Mother?I am a mix of black and white, I have curly black hair, and 5ft 4in I originally wanted to be Sarah, and still do. But would it be retarded if I was Mother? I know I can sing her songs but I think I am the wrong color. I am not really sure what do you guys think? Maybe with make up??? |

Okay sorry bad wording new question...
Would the show be thrown off by my playing Mother? |

I guess it depends on how dark your skin is or how well you can apply makeup. Mother is supposed to be the perfect example of rich, white society, so it would probably really come down to how you looked compared the guys playing Father, Younger Brother, etc. and compared to the Harlem ensemble.

Agreed. Similarly, Alexandria Wailes, who I believe is also part black, played Joanna Wilkes in the Deaf West revival of Big River -- a show where race obviously plays a HUGE part of the story. On stage the difference in facial features and skin tone between her and Melissa van der Schyff (who played Mary Jane) was not that evident, but off-stage it would've been.

Yeah, it does depend on how light you are (or can be). Brian Stokes Mitchell (who is sort of black) played Emile DeBeque in South Pacific.

But that's a concert. Like Stokes as Emile, I doubt Reba McIntyre would've ever played played Nellie in a fully-staged production. http://www.pbs.org/wnet/broadway/stars/mitchell_b.html Coming from a culturally diverse background -- African American, German, Scots, and Native American -- he lends himself naturally to a greater world of diversity on stage. |

Okay... I don't think I will even attempt because I am terrible at make-up and I don't think it will work! I think if I had to compare my skin tone it would kind of be that of Jordin Sparks from American Idol (just to give you an idea). and yeah... I know I can pull it off vocally but not the look and I don't want to ruin the play... I doubt they would even cast me. My directors are totally smart and aware and if I came into the audition with a Mother song they would probablly send me away and tell me to audition for Sarah of get a chorus audition song. But thank you so so so much for the input and advice.
