Mrs. LuceWhen the LSoH revival opened, a new character, Mrs. Luce, was introduced for "The Meek Shall Inherit". Seeing as this character did not exist when the show originally opened in 1982, I was just wondering why it was introduced for the revival.

...Mrs. Luce has always been in the show, I believe.
Whoever plays Orin usually plays her in drag.
My friend was Mrs. Luce like 5 years ago, and that was before the revival, so they obviously didn't have an updated script.
Granted, you don't hear her part on the Original Recording.
I just checked the script, also. With that being said, Mrs. Luce has always been in the show.

yes, there was always a Mrs. Luce. it's in the original script. orin plays a variety of characters that includes all the people coming at seymour with money in "the meek shall inherit".
one reason Im dying to play orin one day, so that if the director does it according to script, i can play 7 (i think it is) characters in one show.

A little side note: I saw a production where one of the stores on Skid Row was a costume shop. It was HILARIOUS to watch Orin go in and out of it as "different" people.

Mrs. Luce is Claire Booth Luce..the playwright ("The Women") and wife of the owner of Life magazine.

Mrs. Luce isn't in the original cd which is not an accurate representation of the show whatsoever. so that might explain the confusion.

Are you speaking of the 1982 Off-Broadway Cast Recording? If you are, then I must tell you that in my opinion, that recording is the definitive LSoH. Both the movie and the revival do the show no justice at all.

but it's very incomplete and features songs that have since been revised.

its missing a verse of Mushnick and Son..plus they changed a bit of that song for the recording. it is missing parts of Meek Shall Inherit. and its missing a whole song (Call Back in the Morning).
the new recording is the best by far.

That's one of the strengths of the '82 recording. "Call Back" is the worst song in the show; it was better left out.
