Moulin Rouge?Do you think Moulin Rouge would be good if it was turn into a stage musical? I think it would be fantastic. Unless, it's already a stage musical. I'm not sure. The arrangements of the songs are great. |

There's a production in Europe somewhere, I believe.
I think it'd be good, but it might have to be downsized a little. Kinda like Sunset Boulevard should have been downsized. |

I think they should just leave it as a movie

I adore the movie, so I would love to see it as a stage show, though I'm not sure it'd necessarily live up to the movie version.

It may not be the movie, but I felt that there was kindof a "stage performance" throughout the movie, so I thought it would work.

No. It's a spectactle movie, and moving it to the stage would definetely hurt it- since even the most spectacular musicals have got nothing on Moulin Rouge.
It needs the infinite space of cinema to be successful. |

I have to agree with Kad. It's a huge spectacle, and just wouldn't fit properly on a stage. And since it wouldn't work, I think it will probably happen. |

Crap on screen equals crap on stage, if it goes in that order. Moulin Rouge was complete, total, utter crap.

I think part of what made Moulin Rouge so awesome (not according to mrsjamoie though), was that it reinvented teh movie musical and brought it back mainstream. Im sure it would be ok on stage and big and fun and all that, but you'd lose all the awesome camera shots and editing that made it that much better

It wasn't good as a film, it's not even going to get close to mediocre if it's moved to a different medium.

I third that. A lot of it would be pretty hard to adapt to the stage, any way. |

Moulin RougeI think that with today's technology, enough spectacle could be devised in the theatre to make Moulin Rougean electric experience - but it wouldn't be cheap. At any rate, I think the film has the potential to be a good stage property - but only if substantial work was done on the book. The loss of the frenetic editing and elaborate cinematography would reveal the shoddy storytelling that (I feel) is the central problem of the film. But do I think Moulin Rouge should be turned into a stage musical? Honestly, no. Later days David |

A stage musical version had already existed.
The musical played in Nuremburg, Germany from 12/18/2004 to 3/5/2005.

I think with a lot of adapting, Moulin Rouge! could potentially make a really good stage show. But a lot of changes would have to be made.

It would be dreadful on stage. alot of what made it work on screen was the color hues, the tinting in the film, the creative cinematography. Its a film experience not a stage experience.

I don't think I could bear to see anyone other than Nicole Kidman as Satine, it just wouldn't work.
Now, does that adaptation stay completely true to the story? I think it would be very very difficult to create a good stage version of this movie. The show within a show concept worked wonderfully on screen, and the choreography looked amazing because of the filming. I simply do not think this movie would be impressive at all on stage, and if they can't do it right they shouldn't do it at all. |

Not Nice in Nuremburg
Well, exactly. And the pictures from that production in Nuremburg that RainyCrystal posted on page 1 on this thread show exactly how not to do it. Was this a professional production? I've seen better sets and costumes in high school shows. Later days David |

I feel, now, after watching Mouline Rouge alot more, than in conclusion, it probably would not do very good as a stage show. In my opinion, what made the show so unique was the camera angles as well as changing camera views every three seconds. It brings the effect on what is happening. I do believe you could pull it off, but it would not be that successful, unless the script does alot of rewriting. The score is amazing though.

The filmed relied on being able to show you where you should be looking, theatre doesn't have that option (or you could always just use a single spotlight the entire show), the film showed so much of the world, the stage could never compete with that.
I think if it is a stage production, Baz Luhrman and his crew (at least) should be back to work on it. They know what to do, they were why the movie was such a success. |

i think moulin rouge would be absolutly fab on stage, but i think if you were gunna do it you'd have to go all the way. a big professional production in london or new york with lavish sets and the best singers and dancers in the biz. this show could really be a spectacle and i for one would pay alot of money to see it!
