Moving: How Much is Too Much?I'm singing "Honey Bun" for a revue audition, and I'm still trying to figure out how much movement would be acceptable. I know that I shouldn't have a whole choreographed routine, but how much can I move, and in what way, before I become a cheeseball?

Some movement is great... but I would be sure to plan it all out and rehearse it before your auditions. The one thing that tends to happen in auditions ( I do community theatre) is that people think they should be doing something as far as movement, but haven't rehearsed it, get nervous and spend the enitre song moving aimlessly about.
Concentrate on appropriate gestures and worry less about moving around the stage.
Try singing the song in front of a mirror and doing whatever movement feels natural. Remember (or write down what you liked). Try this several times untill you work out what you want to do. You don't need a gesture/movement for every word or line... it should look natural.
Rehearse your movement every time you rehearse the song so that you are used to performing both song and movement together.
Best wishes for a successful audition!

Thank you! That goes along with what I was doing before, so now I know I'm on the right track. Huzzah!

Love this as an audition song because it allows you to act. Your personality can really come out. BTW - my daughter has used this song twice and both times got roles.

I move my hands some and I don't really move around (as in walk) a lot. Once, my friend and I happened to be at the same audition and she was moving too much, so the director stopped her and asked her to do it again without doing anything.

Here's advice I was given and I give it to others: Just stand there and sing the damn song.
If you find that there is no emotional depth or musical variety in the song and that moving is the only way to do anything with it, than choose a new song.

In my experience.....I have sat in on auditions, been musical director, or directed in our community theatre for the past 15 years... I like to see some hand gestures and minimal movement. It allows you to see that the actor can act while singing, and has put some prep time into their audition.
Not that I wouldn't cast someone who simply stands and sings. It makes a better impression (at least on me) if you can do appropriate movement while singing.

Agreed. Movement should be inspired by emotions, beat changes, etc. It shouldn't be choreography.

Guess I didn't express myself well... yes, the movement should be inspired by the emtion in the song, etc., not just random gestures made up because you don't know what else to do.
