Midnight!

Midnight at the block of Orange in Anaheim. I can't wait!
Xack

My friend is getting me and my (other) friend in for free tomorrow.
krisavalon

Yes, I have tickets for midnight as well! Only five hours to go. I'm seeing it about thirty miles from The Block, though, in Ontario. Should be a blast.
mozurkz

I have three tests tomorrow Sad. But I'm seeing it with 9 of my friends tomorrow, 7 of which are Sweeney virgins.
Sweeney Hyde

So my original party of 22 has dwindled down to 6 due to lack of time...we'll be seeing it at 4:10 tomorrow.

I was just reading over some reviews and realized that I am literally shaking with excitement.
theatre_grl

I was so worried that my mother would not allow me to go at all.
I just found out that I'm going tonight!!!! I'm so excited, I was practically jumping up and down and squealing Embarassed Very Happy

I have this cool shirt that I'm wearing that has a linnet bird in a cage on it Smile (I was planning on dressing up, but I ran out of time)

I get to leave to go to the theatre in seven minutes. Razz Very Happy Mr. Green

edit (7min later): I'm leaving now!!! Smile
Not Dead Yet

Just came back from midnight screening.

Cut songs/dialogue aside, the movie was just kickass. I mean, kickass.

Depp played Sweeney very well for the screen, not bursting with rage, but quietly simmering with it. Although, sometimes he sounded like he was singing a rock song and not a Sondheim piece. I still think he was great, though.

Lovett was like the perfect mixture of kooky and cunning. Her voice had no vibrato but that just made her creepier. Beggar woman... blah. Didn't get to see enough of her, she didn't stand out much as a performer, nor did Spall, Anthony, or Johanna. Johanna was meek, Anthony was just a romantic WITHOUT A SAILOR OUTFIT which really put me in a bad mood for a bit, lol. Toby was adorable... he wasn't given a whole LOT to work with, but his final facial expression before he offs Todd really convinced me that this kid is amazing. Pirelli: perfect. Genius. Judge Turpin: Eh. Alan Rickman is always amazing. I love his little Judge Turpin walk though. *strut strut strut*

There was a LOT of gore. Like, tons. But it really does work well for Burton since he really wanted it to be like one of those old classic horror movies with an insane amount of fake-looking blood.
krisavalon

Just got home. I had high expectations and even higher hopes, and both were exceeded. The cinematography was breathtaking, the acting was passionate and chilling by everyone involved, and although I was worried about Helena Bonham Carter, she managed to play the role of Mrs. Lovett in such an intense way that I found myself forgetting that she's not the strongest singer. In fact, the only singer with whom I was sorely disappointed was Timothy Spall as Beadle, but he only had one short singing part in this film anyway. There certainly was a lot of blood and gore, but it seemed so animated that it was hardly disturbing at all. I am most definitely a satisfied moviegoer.
Mistress

Yeah, I just read reviews from two of my local newspapers, The Toronto Star and The Globe and Mail. They both gave the movie 3-and-a-half stars out of 4, so things are looking good so far...The reviewer from The Star hinted that Sweeney could be the new Chicago Oscar-wise...

edit: I just remembered that the movie is rated 18A here in Ontario, so I'm lucky that my 18th birthday was in October Mr. Green

Have to wait until January for this! Evil or Very Mad Sad
Vice

I'm going and seeing it in seven hours with 2 friends/Sweeney Virgins and my Mum (Who has seen the Hearn/Lansbury DVD once.).
How was Rickman's voice?

*Waits for 5:30...*

Well I guess I'm the only one that hated it. The cinematography was good and that's about it. Depp sucked, Carter was ok I guess, every one else sucked. Johanna was the only one who could sing. I came close to walking out near the end. Sondheim writes every note for a reason, everyone involved in this movie clearly missed that. Depp was boring, Captain Scissor Sweeney Hands! They cut 3 of the probably the most character advancing lines out of which, combined with Depp's boring way of delivering other important lines ruined most of his character dynamic.
The end, flame away. I don't care that it wasn't like the OB production, I care that they took the depth out of the script and more importantly the MUSIC!
Jekkienumber24601

I liked the movie alot. I hated the first 20 mins (liked the opening credits though) when it got to "my firends" the movie started to pick up. The blood was amazingly good, even hilarious. By the sea was funny. Johanna trio is probably the greatest scene in cinematic history in my opinion. I give it a 9/10

It's not like they can keep everything. It would have been bad if they did because movies are different. Sondheim believes art is a living thing that is not set in stone--he either approved or made himself all of the changes that occured from stage to screen.
Which lines are you referring to?

