My Name is Bette Midler - What's Yours?

I just recently viewed the film version of Gypsy starring Bette Midler as well as the Halloween comedy, Hocus Pocus , also starring Bette Midler. In Gypsy, Midler's character, Rose, creates vaudville acts as a vehicle for her youngest daughter June. In every act, June says, "My name is June! What's yours?" In Hocus Pocus, Midler plays a witch that is determined to steal the lives of children so that she may remain alive (she was brought back to life by the lighting of an enchanted candle). In the movie, Milder's character decides to perform the song "I Put A Spell On You" at a Halloween party. Once she gets the crowd going, she says, "My name is Winnifred! What's yours?" I immediatley made the connection and wondered if Hocus Pocus was made after Gypsy, and if Midler added that line in herself as a joke. But, lo and behold, both films were made in '93 and it appears that Hocus Pocus was filmed first. I just thought this was kind of funny and wanted to share! Thanks for reading! Smile

Re: My Name is Bette Midler - What's Yours?

thats so interesting. i love that movie, hocus pocus. its like my halloween tradition. i watch it every year, along with the Garfield's Halloween movie haha. bette is hilarious in hocus pocus, i love her. i always wanted to be in that movie, being Winnie Sanderson..and if not her, Sarah Sanderson, cause they both get to sing. Its funny, i didnt realize untill just lately, when i started watching sex and the city, that Sarah Jessica Parker plays Sarah. Who knew she could hold a note! Lol.
Anyway, thats cool, thanks for the post.

SJP has had leading parts in broadway musicals, that's where she got her start.

Reading your post prompted me to look up the movie. When i found it on wikipedia.org, i found this:

When Bette Midler takes the stage at the town Halloween Party, she says, "Hello Salem, my name is Winifred! What's yours?". This is a take-off of the famous "Hello world, my name is Rose! What's yours?", a line from the musical Gypsy, spoken by Mama Rose. Bette Midler played Mama Rose in the television version of Gypsy the same year that Hocus Pocus was released.

Also:

In the famous graveyard fight, for a few seconds the music imitates the theme to Miss Gulch, from The Wizard of oz. (Miss Gulch is the kansas form of the Wicked Witch of the West.)

SJP was something like the second Annie or the first on the tour I can't remember. But yes she's been doing braodway forever. She played Princess Winnifred in the broadway version of OUAM back in the late 90's though many people hated her take on the charecter. I never saw it but heard that from every one I know that has.
