. There a tons of other girls going out for Cinderelle, but very few for the Witch. And I don't exactly have a princess-esque figure, and I think the Witch will suit me fine. Any past-Witches on here have any advice?

Talk to Amber and Lakme.

the witch is such of fun role, really go over the top
The Drama Queen

So I am definitely gearing my audition for the Witch, but our director just asked me if I would consider doing Cinderella as well, so I think I have a pretty good shot at both. She knows that I can do the singing for Cindy, so I'm going to sing "Stay with Me" and hope for the best!

thanks for everyone's help!
Amber

I've not officially played the witch YET (we open in 19 days), but I think I've been studying the role long enough to tell you....

SHE IS AMAZING TO PLAY. There's so much more to her than there is to Cinderella (in my opinion), and she has so much more going on. She has this awkward position of being the one who tells people "Don't do this, you'll look stupid and it'll end badly", but she also takes on a slightly antagonistic role in the course of the story (I think.) Her character is just so much fun to get into, and the songs are amazing, particularly "stay with me" and "last midnight". So...please, please please go for The Witch. You won't regret it. She is a real challenge to play, in my experience, but it's totally worth it.

^ I agree with Amber. The Witch is probably the best female role in the show. Go for it.
Not Dead Yet

Honestly, anyone can play Cinderella if they've got the voice for it, and truly great actresses can make her stand out. As written, the stronger role is the Witch, she's the one that's got the most meat, the most layers.
The Drama Queen

Thanks for all the input! I most definitely want to be the Witch more, but I just know I'm in consideration for Cinderella already. The convenient part about the Witch is I've yet to hear of anyone else auditioning for her, and there are at least 4 different girls going out for Cindy. So I am definitely going full out for the Witch, but there is a slight chance I'll get Cinderella. I'm just going to have to wait and see! I'd really be happy with either.

I think your director is dropping a hint, by asking you if you'd consider going for Cinderella. Maybe he can't visualize you as The Witch.

That's possible, but I really think its because I'm one of the stronger singers and Cinderella has the most singing in the show (her words, not mine, I don't know if thats true.). And to be honest, I don't really look the Cinderella-type- at least body-wise. I'm definitely not fat, but I put myself in a more medium category, definitely not fairy tale princess-skinny. If anything I would not expect to be visualized as Cinderella.
Anyways, the director told me to sing the Witch's audition song, and put on my form that I'd accept another role (which I was planning on doing anyways).

Well, I guess you're all set. Start preparing for that audition!
