My Belting/Riffing Appreciation Thread

So I stole this idea from Bwayjuvenile, but I thought it was totally appropriate. I come across vids ALL the time on YouTube that are so fierce I NEED to share them! This thread is for anything that has amazing belting and/or riffing in it. It doesn't need to be crazy high belting or riffing, just phenomenal vocal ability from the singer. Smile

Here's the latest one I've been obsessed with for a few weeks. Though I saw her live the day before this was recorded (aka her 2nd to last night in the role), I'm SO glad someone posted this for me to remember how AMAZING she was. It's Heidi Blickenstaff's REPRISE to Poor Unfortunate Souls. Her riff at 0:27 is actually where Jebbykins (who I saw the show with) GRABBED me, because it was so intense. Just listen and love Smile She kicks Sherie's ASS!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFdZkR0cEQM

The second is a song from Elegies: A Song Cycle by William Finn. It's called "Joe Papp" and though the song is done by 3 MALES in the show (1 lead and 2 backups), these 3 black girls from U Mich decided to rearrange the song (dividing up solos equally), and be fierce with it. It's so good I'm using it for a cabaret I'm directing this winter Smile

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qE9PcwT_AY

Lastly, this was inspired by Gil, it's Haven Burton in the role of Fiona in SHREK. Normally she plays the Sugar Plum Fairy/Gingie (and also does a CRAZY gospel solo at the beginning of "Freak Flag" that is orgasmic), but here she is singing "Morning Person". Like Heidi, Haven kicks the orginal's (Sutton Foster) ass in the vocal department IMO.

LOL Jordan I saw the title of this thread and I knew you had to have made it Very Happy

And now, I present....HAVEN BURTON, aka, God.

:44-:50 always blows my mind. But the entire song she just expertly blends belting, mixing, and legit.

I KNEW this had to be Jordan's work, haha. I also love the Haven Burton appreciation going on.

I will definitely be posting here quite a bit. I ran into a few awesome videos this weekend that I need to share. Very Happy

Wow! I saw her in Legally Blonde and was less than impressed, but she does a really great job here! I definitely underestimated her. I think this role is much better suited to her than Margot was.

Having seen this show live, I never realized what a great production number "Morning Person" is. I was especially impressed with Haven's belting right after the dance break, which definitely would have been difficult. I saw Sutton Foster the one time I saw the show live, but based on this video, Haven is totally comparable to Sutton. Plus, she was hilarious in the role she already has in the show. Smile

Sorry to double post, but I just listened to this and OH MY GOD. WHAT? Heidi is so fierce. That literally gave me chills, and then made me wonder how someone even gets a belt like that. Whoa.

I know a lot of people might want to debate me on this, but I love Kerry Butler's belt, so I tried to find some good examples on youtube. But nothing beats hearing her live!

"Fly Away" from Catch Me if You Can, sung live sometime this past year on Sirius Radio:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XbFZBxpcXXs&feature=related

This is from when she was in Hairspray, so it's a little older, but I love it anyway. It's "Gee Whiz", sung on Seth's Chatterbox, and the voice she puts on is deliberately nasal- it's supposed to be sung in her "Penny Pingleton voice", but the part I'm impressed with is the belting that she does in the end without the character voice, around 1:14-the end:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wn0q1RRYTM4

This last video is during Little Shop, her performing "Somewhere That's Green". I love the mix and belt included in this one. A great performance!

LOVE that version of Freedom! I just wish Alexa Green from the CCM version and Helene could do a version, instead of Phoebe and Natalie.

Also, I don't like the key change in the Helene version (even though it might be written that way haha). The entire arrangement of the CCM version (including the word changes) are better IMO, but I do prefer Helene over Natalie. Here's the CCM version if you haven't seen it Smile:

LOVE Alexa in it Smile
SmallTownIngenue

I like the CCM version, but I just LOVE the Phoebe/Helene version. They just work so well together.

And okay there is only like, four seconds of fierce belting in this, but it's worth it. "Love and War" from the San Francisco try out of Legally Blonde. This song was cut and replaced with Positive, but it features the awesome Leslie Kritzer belting her face off from 1:43-1:47.

Though I LOVE Kate (esp. our bond over being Greek), i found the first song very annoying and whiny. The belted Think of Me however was GREAT! I just wish she could have tried belting the C and not mixing it, but whatevs, like she said,

"NO LEGIT!!"

hahaha. <3
SmallTownIngenue

She's got a great voice, but I personally find her belted Think of Me a disaster. You just shouldn't belt that song. But that's just me.
Jman383

Wouldn't it be interesting if she played Carlotta, and belted it when Carlotta does it the first time? haha. I think it'd be hilar

No, it should. It makes it a little more tolerable.

OMG LOVE. My friends and I were OBSESSED with this at school in Feb-March of this year. We'd literally go around singing, "Pull her hair and call her WHOOOORRREEE!" for fun. SO good. I will say, however, that it's a MIXED note, BUT, it's so well done, and in such a phenom placement, that it really shouldnt be done any other way. Loves it.