Great quality. He said he struggled to hit some of the Judge's higher notes, but he sounded fine to me.
CaptainBoheme

I caught it right after lunch. I'm glad I ate BEFORE I went, because I won't be able to stomach anything for at least a few hours, lol.
Tenalto

I'm incredibly irritated that the closest cinemas showing it seem to be an hour and a half away. Grr. I'm going to be very lucky if I get to see it before it goes on video. Stupid Midwest.

So, I take it you have Marcus Cinemas there, huh??

Well, majority of our theaters here are that, but that is because they are based out of this city. Anyway, Marcus is a jerk on many different issues, but I won't talk about that here. He gave such a lame rason for not showing it, too!

Anyway, thank God there were 2 other theaters here that decided to show it.

I saw it at the first showing today at 10:40 in the morning! I have to be honest. I LOVED IT!!!! I was pleasantly surprised by Depp. I think this probably is his best performance (I am not a fan of his). Helena is OK in it, but her voice is just a little too weak for my taste. The guy playing Anthony was really my major issue with any of the actors. There was something odd about his looks to me. Rickman... Well, I love this man anyway!

In the end I really didn't actually mind that some of the music was cut. I would've preferred that it would've been left alone so that the story could've remained 3 hours rather than 2. The movie just ended SO FAST!!! That was disappointing.

I hated the fact that "The Ballad" was cut, but I do like that he did use the music during the credits at least.

You know, I didn't think it was as bloody as people made it out to be! That was actually a disappointment for me, in a way. The worst part was the bodies hitting the ground after they fell through the chute. That wasn't even that horrible.

I had this man and his 80year-old mother sitting by me. They were laughing and just having such a good time with it. I figured that if they enjoyed it, then it has to be good.

I have to say that I am surprisingly satisfied with it.
Sweeney Hyde

I adored it.

However, I do think that the stage show and the film are two completely different animals...and really shouldn't be compared all that much.

I can understand completely why they took out the ballads after seeing it...although I did miss them.
I think that cutting Ah, Miss was actually very wise...it made it all the more creepy for it to seem like they have had no real contact...especially when he comes up with the "I'll steal you" lyric. The same goes with Kiss Me...although I think I missed this more than anything else cut in the show.

The one thing that seemed really out of place, musically speaking was the lack of a chorus in God, That's Good! I also don't see why we had to have that after Sweeney's Johanna...it didn't make all that much sense to me...ooo wait...the biggest thing I missed was "Is that a chair fit for a king..." =(

The biggest qualm I have with Depp was how he reacted when he realized that Lucy was dead...just before the end...it...was too calm...

Carter...was a completely different sort of Lovett than anyone else has...just as LuPone was completely different from Lansbury.

Rickman...rocked hard...just as I knew he would. His death scene was just...brilliant.

Spall...was a fantastic Beatle. =)

The kid that played Toby = Adorable and extremly sympathetic. He had fantastic chemistry with Carter.

The kid that played Anthony...was alright...not great...not bad...

The girl that played Johanna...did quite well...

Fogg's death was...interesting...

So yeah...loved it...seeing it many more times...if you have a problem with this...i really could care less! Razz

I agree with all that you say about the film. Especially about the lack of the chorus. I must admit to missing him singing those same lyrics "Is that a chair fit for a king". I know that when I saw him building that chair it hit me that that wasn't going to be included in "God, That's Good". Ah, well. Can't have everything we want. Right?

I love the orchestrarions to this music!! I have to get the soundtrack. I purposely avoided it so that I could see it "fresh" (though I did watch a couple of things on TV).

