Masks

Has anyone been involved in a production of Jekyll and Hyde where masks were used during the show? I'm currently the master of the masks in a production, and I was curious if masks were used commonly. We use pretty masks for the ensemble during Facade and pretty much every reprise of it. We have... well, deformed masks worn by the ensemble during Alive and Dangerous Game. All of the masks were hand-made by plaster (which means the break really easily!) and painted by the actors (which led to some interesting designs.)

Is the usage of masks a common practice in J&H productions? If it is, where are the masks used and how are they made?

I have never heard of that and it wasn't done when I saw it. I like that idea though...provided that they could still be heard while singing the songs...

Yeah... Obviously, that was a concern, but we eventually designed them so the masks stopped at the nose so the actors could breathe and sing. Plus, we have a very small and enclosed theatre, so acoustics usually aren't a problem.

I'll see if I can find any pictures... Some of them are really fabulous...

I've never heard of that being done before, either, but it sounds like a great idea! I would love to see that done.

Hopefully you can find some pictures. I'd love to see what they're like.

Same here. I saw the national tour (the one with Chuck Wagner), a terrible regional production, and an even more terrible college production, and none of them used masks.

I'm really surprised it's not a more common practice. One of the girls in the ensemble who played Lucy in a previous production mentioned how masks were used, although not as extensively, in the first production of J&H she was in.

I don't know if I can find pictures of the actors wearing the masks onstage but after the show is done, I'm taking as many pictures of my creations as I can.
