Mrs. Lovette

If "Sweeney Todd" were revived on Broadway in the next year or so, who do you think would be the best Mrs. Lovette? Feel free to say why.
Ghost

Len Cariou.

But I voted for Burnett.

FOR THE LOVE OF SONDHEIM, SPELL IT RIGHT!! LOVETT! NO "E" AT THE END!

Bernadette all the way. I wrote her a letter asking her to take the part if she ever got the chance, but never sent it.
HappyMonkey

Baranki doesn't have that voice and is more concentrated on the big screen. Mullally is too young. I voted for Bernadette.

Christine Beranski just played her at the Lincoln Center with Brian Stokes Mitchell, and beleive me, she has the vocal chops to do it!
Megan the Phantom Girlie

Carol Burnett all the way! I watch her show on TV Land all the time!
Salome

no one but Baranski should play the role. She is the finest Mrs. Lovett since Angie.

bernadette isnt the right type for the role.

I would love to see burnett do it but she is a bit old for the role now..and Megan still has a decade in which to play the role.

Aww Carol! Very Happy
belleboi80

wow so it has been a long time since this was posted and ofocurse we now knwo teh frightening ms laopen is playing her, but if I had a choice I would say christine Baranski. now Carol burnette is one of my all time favs, but for some reason, i just cannot see her doing this. I think bernadette is amazing as wlel, but just do not see it. ms mullaly woudl be great when she gets out of will and grace mode (don't get me wrong I love her). i jst think angela lasbury has such a staple on the role, more so then len or george. i think tehy are amazing, do not get me wrong, but there is some room. Angela just had it dead on and no one wil lmatch her.

I can't really imagine ANY of them playing the part. Of course, I had a hard time imagining Patti LuPone in it so...

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE for the love of all that is good and true and beautiful in the world, if you're going to discuss Sweeney Todd intelligently-- SPELL THE NAMES RIGHT!!!!!! Mrs. LoveTT.

I think Megan Mullaly would be fantastic, but she has a while.
The_Wicked

Okay Question! So Brian Stokes-Mitchell played Sweeney? I think that is awesome! I hear he has an amazing voice. But what about the whole "his skin was pale, and his eye was odd" it was pale... for a black guy? Mayhaps? Just how they did it interests me.
BenjaminB

Peters would be the best choice.

Choices...

Of the four, I'd be most eager to see Christine Baranski play the role. I would have loved to see her at the Lincoln Centre with Brian Stokes Mitchell.

I'm one who'd really like to experience Peters as Lovett. Her range nay be limited, but I mentally image her being creepily cute the way Lansbury was creepily cute.

Even though I don't passionately hate Peters as Rose, I can see why she was not ideal in the role. Could she pull off Lovett better? Does anyone have any opinion which role is harder to play, Lovett or Rose?

She never played her at Lincoln Center. It was the Kennedy Center and she was great!
RainbowJude

At least they're both presidents...

That's what I meant! You know I have no sense of American geography!

I had to post this somewhere, and this topic seems appropiate. It's a little random, but I find it hilarious...in a sense...but my math substitute teacher is named "Nellie Lovess" And I asked if she ever heard of Sweeney Todd, and she said no. I've been tempted to call her Mrs Lovett...but one, her name is Lovess and she's 'Miss'

She's turning 49 this November...and I think Lansbury played the role when she was 48 or something.
What Is This Feeling?

WTF? Revival, that's not gonna happen for atleast 15 or 20 years. Bernadette is a definate no, cannot see her in it. Carol yes, and not so much Megan either I see her more as the Witch in ITW.
