Mamma Mia the film!?

I am not sure if this is just rumours and hear'say but I read in the papaer today that thier are plans for Mamma Mia the film! Laughing
Fantine

I haven't the faintest idea on how this could work. I mean... How are they planning on doing that? I think it would take away the magic.

I don't see why not. It's a musical like any other that has been filmed. What I'm thinking is Chicago has been the only musical in recent times that has done well at the box office (I don't think Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was much in the way of a musical). They'd probably have to put in big name actors for the roles in order to do well financially. It might have to be something like Nicole Kidman as Donna, Ewan McGregor as Sam, Linsay Lohan as Sophie, Rosie O'Donnell as...well...Rosie, Lisa Kudrow (can she sing?) as Tanya , Hugh Jackman could be Bill or Harry.

Except, maybe, the Rosie part. She could be okay. But other than that, kill me now.

Hey...sorry. When talking film, it's Hollywood not Broadway. Razz

Very Happy

I'm sure I could work something out.

Tom Hanks is producing it...so its not going to be a small scale film...but he's a good producer...so...well...maybe...ah who am i kiding...musical theatre should stay as theatre.
nicky

I'm all for making films of great shows. I mean, not everyone can make it to Broadway to see some of the greats.

BUT does anyone else feel like they're just grabbing at straws here. If the market is flooded with musicals, people are going to get sick of it and stop going to see them. Then we'll be stuck in another one of those 10 year droughts where we don't even get one musical film.

Ugh...where did you here this? Because I searched Mamma Mia today on the Internet Movie Data Base, and nothing came up about a new movie, or even anything that had to do with the musical. And - from past experience - IMDb knows every movie out there, even movies that are coming in '08. What is your source?

Edit: I'm not trying to hunt you down. I just re-read my post and I sounded really mad -- not what I'm going for! Razz

Here is a source

Wasn't Hanks behind "My Big Fat Greek Wedding"? I think it was partly because his wife is Greek. Maybe he's interested because of the Greek connection in Mamma Mia! Funny though because their isn't much Greek about the show. I wonder if Hanks will try to sneak Nia Vardalos in? Razz

I'd rather they used former cast members of the show but they'll probably use the "Chicago" and "Moulin Rouge" rule and go for "name" actors. I just hope they use a director that knows how to do a musical.
TheNextTenMinutes

This has been a rumour for a while. Ugh.
As if it weren't bad enough onstage.
RuthieRocks

Olivia Newton-John for Donna!
Jim Colyer

With Mamma Mia!, you get 20 classic hit songs.

All for the low, low price of a ridiculously bad plot....

I don't think the plot is particulary bad. The stage version plot is thin but it's mostly supposed to be a light comedy and an excuse to string together a lot of ABBA songs. A movie might give the plot a little more depth. Exploring Sophie's feelings of never knowing her father. Donna having to face an unresolved past. Maybe add a little depth to the men and Rosie and Tanya but there isn't much time left to dwell on that. I just hope Hanks has the same luck as he had with My Big Fat Greek Wedding.
TheNextTenMinutes

Exactly, it's just a way of stringing together the ABBA songs. We Will Rock You at least had a good book with a cute storyline. Mamma Mia is a Sweet Valley High novel disguised by songs.
Pounce

I'd also like to add that with a movie, I hope they find a good way to squeeze in "Waterloo". It only appears in the show's encore but for a movie, I'd guess they'd throw it in the closing credits if they can't work it into the story. As a part of the show, it would be another showstopper along with "Does Your Mother Know".

I haven't seen WWRY, and I hope to someday. But from what I've heard of the show's premise and the idea of some "worthy" rocker pulling a guitar from a stone, it all sounds just so cliche.
TheNextTenMinutes

Perhaps...I have seen both shows and We Will Rock You is vastly superior in character development, book, and actually working the songs in. Sure, some parts of it are cliche, but no more so than Mamma Mia.

That doesn't say much because Mamma Mia! is not intended to be a serious study of human frailties. It's just good time escapist theater and has been enormously successful. If WWRY is mostly tongue-in-cheek the cliches might be fine but still...a guitar in stone pulled out by the one most worthy? Hmmmm....where have I heard that one before? Rolling Eyes

Mamma Mia! will be a huge hit as a film.

Ive seen the traveling show recently and the new Sophie Carrie Manolakos is amazing! She would be perfect for the movie part.
Perfect age and great voice!

Having also seen both shows, I have to respectfully disagree. We Will Rock You is a mess: it's a series of one-liners, some of which are quite funny, with hardly any character development. The only truly moving moment is the segue into "Only the Good Die Young". The rest is basically just nonsensical. The second act, in particular, is a mess and the last half-hour of the show disintegrates into nothing. Plus there is a central contradiction to the setup of the show in that, for someone who hates rock music, the Killer Queen sings quite a bit of it!

Mamma Mia, on the other hand, truly does establish and develop a set of characters - probably more successfully than any of the other jukebox musicals - and sets up the songs quite well - better so than most of those integrated into We Will Rock You, in my opinion.

Seconded. Mamma Mia! has a solid, if corny, plot. And the songs make sense with the situations as opposed to other jukebox musicals.

amen!

i live in middle-of-no-where texas.... im lucky to get anything close to here... and i dont have much money to travel (and all of that goes towards auditions) so turning musicals into movies is great for me... but i do agree its not the same, but i think mamma mia will be one of the easiest to make into a movie, its wicked that im worried about, can you imagine defying gravity in a movie, it would be horrible!

Movie Musicals

You mean the way the market is flooded with teen movies and teen-themed fantasy at the moment and no-one goes to watch them?

The decline in popularity of musical films from the late 1960s onwards had as much to do with political climate as it did with the quality of the films that were being produced. Now, in an age where anything goes when it comes to making art, musicals, even with their supposedly limited audience appeal on film, are carving out a niche. Yes, they still need to be made well and/or please audiences but, by and large, I don't think the trend will come to an yet just yet. If Phantom and The Producers didn't kill it, I don't think Mamma Mia will.
