Mary Magdalene

Yes, this is another "I'm auditioning for JCS but I have a question"

I've never seen the movie, and I've only heard the music a few times, but it seems to me that aside from a the gospel girls Mary Magdalene is really the only female with more than a few lines of solo singing. Is this how it goes for acting as well, as far as spoken lines?

I'm really interested in that particular part, but I'm only 17 auditioning for a community theatre and I understand that the part may go to someone a little older and more familiar with the community department.

Does anyone have an suggestions to help me grab the part, show stoppers etc?

Lol. Smile

Re: Mary Magdalene

What does your poll have to do with your question? Are you going to make yourself up to look that particular ethnic background depending on which gets the most votes?
Stage Beauty

I was lucky enough to play the role of "Mary Magdalene" and im white, im actually spanish but with an irish, french mother i look white, now i have a bit more of a soulfull voice but non the less im white, what does your poll have to do with anything? An Actor makes the character by vocal and acting talents, it shouldnt have anything to do with Race.

Look...

Yvonne Elliman (OCR, OBC, 1973 film and several concerts) is Hawiian.
Claire Moore (1992 Concert version) is English.
Natalie (2002-2005 NA Tour) Toro is American and has big.... pipes.

Historically, Mary was from Magdalla which I believe was a town/village near Jerusalem. Maybe Nazereth.

It's not a question of race. How many Jews have sung the role of Jesus? We don't know and it doesn't matter. It's not important.

What you need to focus on is telling Mary's story through her songs and acting with the other performers. Read anything you can get your hands on about her.
Talk to priests, ministers, etc.
WATCH THE FILM(s)
Read the Bible.
Watch any Biblical epic you can.

Mary can be played a number of ways. The fans of JCS don't care about race. We care about performance.

Hey, you ain't lyin'! Wink Anyone who's seen Toro would know. Those pipes must also account for the junk in her trunk. Mmm-mmm-mmm, she fine.

Toro also didn't mimick Elliman at all when playing the role. That, to me, is the ultimate compliment. Sure, Elliman will always be an influence.

I'm not quite sure how to finish that, so I'll just stop.

Native American.
