Miss Saigon 2006 UK tour - thoughts?

So I've just gotten my hands on a recording of the 2006 tour - I believe it's closed now, but I could be wrong - but wow, how disappointing! The Kim (I don't have her name, I apologize) over-emotes everything, and the Engineer is embarrassing.

The worst part, though, are the orchestrations - I've never heard a show with duller and flatter orchestrations - "If You Want to Die in Bed" and the "Finale" (two of my favorite pieces from the show) are especially weak.

I'm just really suprised at how much the show has changed - the few cut lines were also unfortunate, too. What has public reaction to this tour been? It just seems to have taken the show and taken a lot of its heart away, and that really is too bad - it's by far my favorite piece of musical theater, and I don't like the direction it's gone in.

I saw it in Manchester and loved it - it was the first time I saw the show, having only listened to the OCR.

I saw it in Liverpool and thought it was great, Kerry Ellis's Ellen was stunning

Saw it in Woking at The New Victoria Theatre.

I still like it but putting into consideration that it's more of a budget and smaller scale production to possibly accomodate touring, I expected less spectacle as compared to the Drury Lane version.

There's this wooden house that never seemed to leave the stage (just left visible on the sides althroughout)... there's no more of that "humping the cadillac" in American Dream (hell, there was no Cadillac)... and the helicopter is obviously a projected image and it could do with a bit more clarity and definition.

But the experience was still good. I enjoyed it still. It's just good to know that the new production allows Miss Saigon to be more mobile now than it was before.
