Tenalto

Anything Sondheim. You seem to be seriously lacking in that department.
kakoforever

I think you'd like [title of show]. Go look it up on Amazon.

And I agree with above, you should try some Sondheim. Start with Into the Woods and Sweeney Todd. Then maybe A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and Sunday in the Park with George.

Also, you'd probably enjoy Jason Robert Brown's stuff. Start with The Last Five Years.
Salome

Jason Robert Brown's masterpice is Parade.

get sondheims' "Follies" ,"Company" and "Sweeeny Todd" first.

you also need

My Fair Lady
Camelot
Showboat
Grey Gardens
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
Me and my Girl
Grand Hotel
Chess (broadway or concert..avoid the london concept)
South Pacific
Rocky Horror Show (revival)
Lil Abner
Ave Q

Cole Porter:
Can Can
Anytihng Goes
Kiss Me Kate
out of this World

also some great lesser known shows:

Robert and Elizabeth
Darling of the Day
Rex
Baker Street
Mungojerrie_rt

Out of Salome's list I've seen two of them, and olny liked one (RHS). I want to see some of them though.
Salome

you only saw 2 of some of the most popular and well written shows? where do you live under a rock?
AllThatJazzHands

One word: RAGTIME.

I mostly haven't seen them because I don't really like pre 60s musicals.
mezzo_soprano

EVITA (the version with patti Lupone), Sweeney Todd, Phantom of the opera (I prefer Webbers but some prefer other versions.),
Into the woods(i'd get the DVD if you want to understand the story)
lizavert

Let's see...

My Fair Lady
The King and I
Man of La Mancha
Sweeney Todd
and if you get in the show, get Oliver! My personal favorite recording of that one is the London revival cast with Jonathan Pryce.
The Next Ten Minutes

Sondheim.
Orestes Fasting

Some of my favorites are Ragtime, Cabaret, Sweeney Todd, Secret Garden, My Fair Lady, Into the Woods, Light in the Piazza, Les Mis (my pet obsession), Camelot, West Side Story, and Phantom (both the ALW version and the lesser-known one by Maury Yeston). However, my tastes veer towards the dramatic, your mileage may vary, etc.

Other shows to check out, based on the shows you listed: The Last 5 Years, Parade, Drowsy Chaperone, Company, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Little Shop of Horrors, the Producers maybe.

Definitely look further into My Fair Lady (one of the most amazing and classic shows in MT history), Carousel (classic), Guys & Dolls (ditto, and it's a fun show), Little Shop (campy and awesome), and Secret Garden (beautiful). PotO is lovely brain candy, but get some other shows under your belt first.

That sounds extremely ignorant...

Thats because it is ignorant. Did you hear what he said about Brick and Gooper?
Mungojerrie_rt

It's not ignorant. I just don't like the musical style. There are of course exceptions to everything. It might be R&H's fault. Sound of Music and King and I both put me to sleep. The music that I've heard from Oklahoma was just nausiating.

I will vouch for the campy awesomeness of Little Shop.
Yip1982

Though I've heard some of the ALW shows I'd like to recommend CATS to you. I know it may lack a deep plot but it's a bewitching musical that can hook itself on you. I feel as if this musical has powerful themes of regret, togetherness, respect and redemption.
I might also want to venrure my recommendation for the R&H shows. I will second everyone's recommendations for South Pacific and The King and I, but I might like to venture my personal recommendation for Sound of Music, the last show that R&H wrote. I know it's not the best musical in the world, but there's this heart that makes this show so appealing.
Just for the record, might I lend you my list of cast recordings I would like to recommend, especially those from musicals you haven't got:
Carousel (film soundtrack and 1994 Broadway revival)
South Pacific (National Theatre revival cast)
King and I (Film soundtrack and 1996 Broadway revival)
Sound of Music (Film soundtrack and 1998 Broadway revival)
Cats (Broadway cast 2-CD set)
I know I shouldn't put Phantom in, but you might be interested in listening to the venerable West End cast album with Brightman and Crawford.
And, of course, the My Fair Lady Broadway cast album with Andrews and Harrison

No, get London or Australia, not Broadway. Or just get the DVD.

anotherm oment of ignorance.

Oklahoma is the reason musical theatre is what it is.

Little Shop of Horrors is from the early 1980s not the 60s. Rolling Eyes

as for the style..there were as many styles of musical theatre writing pre 1970 as there are now.
Cole Porter sounds nothing like Kander and Ebb, Kander and Ebb sound nothing like Irving Berlin Berlin sounds nothingl ike Rodgers and Hart,..Rodgers and Hart dont even sound like Rodger and Hammerstien..Rodgers changed his style to fit his partners.
Mungojerrie_rt

I know that Little Shop is 80s. I did say I like it. Rolling Eyes

Kander and Ebb's two biggest shows are 60s and 70s. The time I said I liked.
Salome

You know i'm really not sure if you believe everyhing you say or you are pulling a huge joke on us .
Mungojerrie_rt

To which of my statements are you refering?
Salome

Almost everything youv'e said on the boards.
Mungojerrie_rt

I assumed you were being specific to my latest post. Or is your mind wandering?
Salome

The thing that tipped me off to the fact that you might be bullshitting us is that you actually posted a whole paragraph claiming Cats is a deep show with 3 dimenional characters and plot subtlties.

even major fans of the show know thats not true.

even Webber, when the great Hal Prince asked "am I missing soemthing? are cats an allegory for teh state of england or something?" Webber answered.."no..its just about cats".
Mungojerrie_rt

Well, that was part truth, part sarcasm. It is the kind of show that can be taken either way. It was more Nunn and Lynn's work to characterise through a show that has no conversations between characters. Quite a task really, that they achieved better than most could.

I'm not familiar with Follies or Company, but I know Sweeney's a definite must have (get the OBCR).
Mungojerrie_rt

I prefered Into The Woods over Sweeney Todd. It might be because I saw the movie if Sweeney and ITW live.

The DVD for Company is now out. I think it has one of the best written books ever.
Salome

Yes the DVD is out. John Doyle's production isnt the best intro to the show though.
mezzo_soprano

I really liked it and it was my intro to Company.
