Merle Dandridge

How is she in this show. She plays Kala, the mom.
Etcy

She is FABULOUS! She evokes so much emotions and her voice is to die for...I have also seen her understudy twice who is also great!

Merle, from what I've seen and heard, is INCREDIBLE. PROBABLY the best female in the cast. (Even up against Jane) Her voice is AMAZING and she's so good at expressing her character's feelings..she's just what I picture Kala to be. Very much like the one we know and love from the movie. Smile

It's... my loss that you think it's amazing? Neutral

Anyways, I saw a boot of it, and it was just brutal. I made it through 3/4 of Act One and I just had to stop... yeeps.

1) Poor score - the original songs were quite good, but all of the new songs that were added just didn't do anything for me, with the exception of "For the First Time."

2) Bad singers - Listening to the OBCR, I can just tell that these performers aren't cut out for Broadway. When I first got the Cast Recording and I listened to the first track, I thought it was a woman singing... no, it was Josh Strickland. d'oh!

3) Really bad special effects - We've had this discussion before in the "Tarzan to Close in July" thread. Everything looks fake. Even if it was an "artistic decision" it was quite a bad one.

4) It just couldn't keep my attention. When I see a show, I expect to be entertained for the whole night... that is the purpose of live theatre, after all - to entertain the audience. There were so many times when I was watching the bootleg that I drifted off into my thoughts that had nothing to do with Tarzan... I was just plain bored.

And those are my top four reasons for not liking Tarzan.

No, I didn't see it live. I do admit that things are more exciting when they're live, but the bootleg had surprisingly fantastic quality, so I saw everything.

How was it boring? Quite simple, really. It just wasn't very exciting. For this show, Disney seemed to have relied on spectacle to make the show, and kind of skipped over the important parts of a show. It needed a whole lot of work, in my opinion. It would have been a decent workshop production, but, in the state that it was in, was not Broadway quality.

But, again, the part about the "AMAZING singers" is just your opinion. Everyone's entitled to one, but mine is different from your's.

Ok, you are 100% right. Golly gee whiz, Tarzan sure was super! *Corny Collins smile*

I made it clear that things are more exciting live in my post, and that I would have probably enjoyed it more if I was actually there. But I also made it clear that it was a great quality bootleg.
