minimalist wicked works!

Sorry this topic has already sorta been done, but the last one was mainly about a certain minimalist script created (which was well written, by the way) and the idea of whether wicked would stand without the major special effects.
well, myself and a group of friends recently performed wicked (just for fun) without any complicated effects, of course, (and not using much of your minimalist script Monsieur D'Arque, sorry) and it turned out pretty well.
just recently our Elphie sent me this link to a blog of one of the ppl in the audience reviewing the show. I didn’t know this person, but when I read it, it almost made me cry.
tell me what you think.

Monsieur D'Arque

Glad to know it worked out for you!

Anyone else interested in trying it, I'll give you the script for Minimalist Wicked with a few minor revisions.
katethegreat

Wow - for somebody to go an write a review like that you really must've blown them away! Applause
Wish I could have seen it now!

How did you do the flying sequence?

Monsieur D'Arque

The flying sequence is unnecessary. It's just eye candy. Nice as it is, and as much as I like it, it doesn't do anything for the show. In the definitive minimalist script, Elphaba rides on a rolling platform across the stage, and if presented outside of a proscenium, through the audience. I don't know how this first minimalist staging presented it, but I'm curious, as their take was not nearly as bare-bones as the concept script.

I've been contacted by two other groups interested in Mini-Wicked. One is in my area, and so I'll actually be able to see my concept script in action! I may even audition for Boq et al.

what about paying rights??

Have you read the whole of the thread called "Defying Gravity"? Wink

Isn't that illegal?

I mean, I would definitely perform Wicked with my friends for fun if I remembered all the lines. But not for a reviewing audience. Maybe for my mom, if anyone.

Is that legal? To perform a musical you don't have the rights for if there is a minimal audience? Many ideas are coming in my head right now...

Jk, this is totally hypothetical.

Shhh Shhh!

Well, it may not be illegal if you don't charge the audience now that I think about it... but I'm not positive.
Monsieur D'Arque

Tickets to the production are free. Refreshments, etc, are not. Donations can be given by the enthusiastic, but it's to support the arts, not to buy admission.

As writer of the show, I made sure to establish those rules to keep it legal.
theatre_grl

the show was free and so were the snacks (actually the cast payed for most of it) and the audience was basically all family and friends.
we had a higher platform at the side of the stage and elphie just ran off and reappeared on top of that and made her emotion make up for the lack of lift--it was pretty cool.
Monsieur D'Arque

Cool! Sounds like fun. I'll keep everyone informed on word of the upcoming productions.

Did you use any of the lines from Broadway's book? Did you use any songs from Broadway's score? If you did, it's illegal. If not, you're good. Technically, though, using Fiyero, Elphaba, Morrible, etc. is all illegal since those characters are property of Gregory Maguire. (You can bend the rules with Boq and Glinda, as well as Elphaba and Nessarose provided they remain in their Wicked Witch format without those given names, since they're technically public domain from L. Frank Baum.)

no, we performed wicked with a completely different storyline and none of the major characters included Rolling Eyes
since when is it illegal to sing for your family?

...That was my point. That obviously, you didn't, making it illegal.

I don't think you ever said that you were only performing for your family (or families, if your friends' families were included).

i did say it. at the top of this page

"basically", meaning, some of them weren't my friends b/c i personally didnt know them but others from the cast did. There was no publicity and no one was invited/admitted that we did not know personally.

See, I missed that. An example of the imperfection of humanity. =P

In Multiples for Forensics competition, the same general idea is used. A majorly mini-musical.
And last year, it seemed like practically all the teams were doing a mini wicked.

Why not just kidnap the Bubble while you're at?
Maid Marian

Why are you people obsessed with wanting to levitate/fly? Has the story of Icarus taught you nothing?
katethegreat

LOL! Mr. Green

Seriously though, why?!?! You're starting to worry us...
Quique

I know very little about this show. I want to keep it that way until I see it. But one thing's for sure - the silly fandom is already starting to irritate me, lol.

Why are the special effects so important, is what I want to know? It seems that is the star of the show, based on what I've read. Why is it so necessary to see a damn witch levitate in mid air? And why does everyone think the notes in "Defying Gravity" are really HIGH!!! They're not. They're actually very easy to sing. Ugh. lol.

Yes. Fly during the night so there's no sun. And why use wax to hold the feather together when you can use CRAZY GLUE!

I don't think it's such the witch factor as that the fans themselves would like to levitate, which I find disturbing. Anyway, why wasn't The Witches of Eastwick afforded this kind of reverence when at the end of the first act not one but three witches take off on broomsticks?

Anyway, staying on topic ... Looks like finding a "minimalist" Wicked that works might be the only hope for that UK tour that some people on here have said they'd like to see. Perhaps you could lend the powers that be a few suggestions? Wink

To me, the star of the show is the music - there's more than enough people on here that will criticise it and tell me I'm wrong...but I love it. Ok, the lift effect is good to watch, but a strong Elphaba and combined with the power of Defying Gravity as a song when done well doesn't need the lift! I'd actually quite like to see without actually...

Because there was more to that show than the spectacle of a green smothered actress belting (or screaming) her way through her triumphant ballard as she (cheaply) flies?

Just a thought.
