My obligatory review (6-17-06)touring cast, saturday matinee, in charlotte, NC, at the blumenthal center:
nice theatre. 3 balconies. quite spacious but pretty. almost entirely sold out, which was good.
alright let's see. first things first: band sounds great. vin fanuele is still conducting and we love him.
terra's velma is growing on me. i saw things in her performance today that i didn't see last time. she's as elastic as a rubber band and certainly has a good deal of spunk. i've think i've just seen roxane, brenda, and dma too many times to give a fair chance to terra, but i will say that i was pleased with her today. i enjoy watching her dance. she has an amazing body. i want to have muscles like her when i grow up.
michelle was great. her performance has gotten more intricate and humourous. the girl is a powerhouse. the "roxie" monologue was exceptionally splendid today. i'll keep it at that because i know that y'all know that i would watch her reading the phone book if it was on a stage somewhere.
john o'hurley was HARDCORE as billy. ya wanted to dislike him but damn did he make it tough. he has a smooth singing voice and a wit that you can't miss. he ad-libbed some lines that had a lot of people cracking up over them. he looks the part and he can DANCE. and my favorite revelation was that he actually did a "billy voice" and a "roxie voice" in WBRFTG. it's been a long time since i've heard that, and it was welcomed with open ears. did i mention that he's terribly handsome? <-- which is a big thing, because i don't like men. GO SEE HIM IF YOU CAN!
carol woods is still rockin' out as mama. like a better version of queen latifah, the audience loved her. love the deadpan stuff she does every now and then.
kevin carolan was quite good as amos. nobody can touch rob bartlett, but those are tough shoes to fill. i enjoyed kevin a lot. he was humble and sweet onstage, and i fell in love with his character a little bit, which is what i was supposed to do, i think. (this is not john o'hurley love, this was teddy-bear-cute love.)
r bean will always be fabulous.
kevin is one of my favorite fred casely's
the male ensemble is looking wonderful. lots of eye candy, for those who are into guys. david kent is looking better and better, and there are some great "fresh meat" types in there too. WVTTS was great today, and that was in no small part due to the male ensemble. they are in top notch condition - i hope they keep it up!
the female ensemble is equally as scrumptious. with a wide variety of body types, i really enjoyed seeing a lot of new faces (to me) today. theresa coombe seemed to be the stunning version of what might be if dma and mdj had a lovechild and stuck it in a full body fishnet and said "you: dance." it was great to see nicole bridgewater up onstage again; she's looking great as usual. ivy fox is still whoopass. the new hunyak, jessica perrizo (sp?) was graceful and lithe, but a little thin for my tastes. she had soft features and movements, very much a classically trained ballerina. i liked her though. jill nicklaus was good as mona. not my favorite, but that spot will always be taken so i dont need to repeat myself.
coleen was out sick today and i got to see the precious pilar millholen (sp? oops) as kitty. equal parts fierce and adorable, i loved watching her in various parts of the show, particuarly RD and the trial.
hope i didn't leave anyone out.
if i did, well, i can edit this later.
54 times i've seen this show, and this was one of the tightest casts yet. worth a look if you're in the southeaster u.s. anytime soon.

ps - yes there are going to be some pictures for you, linda, but they are going to have to be cropped and edited before they're sent. and also, i am writing a review for a paper outside of atlanta that wanted a summary of talent before the show gets there (could they have chosen a more biased person to write a review??) so if you want that you can have it.

they're on my mom's digital camera, and i'm not there right now, so i'll have to wait til then.
also, the pictures need to be cropped because there are a bunch of candids that were taken, with me standing there looking like a moron, not realizing i was being photographed. none of them are posed, except a photo of john o'hurley and mdj.
unlike the chicago cast, you can't just take a picture of me and have it be aesthetically pleasing. so i'll cut me and some of the other unattractive onlookers out of the photos and send 'em your way when i get home.
i dont remember who all was fresh and who wasn't. all the men sounded like familiar names, and they looked like faces i knew, so...i'ma say it was just the gals. i'll send a complete cast list later.