Now that I have seen the film I completely agree with you when you say that you really can't compare the stage show to the film. They are the same but they are different.

I plan on seeing it again next week! Very Happy
Snow_White

I loved it and thought it was fabulous! Though I do have my quarrells...mostly with Carter. I thought, as usual, her acting was fabulous- but there were times I wanted to cry because she is not a singer and she made Mrs. Lovett seem so quiet and her voice was so soft...only my opinion but I thought it brought down the energy where as Mrs. Lovett's character should be lifting the energy...

Other than that I thought it was awesome and I can't wait to see it again!

Applause Applause Applause
I loved it.
-Whilst I disliked some of the song cuts, and got thoroughly confused when they switched out 'God That's Good' and Anthony's 'Johanna'.

-I loved Rickman's Judge Turpin, and Carter's Lovett. What she lacked in singing she made up for in acting, and I liked the more subdued character for Mrs. Lovett. It carried very well cinematically.
-Rickman and Depp should really sing together more in the future, I LOVED some of the chords that they hit.
-OMG. By The Sea. It reminded me of fangirl fantasies or something. I want a screen shot of Todd and Lovett in those victorian bathing gowns. Mr. Green (I choked on popcorn I was laughing so much.)
-They didn't do a cinematic freeze in 'Epiphany',but it carried well.
-The chemistry between Lovett and Toby was wonderful, you really got the feeling the two of the bonded.
-Why did the 'Fop' in 'A Little Priest' look kinda like a pimp or something?
-I miss the half-moon shaped pies.

I must say I had mixed feelings about the film. I tend to be overly critical about things that are near and dear to my heart being taken into new territory. After I have a night to mull it over I'll probably get over a lot of the issues I had with it. I suppose my biggest issue was the interpretation of Sweeney. While there were some great angry moments, that's basically all I saw from Johnny, as much as I love him as an actor. I'm not blaming him completely, it could have just been a direction choice. I felt he was angry and brooding throughout the entire film. In my opinion, Sweeney's emotional range is far greater than that and that's why the audience connects with him so much. There are a glimpses of humanity within him and this is why he is a sympathetic character. Sure he is somewhat crazed in the beginning, but his angry moments are fewer and great when they come, very climatic. His insanity begins to really show it's terrible head into the second act and then he does become totally consumed by the anger and revenge. I didn't see that build up as much here. I just felt he was nasty throughout the film and he yelled at Mrs. Lovett a lot. Even in the lighter, funnier songs when he attempted to show a smile, it was slight and he still had that angry furrow in his brow which never went away. Johnny did have a few nice moments though. Carter was good, although she didn't have the pizzazz that the character is known for. But it was a different interpretation that worked and I could feel the emotion from her character well.

My other big thing was cutting the Judge's Johanna. I just really like that song and think it develops that character a lot, I particularly would have LOVED to see Alan Rickman tackle it, he was a delight.

There were other things but those were my main complaints. For what it was, it was good. I suppose I just have to try to keep the amazing stage show seperate in my mind and appreciate this for the film that it is.
Jekkienumber24601

I think they devloped the character better than the stage show without Judge's Johanna. Just his porn collection, and his little peephole pretty much did the trick. I'm seeing it again today! Can't wait!

^and the fact that there was nude art all over the walls. that made me laugh.

What did you think a fop was?

I knew that a fop was a dandy of sorts, but it just... yeah. My friend asked "what is a fop? a pimp?" thing, and... it stuck.
Jekkienumber24601

Fops and dandys are seperate! Gosh! See or read Scarlet Pimpernel
musicalFREEK

I was really dissapointed with the movie because my interpretation of the plot line (for the musical) is that a person can be so consumed by grief and lust for revenge that they don't care what they have to do (killing the begger woman) and then realizing that what they were grieving for was right in front of them... dead (sorry i can't explain it well) and in the movie all i saw was a person slitting throats and a whole lot of blood.

I was also extreemely disapointed with every one's singing (except Anthony and Johanna)...

AND they cut some of "A Little Priest"!... which was almost a relief because it was so horrible BUT still the best song in the show...

I think I'll stop now
