Maria or Anita?

I love them both but I'm not sure who to audition for, I know I can sing both parts and look pretty puerto rican (very tan, dark hair and brown eyes) I really love Maria, her songs, her personality, and her character, but think it would be fun to be Anita as well because I dance, I just want to know which girl you think?

Re: Maria or Anita?

Are you more comfortable singing as a high soprano or are you more of a belter?

Do you feel capable of being very vulnerable on stage, comfortable hitting high C's, and generally ready for one of the most challenging parts in theater? Go for Maria.

If you like belting notes that are easier, acting sexual and humorous, but also being able to show off a more serious acting side, go for Anita.

Both are great challenging and rewarding parts.

The part of Anita has always been my favorite in this show. She has some great vocals that fits my vocal range way more than Maria and she dances.

Beautiful as Maria's songs are, I'd go for Anita - and I'm a high soprano! Anita just has a bit of...'Bite' to her. The character just wins out every time for me!

Anita is very interesting and fiesty and I adore her character. But if you're more shy and innocent and you can portray it well then I'd say go for Maria. Anita's vocal range can fit most any voice while Maria's goes a bit high for some people. Anita belts and just has a really fun time and Maria's voice is sweet and calming. If it was me, I'd rather play Anita.

Probably waaaaay too late, but I just gotta say - Anita all the way! I LOVED playing the part of Anita last year - it was the best role I've had upto now. As said before, the character offers a little more than pretty songs and a great opportunity to "steal the show" (love doing that Razz).

I'm really loving being Maria right now. I love how the whole show, she does lean towards being the typical, soft, ingenue, but then that final monologue, you're strong and can even be borderline scary. The way my director told me to be: "This whole show you've been led around by your brother and Anita and Chino. Tony was your only escape and now he's gone. You could potentially kill someone right now, you're crazy. They're all afraid of you."
