The story says that it is Phyllida Lloyd's first film direction so that worries me. Film musicals work differently than stage. It also says that Streep is an accomplished singer so I hope she does the singing role justice. With Streep in the lead, bringing in other "name" talent should be easy. I guess the "theater snobs" will never forgive Streep for giving credence to Mamma Mia! being a real musical. |

Lloyd/Streep
That also worries me. Does anyone else remember the disaster that was the film version of The Producers (the musical)? I think what Lloyd will struggle most with is creating the right tone for the film. The show relies to an extent on the live nature of the performance and I wonder how she will translate that to the screen. I suspect the goal is somewhere in Four Weddings / Notting Hill / Love Actually territory. It'll be interesting to see what she does with the material, at any rate.
I think she probably will do a great job. You can hear her sing in Death Becomes Her - here's a clip that's on youtube - and she also sang in A Prairie Home Companion. Later days David |