Or it makes the song more of a hot mess than it already is.

But whatever. I'll agree to disagree.

I love this thread. <3
Haven Burton blew me away right there, and Heidi has always been awesome.

I've been trying to think of some of my favourite YouTube examples, so here we go.

The UMich gang singing 'I Sing!' - Nina Sturtz' expensive belting and riff at 4:23 always gives me chills:

Jake Wilson, Colin Sheehan and Andrea McArdle riffing six shades out of 'Tomorrow':

Jazmine Sullivan kicking all kinds of ass with 'Home' from The Wiz - her riffs at the end are out of this world:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LwocqYj3f0

And finally, the queen of riffing performs in an 'ohmygoodnessthatwassoamazing Ican'tstopsmiling' kind of way - Lillias White, 'Don't Rain on My Parade':
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UEso3O71fDA

Just some stuff to mull over. Smile
Jman383

LOVE, felix Smile I got to see Lillias back in January when she performed in "Putting It Together" at Syracuse Stage. She was CRAMAZING!!

Here's an oldie but goodie. This is a girl from my hometown (Syracuse, NY) who happens to be the standby for Elphaba on the WICKED tour right now. Her name's Carrie Manolakos, and her family is actually friends with mine (as we're both Greek). Just listen to the BELTED high A's and riffed high C's she does. BRILLZ.

He was my highlight for the les Mis revival. He played all the leads but marius for some reason. He is a rocker, so his renditions are completly unique.

Carrie Manolakos is beyond amazing! Her duet of 'I'm a Star' with Allie Trimm is just jaw-dropping.

And the only response to Matthew's video of Kate Pazakis:

Belting and Bleeding- verb- When a person's belt is so high and loud that it sounds painful but is executed with completely healthy vocal production. Although a somewhat misleading name, belting and bleeding is often desired for powerful vocals. See Marla Mindelle/Kate Pazakis.

I'm kind of in agreement here. I like her voice for the most part, but the higher she belts, the worse it gets.

I recently discovered this. It's Laura Osnes singing "Fly Fly Away" from Catch Me if You Can at a cabaret earlier this year. I actually much prefer this to Kerry's, and I like Kerry. But Laura's diction is just so much clearer and I personally think her voice is stunning. The only complaint I have is her jaw tension/shaking. But still, a stunning rendition nonetheless.

Sorry to double post, but I'm completely obsessed with this little riff:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KmmYr_JQKNs

It's from one of Carmen Cusack's last performances in Wicked in Melbourne - I'm not really a fan, but she did like the perfect riff; she took the last two notes of "So if you care to find me" up to an F, and it's made of win. About 45 seconds or so in.

Like I think it should be written into the score, it sounds so perfect. I'm amazed no one's done it before.
Jman383

That was awesome! But actually, Shoshana did something quite similar long before. Look up any of her performances from the end of her run.

Speaking of which though, I found this on YouTube and was SPEECHLESS at the ending. I had no idea this was in the show. It must have been something they did JUST for Shoshana.

Watch from 4:30 onward Smile

The German Elphies have impressed me a lot. Particularly Roberta Valentini. Her "So if you care to find me" moment is frighteningly good here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3V5fGJhiRt0

Cool riff's. I actually don't digg the the performance after the riffs very much. He kind of sounds like Jason Robert Brown with a little more nasal quality.

^^ Hmm. I actually thought that was kind of bad. Weird. I mean, in regards to singing and especially riffing. He was speak singing most of the time, and when he did sing, his guttural smoker's voice was quite flat :/ But to each his own, I suppose.

that was .... interesting. I personally don't know why men need to be singing that high. But he sounded nice. together later, the did not sound nice.

She was FLAT. FLAT FLAT FLAT. for the whole first verse. Except for the note on "fast". Blah.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned the Queen of Belt, Stephanie J Block.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCL-daeDMoE

Freaking awsome voice. Even if you don't really like her, you have to admit that she has one hell of a belt. I'd give my first born to see her play Fantine one day Laughing ...

While I LOVE Sho's speech at the beginning of that, THIS is my fav Steph J. Block song Smile

P.S. This is the only video I could ever find with her riff on the final, "You cheated and you LIIIIEEEEDDD". LOVE. Also, her "Abused me" is the most honest in this video as well. I think it's so good b/c it's from previews. Ugh. Can't get enough.

EDIT: Lies. I found the "Lied" riff here too. Vocally, this is a *tiny* bit better than the one above, but the one above is more complete, and you can see her Smile http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjCLz-3Kobc&feature=related

Ah, a few weeks ago I was lucky enough to see Block and Tompsett perform a duet (I'd Give it All for You from SfaNW) - unbelievable.

Her entire concert was incredible actually, with some off-the-charts belting.

I'll come back later with links to goodies.Smile
