MAMMA MIA! is a fun, entertaining show. It deserves some credit for that. Audiences enjoy it very much, and it's easy to understand why. The music is catchy and familiar, the story is light and funny, the characters are very entertaining. It's a fun night out.

I wasn't sure how to answer so I decided to use my first impression of the show. The Monique Lund/Kristie Marsden/Ellen Harvey/Robin Baxter cast of the US Tour II about 4 years ago were awesome. They really infused the show with excitement. The replacement cast were ok but the show lost some of its energy.
In this new cast, Carrie Manolakos is Sophie, Laurie Wells is Donna, Sam is Sean Allan Krill, and Lisa Mandel and Laura Ware are Tanya and Rosie respectively.
I don't know how they did it but in my opinion, this new cast somehow manages to suck all the life out of the show. And I thought the character of Sam was already dull but Krill manages to take the character to the level of a potted plant. It makes me realize all those little touches in the blocking are so important.

I think this is a show that depends a great deal on the performers - good performances can make or break the show. I've seen the show twice. I loved it the first time but when I saw it again, the performances of new cast members (the Donna, in particular) and of cast members who had been with the show for the entire year (the Sophie, in particular) between my two visits to the show, did not match those that I had seen before. Any show depends on total commitment from the performers and when Mamma Mia gets phoned in - well, it ain't pretty....

It's absolute pants...crappy performers and badly written...
Did I mention too many pelvic thrusts.

I really liked it. It's not that it has an amazing script but I like the fact that it is a feel good musical.
