Musical-Opera with a similar storyOK, I am currently writing a musical but it requires a play within a play and in this case an opera within a musical, so I am looking for any opera with a story similar to this:
Main male (male A) character loves a female character and she loves him, but another male (male B) character also loves or lusts for her and in the end male B stabs male A.
Anyone know an opera like this?

Pagliacci
I recently wrote a cantata along the same lines. It also sounds like a part of Lulu. Look em up. Cool stories.

Yeah, and he isnt killed, and this show is nothing like phantom, it just happens to take place in an opera, there are plenty of operas like that too such as The Clowns, or the show M. Butterfly, dont think Andrew Lloyd Webber came up with something new, not to mention that Phantom of the Opera is really an old old old movie.

Ever seen this movie called Maytime? It has two huge stars from the 30s/40s: Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy. They are both opera stars in the film. It's really good. Try to find it. I think it's from 1939. I know it's not an opera, but there are songs that they do sing to each other in it.
Storyline is really close, too: Male A and Female love each other but she marries Male B and in the end Male A shoots Male B. Not exact, but that's all I can think of. Hope that helps.

Wait. The Clowns? Are you talking about Pagliacci?
Also Phantom of the Opera is an even older book. Now Phantom of the Paradise is an underrated movie, Phantom of the Mall is a crap movie, and Kiss meets the Phantom of the Park is a deliciously crappy movie.

Not to get too wild with the thread necromancy here... but are firing squads instead of stabbing acceptable?
Because if so, you could use Tosca.

Thanks to Salome:
M. Butterfly is a Play.
Madama Butterfly is the Opera.
