Martha Audition Pieces?

Any suggestions?
Sweeney Hyde

As We Stumble Along from The Drowsy Chaperone
Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again from The Phantom of the Opera (I think this is what our Martha sang at her audition)
A New Life from Jekyll and Hyde
As If We Never Said Goodbye from Sunset Boulevard

I personally like all of Lucy's songs from Jekyll and Hyde.

I'm auditioning for The Secret Garden in about a month and I would love to have the part of Martha because it's community theater, and she is the only character that is around my age, 18. I was just wondering what specific song I should try and audition with. I was thinking Adelaide's lament because it is a funny song and somewhat similar to If I Had a Fine White Horse. But I don't know if it's too overdone. I'm a soprano, so I also feel very comfortable with something like Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again, Home from Beauty and the Beast, or I Don't Know How to Love Him, but again, I'm not sure if those are appropriate either because Martha is more of a belty mezzo. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Adelaide's lamet tends to be very overdone. When going for Martha, I'd probably stick to a more uptempo song than Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again, Home or I Don't Know How to Love Him because Martha is generally more cheerful and optmistic than those songs. (Note I said generally because she does have an amazing ballad in Act 2 when D. Craven threatens to send Mary away.)

I don't understand? That song is for a soprano. Martha is an Alto

WYWSHA would be better suited for a Lily Audition

I think of Marth more as either a mezzo or an alto belter. Her stuff is not THAT low. In addition if you have a good range an alto and diffinately a mezzo could hit WYWSHA pretty easily.

Yeah. With the exception of, I believe, the last few notes, it's actually a really low song. Everybody thinks it's high because it's Christine, but people forget what a rangey part that is.

It only goes up to F5 at the very end. Apart from that it stays pretty low. Especially compared to Christine's other material.

I played Martha last November and I sang "If I Had A Fine White Horse". I got the role because I embrassed the accent for the audition. Laughing
music is my life!!!

if you do something from the show, do if i had a fine white horse

For my Martha audition I plan on doing 'Wouldn't it be Loverly?' from My Fair Lady. Since it's a song for a soprano and I'm more of a mezzo, I'm taking it down two steps and even considering a third step.

I used "Stranger to the Rain" from Children of Eden, and I got the role. I also did a monolgue with a Yorkshire accent, which I think was a plus.

Have you not listened to "Hold On"??

I actually really like the idea of wouldn't it be lovely, although its out of the period that secret garden was in its prime by about 30 years.... Confused

I would probably avoid "Wouldn't It Be Loverly" because the lyrics have a built in Cockney accent. Martha does not have a Cockney accent, but a Yorkshire accent. Unless of course your director is not a very discerning person. Laughing
