Movie ChangesWho likes the changes from Movie to Stage in TSOM? I for one like Lonely Goatherd in the Bedroom Scene It is Very Peppy is alot more fun to sing/play(pianist/singer point of view) and I also like Ordinar Couple better
I never really liked Something Good I dont know why...
Who likes/dislikes all of these changes
Personally I have only seen one production that did not deviate by putting My Favorite Things in the bedroom Scene or Something Good where Ordinary Couple goes and I enjoyed that production alot (although i only got to see a tape of it as with my schools) I have to say I ussually prefer the original to the changed versions I have no clue why...
What are your sentiments?

In my production, Confidence was added and it was a show-stopper. We made it a chorus number (dancing not singing). We also changed "Ordinary" to "Something Good" so I don't know what that sounds like.
I also like that The Lonely Goatherd is in the bedroom, but I think it's really weird having "My Favorite Things" between Maria and The Mother Abbess. It makes no sense to me.
I also like the two songs that the Baroness, Max and the Captain sing. They are soooo good! I wish they were in the movie!

I hate the changes to the movie. I agree that "Lonely Goatherd" belongs in the bedroom I mean, not like that, but you know what I mean... yeah. And, yes, it doesn't make sense that Mother Abbess sings "My Favorite Things", but I find a certain sort of humor in it. Sort of a comical "Climb Ev'ry Mountain".

I think its to show her softer side. As I believe in that scene she tells Maria she too enjoys singing and that was a song from her childhood...this may not be correct..its been a few years since I've performed in/seen the stage version and I don't remember all the details. Also they are singing this ridiculous song full out in the Abbey...something which is not allowed! It kind of humanizes Mother Abbess and makes her more then just the mother superior. The same with Climb Ev'ry Mountain which I actually think is a good contrast to My Favourite Things because we now see her very serious side.

I agree that it's weird that she sings MFT because part of the reason Maria is in the meeting with her is for singing the song. But I do think Climb Ev'ry Mountain is appropriate because it's more serious and it's teaching Maria a lesson.
In the play, My Favorite Things is really just a filler.

I agree I also think that it shows a connection between the two in that hey both shared the same past, in a sense, and that the Mother Abbess knows how Maria feels and most likely had the same feelings when she first came to the abbey she chose to stay.

The only movie change that I like better than the show is the switching of An Ordinary Couple with Something Good. Couple is just awful in my opinion. I also love I Have Confidence, but it I can't imagine it working well on stage.

We all detested an Ordinary Couple in my production. That song seemed to go on forever lol,

There are many hints throughout the scene between Maria and Mother Abbess that show that perhaps Mother Abbess was quite like Maria when she was younger. That's one of the reasons Maria sort of gets away with some of the things she does...(See also "How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria") or the fact that she lets Maria sing "Favorite Things" at all in her presence!
It is also a way for Mother Abbess to calm Maria before she delivers the news that she must leave the abbey.
It's a great place for the song, actually!
And the way it was staged in the second production I did was very touching!

Let's not forget the worst travesty of all in the stage-to-movie "translation" -- the cutting of the two cleverest songs in the score: "How Can Love Survive" and "No Way To Stop It".
It really ticks me off how many stage productions cut those wonderful pieces because "they aren't in the movie".
Grrrrr!

Apparently there is also a difference with Rolf at the end, when the Von Trapp family is holed up in the Abbey, hiding from the Gestapo or SS: In the movie, Rolf turns the family in, but in a stage production he does not. I've never seen a stage production; can anyone confirm or correct?

Yes, in the stage production he sees Leisl and the family and yells "There's no one up here, sir!" And then runs off. I like that better than him turning them in. I like it a lot better.

You are correct, Mark Walton! Hence, the scene where the nuns screw up the Nazi cars and say that they're sorry, but they have sinned! LOL!
Here are a few differences (some may have been mentioned, some not! and I know that I will come up with more as I go, so I apologize...) :
In the movie, Elsa tells Maria the Captain's in love with her...in the staged version, Brigitta does.
The movie Laendler sucks...dancing real Leandler moves is much more beautiful to watch and it's A LOT more difficult!
Lonely Goatherd...IMHO I believe it's better in the bedroom scene than the "puppet show" that's in there for no reason really...I've done it both ways...(I prefer Lonely Goatherd in the bedroom scene because it makes more sense and, if staged correctly, can really be a bright spot in the show that shows the growth of the relationship between Maria and the children.)
I've also done "Favorite Things" in the bedroom and a throw-away Goatherd scene and "Favorite Things" in the Abbey with Mother Abbess with Goatherd in the bedroom scene. I prefer the latter. (See discussion above)
Obviously, the key to SOM is different in the movie version than the stage version. I have sung both versions...I really like the higher key because it's very carefree, but I also love the lower key because it has a very honest tone to it.
I agree with everyone on the fact that cutting "No Way to Stop It" and "No Way to Stop It" is a travesty! The political climate at the time is what drives them to leave their home!
"Something Good" vs. "Ordinary Couple"...I like "Something Good" better because it's simpler and more honest. (A reprise of "Ordinary Couple" is usually played during the wedding scene, for those who like it, but don't LOVE it!)

I like it in the Bedroom better, because it is a more fun song to sing i think it makes more sense because it so completely random that it would take your mind off of it more than "Favorite Things" because as soon as you finish "Goatherd" you dont snap right back into reality, imho. I also think "Goatherd" is a more memorable song so you want to do it well because its so hummable...

I haven't heard An Ordinary Couple, but I can't imagine anything as good as Something Good... it's the spot in the film that gives me goosebumps.
Mainly because I still have a raging schoolgirl dorky crush on Christopher Plummer in the film... *hides*

There are so many stories about how he HATED SOM, but God, you couldn't get a better Captain Von Trapp! Such a brilliant actor!

Andrews isnt too crazy about SOM either.

^Heaven forbid it is the role most people know her by! She can complain all she wants, but the truth is, that's what most people associate her with and that's the show that still plays in syndication and made her an icon...

I think mary Poppins and Victor Victoria are just as known in the publics minds.
Poppins even moreso than SOM.

lol. but seriously why would she prefer being known for Maria in a show she considered "filled with sugar".. over vicxtor/victoria (the film not the play) or the wonderful mary poppins, for which she won her Oscar.

I never knew until a couple years back that that was her My cousin pointed it out because she said to me "I can do a really good impression of Julie Andrews from Mary Poppins" and I said "Thats not JULIE!!!" yea then that just made the movie better for me!!!
|

Well, I liked Julie Andrews better in Mary Poppins because it was a more interesting role.. so I'll associate that with her. But SOM still has its merits, even if it was filled with sugar..
Ha.. Gretl (spelling?) was filled with sugar - my Mum told me that Christopher Plummer refused to carry her in the mountain scenes at the end because she'd put on so much weight eating danishes and the like.

Julie Andrews will always be Mary Poppins to me. When I saw her in the Sound of Music, I was very confused. Not only was Mary Poppins in Germany without the Banks children, she had blond hair! I was a very confused six year old.

It was only "filled with sugar" cuz she made it that way. She could have taken it in a more realistic direction if the director/her own character choices let her...That is the problem with the movie...It misses a lot of the most important aspect of why they're leaving, to an extent. They should have kept the political songs in the show...The political climate at that time was so tumultous that they had to leave their home, their country! I don't feel that the stakes are high enough in the movie...

i have been elsa before and she actually gets alot more stage time in the play, she also has two songs! I just feel a need to tell that.
