Musicals.Net- Your OpinionsWell?
What do you love about MdN?
What do you not particularly (sp?) enjoy about MdN?
Share your thoughts.
Discussing what we like and don't like about the forum shouldn't be against the rules anymore. That's dumb. In this forum we can discuss anything appropriate, so why not talk about this place?
I'll start.
I love the family aspect. Everyone here is really part of a great big family from across the globe.
DISCLAIMER:
Dear Mods,
Yes, there will probably be some negative comments about Musicals.Net in this thread. But it's okay, I promise. This isn't a suggestion thread at all, it's just a thread for comments/ thoughts. Please, no one take offense to this. I'm just tired of not being allowed to discuss this.

I love the supportive people and how open people are. I love how many loverly people I have met!!
I very much dislike the drama and the sometimes mean-spirited comments I read...
But generally the likes are greater than the dislikes

If there's anything right now that I don't like about MdN, it's that we're not supposed to discuss these things.

For my part, I like the fact that MdN (in common, I suspect, with most other forums) allows me to construct an identity for myself based purely on text and images, which functions as a nonetheless unique voice in this bizarre community. It allows me to function in and contribute to a society that's very different from anything in the real world (and I think drawing too many parallels between the sheer randomness of this forum and the world outside it is a very dangerous thing, and is probably responsible for people reacting personally/badly to what goes on here), but into which my love for musical theatre can be channelled harmlessly.
I must admit, I often enjoy the inconsequential arguing, the pretentiousness, the vanity and the never-ending circular arguments that go on in the forum, except when it is taken to extremes. Otherwise I can't help but smile, occasionally in exasperation, at the people who take this all so seriously. I also enjoy the pleasanter side of things, the constructive debating, the sharing of interesting information/data/stories/photos, the silly games, and the willingness of the majority of the active members here to make this a lively and friendly forum.

What do you love about MdN?
Well, I learned some basics about show analysis. And I pick up random facts here and there. And it's such a fun atmosphere, more or less.
Oh...
and Jaymie♥.
What do you not particularly (sp?) enjoy about MdN?
Some people's lack of ability to take a joke. There are many things I don't particularly like. However, some shouldn't be said.

What do you not particularly enjoy about MdN?
Sometimes people here can seem a little bit ... I don't know ... exclusive, maybe. I was accepted on the Les Mis board pretty quickly, and the jump to the social club wasn't hard, but sometimes I look around at other posters and think that I must have been pretty lucky to not have experiences that might have driven me off the board.

I don't really feel the same "family atmosphere" that some of y'all do, but that's probably because I don't care enough.
I just like to come and waste time on the internet talking about stuff I care about.
On the "bad" end, it always sucks when people take the internet too seriously, but that happens in most online communities, so it doesn't bother me too much.

Seconded, basically the same.
I don't know why i've never managed to grow that close to people on here even though i've been posting here for a long time. I enjoy posting here though, most people are very nice and supportive and the ones who aren't i just tend to ignore

I think it seems that everyone basically feels the same about it!
In regards to the family atmosphere that other people may not feel- I think most of that has actually come through talking to MdN users OUTSIDE of MdN. So that way I've gotten to know them better, so when I come here, it's like my friends are all here, ya know? If it wasn't for almighty Gabbly, I probably wouldn't feel the way I do now.

heh yeah, well if gabbly is revived i'd probably do that but now the only way to talk to people outside of aim really is through aim and i'm too scared to aim you guys if you don't aim me first,

I like the mods. They are very fair and are so sweet to donate so much of their own time and energy to help make this a safe and civil place, even though they don't always get the credit they deserve. And that Beagle is gorgeous both on the inside and the outside.

Re: Musicals.Net- Your Opinions | musikal_geek wrote: | | What do you love about MdN? |
I love long, winding discussions on cultural things. Plus, this forum isn't so serious, so one can post pointless crap just for fun, like games and such.
A lot of people here are reallyawesome to know, and some of those who aren't are nevertheless great characters I like to be aquainted with.
| musikal_geek wrote: | | What do you not particularly enjoy about MdN? |
I hate the new (?) format. Has kept me more or less off the board since it came.
I also hate it when people take things too seriously, like getting upset when people are corrected for mixing up soundtrack and cast recording. Come on, that level of snottyness is just fun.

I like:
learning more about shows and other's opinions of them
the fact that the mods aren't nitpicky (my former board had mods that would take points away if you had off topic posts or bad capitalization.)
I don't like the weird formatting. But I'm getting used to it.

No one should watch The Notebook.
Nicholas Sparks should be banished from this Earth.
That's all.

I haven't seen The Notebook, but I'd watch just because TWO Canadians are starring in it....and talking about Sparks, against what probably is my better judgement, I found myself liking A Walk To Remember (the film, haven't touched his books)...but if you want a real tear-jerker, watch City of Angels. Goddamn Meg Ryan and her inability to concentrate on the road...Hey, does anyone know if the original German film it's based is any good? I heard it was, and am debating renting it sometime.

Musicals.Net is actually my favorite musical theatre-related forum.
My reviews of the others
ALW Really Useful Forums-The moderators are way too strict. If you say anything that is even in partial criticism of anything ALW-related, you could be banned. It is run very strictly.
BroadwayWorld-There are way too many bullies. You know, people who say that even someone who likes "Wicked" or "Rent" is a fangirl.
MusicalFans-I used to like this one, but the people are not very well-informed, and there is only a new post like once a week. Also, now they are under extreme renovation and I don't think it's been available this year. However, I did like it that they had a Musical Forum Request, where you could post a show, and if it got 20 votes on a poll, it gets a forum. Another thing that I liked about them is that they had Member of the Week and Member of the Month awards and the prize was a $10 gift certificate for iTunes or Amazon. I won twice, on The Drowsy Chaperone and Wicked.
AussieTheatre-It's fun, but I don't post there much, because they act like I'm an idiot, because I barely know any Aussie musical theatre stars. I rarely post there.
WickedDasMusical-It's in German, which I speak, but the people are VERY fangirl-ish. Some people have seen it over 100 times.
StephenSchwartz-Very interesting, and they have a Ask Stephen forum, where you can ask Stephen questions and 9/10 of the time, he replies. However, he can't answer questions like "Who is your favorite Elphaba/Glinda?", "What is your favorite show that you wrote?", "When is Wicked closing/opening in ...?", or "What is your religion?". Also, he takes a lot of AFK (Away From Keyboard) breaks.
I like Musicals.Net, because most people here know theatre, but don't bash the people who like "Wicked" or "Rent". We allow freedom of speech. However, it would be cool if we had Musical Forum Request and Member of the Week/Month with prizes.

I don't have much in the way of negatives to say about M.Net.
What I really like is some of the amazing people I have had the chance to chat with here. It's not often that I come across smart, intelligent people who can carry on a good conversation about theatre in real life, so it's great to have that here. Also, people are pretty much accepting of everyone else, and for the most part, it's a good environment, IMO.
What's bad? The occasional vulgar photos that get posted by the odd spambot. But that's not MdN's fault or anything...it just hasn't occurred on other forums I've been to. I just get concerned that a child is looking at the website and sees that kind of thing. Also, the "new" format really bugs me, because when the page first loads for me, it's normal, and then it goes all huge and annoying.
